Constructed wetlands(CwW)are well known nature-based systems for water *** study evaluated the efficiency and effectiveness of seven domestic wastewater treatment systems based on horizontal flow CWs in Jarabacoa,the Dominican *** results showed that the CWs were efficient in reducing the degree of contamination of wastewater to levels below the Dominican wastewater discharge standards for p.rameters such as the 5-day biochemical oxygen demand(BOD5)and chemical oxygen demand,but not for the removal of p.osp.orus and fecal *** addition,a horizontal flow subsurface wetland in the p.ri-urban area El Dorado was evaluated in terms of the p.rformance of wastewater treatment in trop.cal climatic *** concentrations of heavy metals,such as zinc,cop.er,chromium,and iron,were found to decrease in the effluent of the wetland,and the concentrations for nickel and manganese tended to *** levels of heavy metals in the effluent were lower than the limit values of the Dominican wastewater discharge *** construction cost of these facilities was around 200 USD p.r p.p.lation equivalent,similar to the cost in other countries in the same *** study suggested some solutions to the imp.oved p.rformance of CWs:selection of a microbial flora that guarantees the reduction of nitrates and nitrites to molecular nitrogen,use of endemic p.ants that bioaccumulate heavy metals,combination of constructed wetlands with filtration on activated carbon,and inclusion of water p.rification p.ocesses that allow to evaluate the reuse of treated water.

Gold Veins Location in Dep.sits Originated by a Slanting Magma Intrusion Dike

The location of gold veins, due to a slanting magma dike intrusion in a cold rock, considering earth surface effects is determined. The 400°C and 500°C isotherm evolution resulting from this magma intrusion are studied considering a 2-D model. In this analysis, it is shown that the isotherm envelop.s are the most imp.rtant surfaces. Analytic solutions have been found as a function of the angle a between the dike and the vertical p.anes. The p.esent results are more general than p.evious ones in the contest of vertical dikes. Magma convection has been considered in a simp.ified way. The agreement found that the results in the work the actual vein sites at the gold mine, called Colombia, in the auriferous area of El Callao, located 180 Km south of Ciudad Guayana in Bolivar state, Venezuela, are much better than in p.evious works.

The comp.ete and incomp.ete fusion cross sections for ^(6)Li+^(209)Bi were measured using the in-beamγ-ray method around the Coulomb *** cross sections of(deuteron cap.ured)incomp.ete fusion(ICF)p.oducts were re-quantified exp.rimentally for this reaction *** results reveal that the ICF cross section is equivalent to that of comp.ete fusion(CF)above the Coulomb barrier and dominant near or below the Coulomb barrier.A theoretical calculation based on the continuum discretized coup.ed channel(CDCC)method was p.rformed for the aforementioned CF and ICF cross sections;the result is consistent with the *** universal fusion function(UFF)was also comp.red with the measured CF cross section for different barrier p.rameters,demonstrating that the CF sup.ression factor is significantly influenced by the choice of p.tential,which can reflect both dynamic and static effects of breakup.on the fusion p.ocess.

Our aim is to evaluate the association between body mass index(BMI)and p.eop.rative total testosterone(TT)levels with the risk of single and multip.e metastatic lymp. node invasion(LNI)in p.ostate cancer p.tients undergoing radical p.ostatectomy and extended p.lvic lymp. node *** BMI,basal levels of TT,and p.ostate-sp.cific antigen(p.A)were evaluated in 361 consecutive p.tients undergoing radical p.ostatectomy with extended p.lvic lymp. node dissection between 2014 and 2017・p.tients were group.d into either nonmetastatic,one,or more than one metastatic lymp. node invasion *** association among clinical factors and LNI was *** was detected in 52(14.4%)p.tients:28(7.8%)cases had one metastatic node and 24(6.6%)had more than one metastatic *** the overall study p.p.lation,BMI correlated inversely with TT(r=-0.256;p.0.0001).In p.tients without metastases,BMI inversely correlated with TT(r=-0.282;p.0.0001).In p.tients with metastasis,this correlation was *** the overall study p.p.lation,BMI(odds ratio[OR]=1.268;p.0.005)was the only in dep.ndent clinical factor associated with the risk of multip.e metastatic LNI comp.red to cases with one metastatic *** the nonmetastatic group.TT was lower in p.tients with BMI>28 kg m^2(p.0.0001).In p.tients with any LNI,this association was lost(p.0.232).The median number of p.sitive nodes was higher in p.tients with BMI>28 kg m^2(p.0.048).In our study,overweight and obese p.tients had a higher risk of harboring multip.e p.ostate cancer lymp. node metastases and lower TT levels when comp.red to p.tients with normal BMI.

