Incorporating novelty and novel ecosystems into restoration planning and practice in the 21st century

Novelty pervades the *** some cases,potentially irreversible abiotic and/or biotic changes have led to the crossing of thresholds and thus the formation of“novel ecosystems.”Their widespread emergence(particularly on land)and the presence of continued environmental change challenge a traditional restoration goal of restoring an historical ***,we argue that restoration could broaden its frame of reference to consider how novel ecosystems might be used to maintain global biodiversity and provide ecosystem services and,in doing so,save potentially wasted efforts in attempting to fulfil traditional *** we explore this contention in more depth by addressing:Are novel ecosystems innovative planning or lowering the bar?We show that novel ecosystems were not innovative planning in their original *** the contrary,they were recognized as ecosystems that were recalcitrant to traditional restoration approaches,coupled with an awareness that they had arisen inadvertently through deliberate human activity,either on-or *** recalcitrance to traditional restoration suggests that alternative goals may exist for these ecosystems using sometimes innovative *** management may include biodiversity conservation or restoration for ecological *** elucidate the latter aspect with reference to an experiment in the wheatbelt of Western Australia—The Ridgefield Multiple Ecosystem Services Experiment—the design of which has been informed by ecological theory and the acceptance of novelty as an ecosystem *** novel ecosystems do provide opportunities to broaden restoration planning and practice,and ultimately maintain and conserve global biodiversity in this era of environmental change,they necessarily“lower the bar”in restoration if the bar is considered to be the historical ***,in these times of flux,such a bar is increasingly ***,careful and appropriate interventions are required

EFFECTS OF SEVERE HEMORRHAGE ON IN VIVO BRAIN AND SMALL INTESTINE MITOCHONDRIAL NADH AND MICROCIRCULATORY BLOOD FLOW

Severe body stress induced by hypoxemia and hypotension may lead to total body energy state *** perfusion of the most vital organs is maintained at the expense of“less vital”*** the present study,we used a multi-site multiparametric(MSMP)monitoring system for real-time evaluation of tissue blood flow(TBF)and mitochondrial NADH fluorescence of the brain and the small intestine following *** Group 1,uncontrolled hemorrhage,mean arterial pressure(MAP)was decreased to 40mmHg within 2 minutes and shed blood was re-infused after *** Group 2,controlled hemorrhage,during the 30minutes of hemorrhage,MAP was kept at *** hemorrhage,in both groups,the intestinal TBF and NADH deteriorated,while the brain remained relatively well *** Group 1,all parameters partly recovered within the hemorrhage phase,while in Group 2,complete recovery occurred only after *** the end of the experiment,both models showed a decrease in intestinal viability(TBF decreased,NADH increased),while the brain metabolic state in Group 2 declined *** unique multi-parametric monitoring device demonstrated that,under hemorrhage,the small intestine responded entirely differently from the *** may suggest the potential usefulness of the monitoring of less vital organs,as proxy organs,in critical conditions such as massive *** present study also highlights the importance of mitochondrial function monitoring in similar conditions in the clinical environment.

The Robogymnast is a highly complex,three-link system based on the triple-inverted pendulum and is modelled on the human example of a gymnast suspended by their hands from the high bar and executing larger and larger upswings to eventually rotate *** links of the Robogymnast correspond respectively to the arms,trunk,and lower limbs of the gymnast,and from its three joints,one is under passive operation,while the remaining two are *** passive top joint poses severe challenges in attaining the smooth movement control needed to operate the Robogymnast *** study assesses four types of controllers used for systems operation and identifies how far response stabilisation is achieved with *** system is simulated using MATLAB Simulink,with findings generated regarding rising and settling time,as well as *** research primarily seeks to exam-ine the application of a linear quadratic regulator controller,proportional-integral-derivative controller,fuzzy linear quadratic regulator controller and linear quadratic regulator-proportional-integral-derivative controller for this type of system and comparisons between the different controllers to demon-strate successful performance,which highlights the claimed advantages of the proposed system.

