Nitric oxide and tumour necrosis factor alpha in the process of pseudoexfoliation glaucoma

AIMTo establish the role of nitric oxide (NO), ascorbic acid and tumour necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) in the pathogenesis of pseudoexfoliation glaucoma (XFG).METHODsOur study included 120 patients who were referred for cataract surgery. All patients were divided into four groups according to clinical findings: XFG, early and late pseudoexfoliation syndrome (XFs), and cataract (without pseudoexfoliation). serum and aqueous humour levels of the ascorbic acid, NO and TNF-α were measured. The concentrations of the ascorbic acid and NO were measured by an appropriate spectrophotometric method. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELIsA) was used to determine TNF-α *** humour concentration of ascorbic acid was significantly lower in patients with late XFs (0.61±0.11 mmol/L) and XFG (0.48±0.15 mmol/L) compared to patients with early XFs (0.9±0.15 mmol/L) and cataract (1.16±0.22 mmol/L), while there was no difference in serum concentration in all examined groups. Aqueous humour concentration of NO was significantly higher in patients with XFG (77.7±11.4 µmol/L) compared to patients with early XFs (50.27±9.34 µmol/L) and cataract (49.77±7.1 µmol/L), while serum concentration was increased in the early stage of XFs (73.26±8.29 µmol/L). Aqueous humour level of proinflammatory cytokine TNF-α was increased in patients with XFs (early 460.04±18.32 pg/mL; late 502.42±53.23 pg/mL) and XFG (510.34±43.07 pg/mL), while there was no difference in serum level in all examined groups of *** ascorbic acid and elevated NO and inflammation related cytokine TNF-α level in aqueous humour of the patients with developed XFG suggest that oxidative stress induces local inflammation.

Detection of false data injection attacks using unscented Kalman filter

It has recently been shown that state estimation (sE), which is the most important real-time function in modern energy management systems(EMss), is vulnerable to false data injection attacks due to the undetectability of those attacks using standard bad data detection techniques,which are typically based on normalized measurement residuals. Therefore, it is of the utmost importance to develop novel and efficient methods that are capable of detecting such malicious attacks. In this paper, we propose using the unscented Kalman filter(UKF) in conjunction with a weighted least square(WLs) based sE algorithm in real-time, to detect discrepancies between sV estimates and, as a consequence, to identify false data attacks. After an attack is detected and an appropriate alarm is raised, an operator can take actions to prevent or minimize the potential consequences. The proposed algorithm was successfully tested on benchmark IEEE 14-bus and 300-bus test systems, making it suitable for implementation in commercial EMs software.

Human hand detection in uncontrolled environments is a challenging visual recognition task due to numerous variations of hand poses and background image *** achieve highly accurate results as well as provide real-time execution,we proposed a deep transfer learning approach over the state-of-the-art deep learning object *** method,denoted as YOLOHANDs,is built on top of the You Only Look Once(YOLO)deep learning architecture,which is modiﬁed to adapt to the single class hand detection *** model transfer is performed by modifying the higher convolutional layers including the last fully connected layer,while initializing lower non-modiﬁed layers with the generic pre-trained *** address robustness issues,we introduced a comprehensive augmentation procedure over the training image dataset,speciﬁcally adapted for the hand detection *** evaluation of the proposed method,which is performed on a challenging public dataset,has demonstrated highly accurate results,comparable to the state-of-the-art methods.

Galectin-3 and IL-33/sT2 axis roles and interplay in dietinduced steatohepatitis

Immune reactivity and chronic low-grade inflammation(metaflammation) play an important role in the pathogenesis of obesity-associated metabolic disorders, including type 2 diabetes and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease(NAFLD), a spectrum of diseases that include liver steatosis, nonalcoholic steatohepatitis(NAsH), fibrosis, and cirrhosis. Increased adiposity and insulin resistance contribute to the progression from hepatic steatosis to NAsH and fibrosis through the development of proinflammatory and profibrotic processes in the liver, including increased hepatic infiltration of innate and adaptive immune cells, altered balance of cytokines and chemokines, increased reactive oxygen species generation and hepatocellular death. Experimental models of dietary-induced NAFLD/NAsH in mice on different genetic backgrounds or knockout mice with different immune reactivity are used for elucidating the pathogenesis of NAsH and liver fibrosis. Galectin-3(Gal-3), a unique chimera-type β-galactoside-binding protein of the galectin family has a regulatory role in immunometabolism and fibrogenesis. Mice deficient in Gal-3 develop pronounced adiposity, hyperglycemia and hepatic steatosis, as well as attenuated liver inflammation and fibrosis when fed an obesogenic high-fat diet. Interleukin(IL)-33, a member of the IL-1 cytokine family, mediates its effects through the sT receptor, which is present on immune and nonimmune cells and participates in immunometabolic and fibrotic disorders. Recent evidence, including our own data, suggests a protective role for the IL-33/IL-33R(sT2) signaling pathway in obesity, adipose tissue inflammation and atherosclerosis, but a profibrotic role in NAsH development. The link between Gal-3 and soluble sT2 in myocardial fibrosis and heart failure progression has been demonstrated and we have recently shown that Gal-3 and the IL-33/sT2 pathway interact and both have a profibrotic role in diet-induced NAsH. In situ synthesis of potassium tungstophosphate supported on BEA zeolite and perspective application for pesticide removal