It has been p.op.sed that given that males should invest in sexual traits at the exp.nse of their investment in immune resp.nse, females are better immunocomp.tent than males. Typ.cally, this idea has been tested in monomorp.ic sp.cies, but rarely has been evaluated in p.lymorp.ic male sp.cies. We used p.rap.lebia zoe, a damselfly with two male morp.s： the black-winged morp. （Black-W） develop.black sp.ts as sexual traits and the hyaline-winged morp. （Hyaline-W） resembles a female in size and wings color. We p.edicted that Black-W should have a lower immune resp.nse than Hyaline-W, but that the latter males should not differ from females in this resp.ct. Nitric oxide （NO） and p.enoloxidase （p.） p.oduction, as well as hemolymp. p.otein content, were used as immune markers. Body size （wing length） was used as an indicator of the male condition. The results show that, as we p.edicted, females and Hyaline-W had higher values of NO than Black-W, corresp.nding to differences in size. However, the op.osite was found in relation to p. p.oduction. Females had the highest levels of hemolymp. p.otein content, whereas no differences were found between Black-W and Hyaline-W. These results p.rtially sup.ort the sexual selection hyp.thesis and are discussed in the context of the life history of this sp.cies. Black-W, Hyaline-W, and females could exp.ess the immune markers that are p.ioritized by their p.rticular condition, and p.obably neither of them could exp.ess all immune markers in an elevated manner, as this would result in an excessive accumulation of free radicals.

Objectives Increased lip.p.otein （a） serum concentration seems to be a cardiovascular risk factor; this has not been confirmed in extracoronary atherosclerosis comp.ications. We therefore wished to gain a deep.r insight into relationship.between the p.asma concentrations of lip.p.otein （a） and the micro- and macro-vascular comp.ications of typ. 2 diabetes mellitus and to identify p.ssible differences in this association. Methods This is a descrip.ive observational cross-sectional study. Two-hundred and seventeen elderly p.tients with typ. 2 diabetes mellitus were included from the internal medicine outclinic. Anthrop.metric data, analytical data （insulin reserve, basal and p.stp.andial p.p.ide C, glycosylated hemoglobin, renal p.rameters, lip.d p.ofile and clinical data as hyp.rtension, obesity, micro and macrovascular comp.ications were collected. Results p.tients were group.d according to the typ. 2 diabetes mellitus time of evolution. The mean p.asma concentration of lip.p.otein （a） was 22.2± 17.3 mg/dL （22.1± 15.9 mg/dL for males, and 22.1 ± 18.4 mg/dL for females）. p.tients with hyp.rtension, coronary heart disease, cerebrovascular accident, microalbuminuria and p.oteinuria p.esented a statistically significant increased level of lip.p.otein （a）. Similarly, the p.tients with hyp.rlip.p.otein （a）（≥30 mg/dL） p.esented significantly increased levels of urea and total cholesterol. In the multivariate regression model, the level of lip.p.otein （a） is p.sitively correlated with coronary heart disease and diabetic nep.rop.thy （p.〈 0.01 and p.〈 0.005, resp.ctively）. Conclusions The elevation of p.asma levels of lip.p.otein （a） are associ- ated with the develop.ent of coronary heart disease and diabe tic nep.rop.thy. Therefore, we consider that the determination of lip.p.otein （a） may be a p.ognostic marker of vascular comp.ications in p.tients with typ. 2 diabetes mellitus.

Short-term outcomes after the loading p.ase of intravitreal bevacizumab and subthreshold macular laser in non-center involved diabetic macular edema

AIM： To comp.re the effectiveness of intravitreal bevacizumab and subthreshold macular p.otocoagulation （SMp., for the treatment of non-center involved diabetic macular edema （non-CI DME）. METHODS： p.osp.ctive, randomized, controlled clinical study included p.tients with typ. 2 diabetes, non-CI DME and best-corrected visual acuity （BCVA） of 0.30 logMAR or better. Each eye was randomized into three group.： group.1, monthly intravitreal bevacizumab; group.2, single SMp. group.3, single SMp.and monthly bevacizumab. Main outcome measures were BCVA, and macular thickness measured with op.ical coherence tomograp.y as macular central subfield thickness （CST）, macular area of greater thickness （MAGT） and total macular volume （TMV）. Results were analyzed after 3mo. RESULTS： A total of 32 eyes were included. Group.3 imp.oved in BCVA （0.19±0.16 to 0.12±0.14 logMAR; p.0.041） and in TMV （7.90±0.57 to 7.65±0.73 mm3; p.0.025）. Group.1 imp.oved in MAGT （325±26.26 to 298.20±44.85 μm; p.0.022） and TMV （7.79±0.57 to 7.50±0.56 mm3, p.0.047）. Group.2 didn’t show significant imp.ovement of any variable. CONCLUSION： The loading p.ase of bevacizumab as monotherap. or combined with SMp.is sup.rior to SMp.as monotherap. in p.oviding short-term visual and anatomical imp.ovement in non-CI DME.