目的回顾性分析食管远端和胃腺癌患者新辅助治疗前后PET/CT显像在预报生存(生存时间和生存率)和组织病理学肿瘤反应上的价值。方法选取2002年1月至2011年12月间可手术切除的21例食管远端腺癌患者和14例胃腺癌患者,在新辅助治疗前后进行18F-FDG PET/CT显像,随后行手术治疗。测量最大标准摄取值(SUVmax)和代谢性肿瘤体积,并与肿瘤回归分级和生存情况做相关分析。结果与代谢反应相比,组织病理学肿瘤反应(PR)是一个更强的总生存和无病生存的预报因矛。SUVmax降低≥70%是PET显像唯一的PR预报因子(灵敏度82.4%,特异性61.5%,P=0.047)。无组织病理学肿瘤反应的患者死亡率[风险比(HR)=8.461,P=0.001]、复发率(HR=6.385,P=0.002)更高。与此类似,无代谢反应患者的死亡率(HR=2.956,P=0.063)和复发率(HR=3.614,P=0.028)也更高。SUVmax降低的程度可预测总生存和无病生存,但无统计学意义。结论PR与代谢反应相比是一个更强的总生存和无病生存的预报因子。SUVmax降低≥70%是食管和胃腺癌患者PET显像最佳的预报PR和生存情况的指标。标准化后的SUVmax降低的百分数无助于患者预后的预报。

Synthesis of Substituted Benzothiazepine Compounds with Medicinal Potential

A versatile synthetic approach toward a series of benzothiazepines with medicinal potential (for example, compound 1) that allows incorporation of structural variation at the three aromatic regions of the structure, and at the sulfur atom, was developed. Knoevenagel condensation of indan-1,3-diones with benzaldehydes, yielded 2-benzylidineindan-1,3-diones, which undewent thio-michael addition and intramolecular imine formation upon reaction with 2-aminothiophenols, to produce the target benzothiazepines. Use of indan-1,3-diones, benzaldehydes or 2-aminothiophenols bearing further substitution enabled production of novel 5,11-dihydro-12H-benzo[b]indeno [1,2-e][1,4]thiazepin-12-one analogs 1 - 14, including compounds bearing substitution at novel positions within the scaffold.

Synthesis and evaluation of carbon nanotubes composite adsorbent for CO2 capture： a comparative study of CO2 adsorption capacity of single-walled and multi-walled carbon nanotubes

As a preliminary investigation towards obtaining carbon nanotube composite adsorbent for CO2 capture, in this study CO2 adsorption performance of three commercial carbon nanotubes （CNTs） one single-walled carbon nanotubes （SWCNTs）, and two （2） different multi-walled carbon nanotubes （referred to as A-MWCNTs and B-MWCNTs） were evaluated and compared. The purpose of this study was to compare the different types of CNTs and select the best to serve as the solid anchor in the development of a hydrophobic composite adsorbent material for CO2 capture. The N2 physi- sorption of the CNTs was conducted to determine their surface area, pore volume and pore size. In addition, morphology and purity of the CNTs were checked with Transmission Electron Microscopy and Raman Spectroscopy, respectively. The CO2 adsorption capacity of the CNTs was evaluated using Thermo-gravimetric analysis （TGA） at 1.1 bar, at operating temperature ranged from 25 to 55 ~C and at different CO2 feed flow rates, in order to evaluate the effects of these variables on the CO2 adsorption capacity. The results of CO2 adsorption with the TGA show that CO2 adsorption capacity for both SWCNTs and MWCNTs was the highest at 25 ~C. Changing the CO2 flowrates had no significant effect on the adsorption capacity of MWCNTs, but decreasing the CO2 flow rate resulted in the enhancement of the CO2 adsorption capacity of SWCNTs. Overall, it was found that the SWCNTs displayed the highest CO2 adsorption capacity （29.97 gCO2/kg ad- sorbent） when compared to the MWCNTs （12.09 gCO2/kg adsorbent）, indicating a 150% increase in adsorption capacity over MWCNTs.

Trachypithecus,which currently contains 20 species divided into four groups,is the most speciose and geographically dispersed genus among Asian *** several morphological and molecular studies,however,its evolutionary history and phylogeography remain poorly ***’s langur(Trachypithecus phayrei) is one of the most widespread members of the genus,but details on its actual distribution and intraspecific taxonomy are limited and ***,to elucidate the evolutionary history of Trachypithecus and to clarify the intraspecific taxonomy and distribution of ***,we sequenced 41 mitochondrial genomes from georeferenced fecal samples and museum specimens,including two *** analyses revealed a robustly supported phylogeny of Trachypithecus,suggesting that the *** group branched first,followed by the *** group,and the *** and *** groups most *** four species groups diverged from each other 4.5-3.1 million years ago(Ma),while speciation events within these groups occurred much more recently(1.6-0.3 Ma).Within ***,we found three clades that diverged 1.0-0.9 Ma,indicating the existence of three rather than two *** the phylogenetic species concept and based on genetic,morphological,and ecological differences,we elevate the *** subspecies to species level,describe a new species from central Myanmar,and refine the distribution of the three ***,our study highlights the importance of museum specimens and provides new insights not only into the evolutionary history of *** but the entire Trachypithecus genus as well.