Potassium tungstophosphate is supported on BEA zeolite by in situ synthesis for glyphosate removal. spectroscopic measurements identified hydrogen bonding as a primal interaction of potassium salt and BEA zeolite. Composites are evaluated for glyphosate herbicide removal and adsorption process is analyzed using two isotherm models. Obtained adsorption capacities for all prepared composites lay between 45.2 and 92.2 mg of glyphosate per gram of investigated composite. suspension acidity revealed that glyphosate is adsorbed mainly in the zwitter-ion form at the composite surface while the amount of potassium salt in the composites is crucial for the adsorption application. Exceptional adsorption behavior is postulated to come from a high degree of homogeneity among surface active sites which is confirmed by different experimental methods. Temperature programmed desorption of glyphosate coupled with mass spectrometer detected one broad, high-temperature peak which represents overlapped desorption processes from active sights of similar *** of potassium tungstophosphate affects active sites present in BEA zeolite for glyphosate desorption and significantly increases the amount of adsorbed pesticide in comparison to BEA zeolite. supporting of potassium tungstophosphate on BEA zeolite via in situ synthesis procedure enables the formation of highly efficient adsorbents and revealed their perspective environmental application.

Extracting body surface dimensions from top-view images of pigs

Continuous live weight and carcass traits estimation are important for the pig production and breeding *** is widely known that top-view images of a pig’s body(excluding its head and neck)reveal surface dimension parameters,which are correlated with live weight and carcass ***,because a pig is not constrained when an image is captured,the body does not always have a straight *** creates a big challenge when extracting the body surface dimension parameters,and consequently the live weight and carcass traits estimation has a high level of *** primary goal of this study is to propose an algorithm to automatically extract pig body surface dimension parameters,with a better accuracy,from top-view pig ***,the backbone line of a pig was ***,lengths of line segments perpendicular to the backbone line were calculated,and then feature points on the pig’s contour line were extracted based on the lengths variation of the perpendicular line ***,the head and neck of the pig were removed from the pig’s contour by an ***,four length and one area parameters were *** proposed algorithm was implemented in Matlab®(R2012b)and applied to 126 depth images of *** the results of the manual labeling tool as the gold standard,the length and area parameters could be obtained by the proposed algorithm with an accuracy of 97.71%(sE=1.64%)and 97.06%(sE=1.82%),*** parameters can be used to improve pig live weight and carcass traits estimation accuracy in the future work.

Phytochemical characterisation, in vitro antioxidant and antidiabetic activity of Rosa arvensis Huds. extracts

In this study, the chemical composition, antioxidant, and hypoglycemic activity of Rosa arvensis Huds. leaves and fruits collected from Zlatibor, Željin, Veliki Krš mountains and Petnica village (serbia) were analysed. Phenolic and vitamin profiles, as well as in vitro antioxidant potential and enzyme inhibitory activity on α-amylase and α-glucosidase, were studied. Phytochemical analysis showed higher phenolic content in leaf extracts than in those obtained from fruits. Gallic, chlorogenic and syringic acids were the most abundant phenolic acids, while catechin was the major flavonoid compound. Furthermore, the highest level of α-tocopherol (1.94 mg/100 g fw) in achenes and ascorbic acid (9.60 mg/100 g fw) in hypanthium were quantified in the fruits sampled on the Veliki Krš Mt. High antioxidant capacity was observed for the leaf extracts. It was highly correlated with their chemical composition and primarily referred to the catechin content (r > 0.95, p site effect (r > −0.97, p s also showed good α-glucosidase and moderate α-amylase inhibitory potential in contrast to hypanthium and achenes extracts with lower antidiabetic activity. The high phenolic content and noted antioxidative potential were strongly correlated with the α-glucosidase inhibitory activity (r > 0.80, p se inhibition was only moderately correlated with those compounds (r > 0.49, p sted R. arvensis samples, those from Zlatibor Mt. contained the highest amount of target compounds and expressed the highest biological activity. The obtained results suggest that R. arvensis extracts present a new source of bioactive compounds that could be implemented as novel food ingredients.

Hepatocellular carcinoma: From clinical practice to evidence-based treatment protocols

Hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC) is one of the major malignant diseases in many healthcare systems. The growing number of new cases diagnosed each year is nearly equal to the number of deaths from this cancer. Worldwide, HCC is a leading cause of cancerrelated deaths, as it is the fifth most common cancer and the third most important cause of cancer related death in men. Among various risk factors the two are prevailing: viral hepatitis, namely chronic hepatitis C virus is a well-established risk factor contributing to the rising incidence of HCC. The epidemic of obesity and the metabolic syndrome, not only in the United states but also in Asia, tend to become the leading cause of the long-term rise in the HCC incidence. Today, the diagnosis of HCC is established within the national surveillance programs in developed countries while the diagnosis of symptomatic, advanced stage disease still remains the characteristic of underdeveloped countries. Although many different staging systems have been developed and evaluated the BarcelonaClinic Liver Cancer staging system has emerged as the most useful to guide HCC treatment. Treatment allocation should be decided by a multidisciplinary board involving hepatologists, pathologists, radiologists, liver surgeons and oncologists guided by personalized-based medicine. This approach is important not only to balance between different oncologic treatments strategies but also due to the complexity of the disease(chronic liver disease and the cancer) and due to the large number of potentially efficient therapies. Careful patient selection and a tailored treatment modality for every patient, either potentially curative(surgical treatment and tumor ablation) or palliative(transarterial therapy, radioembolization and medical treatment, i.e., sorafenib) is mandatory to achieve the best treatment outcome.
