Aquaculture-based fisheries enhancement involves the rearing and release of fish to achieve specific fisheries *** 1 million people fish for leisure in south-eastern Australian waters every year,and aquaculture-based fisheries enhancement is one of several government-led strategies aimed at improvement of fishing experience for *** release programs and an associated regulatory framework have been developed over the past decade,with the primary objective of enhancing recreational(leisure) fisheries for species spanning penaeid prawns,crabs,and *** has been a core component of these programs,which has both improved enhancement outcomes and greatly contributed to the broader management of target species and our appreciation of their ***,the study of recruitment patterns alongside development of aquaculture-based fisheries enhancement programs is an integral part of our *** contrast to larger-scale releases conducted elsewhere,release strategies principally involve small-scale releases targeted directly into niches primarily defined by recruitment limitation and habitat availability,which contributes to the economic feasibility of programs and achievement of measurable *** development and outcomes of established release programs are presented(with a focus on Mulloway Argyrosomus japonicus and Eastern King Prawn Penaeus plebejus),alongside the challenges that have hampered continued enhancement efforts under these programs(such as disease,genetics,contamination and broodstock management).We conclude by outlining programs currently under development and the approaches being *** includes the first integrated fisheries enhancement program in eastern Australia,where fish are being released in conjunction with artificial structures deployed specifically to enhance fishing opportunities.

A systematic literature review of over 500 documents on marine release programs published since 2000 was done to evaluate the current state of aquaculture based enhancement(ABE = restocking,stock enhancement and sea ranching) for commercial and recreational(= leisure) fisheries in North America,Europe,Oceania and southern *** have been made with reviews and government information on ABE in China and Japan,where large-scale continuous(> 300 billion released individuals from 2004 to 2015) have been practised for over three *** broad categories of release programs were identified:(1) Enhancement to increase commercial yield and value;(2) restocking to increase the spawning population of a commercial or recreational fishery;(3) restocking species for conservation;(4) Sea ranching – creating or maintaining a fishery by releasing individuals and harvesting them before they mature;and(5) releasing individuals to increase knowledge of the species and ABE system *** ***,crustaceans,molluscs and echinoderms were the focus of most publications in North America,Europe,Oceania and south *** on teleosts and crustaceans was most numerous in all regions(> 60%),except south Asia(～ 24%),where molluscs(41%),echinoderms(35%) and crustaceans(20.6%) were the dominant taxa in *** has implemented a large government initiative to promote research,investment and best practices in freshwater and marine releases,with a focus in marine waters largely on invertebrates,particularly penaeid prawns(～80% of releases in 2015).In other regions considered in the review,releases have been of a much smaller scale(millions of released individuals each year) and the focus of releases has been largely on species of recreational significance such as penaeid prawns(Penaeus plebejus,Metapenaeus dalli),and Mulloway(Agryrosomus japonicas) in Australia and red Drum(Sciaenops ocellatus) and Snook(Centropomus undecimalis) in the United States.

rediscovering Don Swanson:The Past,Present and Future of Literature-based Discovery

Purpose： The late Don r. Swanson was well appreciated during his lifetime as Dean of the Graduate Library School at University of Chicago, as winner of the American Society for Information Science Award of Merit for 2000, and as author of many seminal articles. In this informal essay, I will give my personal perspective on Don＇s contributions to science, and outline some current and future directions in literature-based discovery that are rooted in concepts that he ***/methodology/approach： Personal recollections and literature review. Findings： The Swanson A-B-C model of literature-based discovery has been successfully used by laboratory investigators analyzing their findings and hypotheses. It continues to be a fertile area of research in a wide range of application areas including text mining, drug repurposing, studies of scientific innovation, knowledge discovery in databases, and bioinformatics. recently, additional modes of discovery that do not follow the A-B-C model have also been proposed and explored （e.g. so-called storytelling, gaps, analogies, link prediction, negative consensus, outliers, and revival of neglected or discarded research questions）. research limitations： This paper reflects the opinions of the author and is not a comprehensive nor technically based review of literature-based discovery. Practical implications： The general scientific public is still not aware of the availability of tools for literature-based discovery. Our Arrowsmith project site maintains a suite of discovery tools that are free and open to the public （http：//***）, as does BITOLA which is maintained by Dmitar Hristovski （http：// http：//***/bitola）, and Epiphanet which is maintained by Trevor Cohen （http：//***/）. recent progress in the green synthesis of rare-earth doped upconversion nanophosphors for optical bioimaging from cells to animals

rare-earth doped upconversion nanophosphors(UCNPs), which convert low energy near-infrared(NIr) photons into high energy photons such as ultraviolet, visible light and NIr light, have found various applications in optical bioimaging. In this review article, we summarize recent advances in the synthesis and applications of UCNPs achieved by us and other groups in the past few years. The approaches for the synthesis of UCNPs are presented,with an emphasis on the role of green chemistry in the advancement of this field, followed by a focused overview on their latest applications in optical bioimaging from subcellular structures through cells to living animals. Challenges and opportunities for the use of UCNPs in biomedical diagnosis and therapy are discussed.

Mainstreaming Disaster risk reduction and Climate Change Adaptation in Comprehensive Development Planning of the Cities in Nueva Ecija in the Philippines

recent scientific consensus suggests that climate-related disasters are becoming more frequent and ***,increasing importance is given to disaster risk reduction(Drr)and climate change adaptation(CCA)in global *** projected global warming at 1.5℃and the climate variability that the Philippine archipelago experiences make Drr-CCA the key priorities of both the national and local government *** this study,we assessed and measured the degree of mainstreaming of Drr-CCA in the comprehensive development plans(CDPs)of the five component cities in the province of Nueva Ecija in the *** are among the areas in Central Luzon that are susceptible to hydrometeorological and geologic *** distributed survey questionnaires to 25 employees of the local government units in the five component cities in Nueva Ecija who are directly involved in planning *** triangulated their responses using archival data(review of written policies and plans).The main findings of the study indicate that in spite the presence of laws and policies on Drr-CCA,their implementation is only in the preliminary *** results also provide insights to policymakers and future researchers on the challenges and opportunities influencing the systemic mainstreaming of Drr-CCA in the province.

Acid-insoluble ash is a better indigestible marker than chromic oxide to measure apparent total tract digestibility in pigs

The aim of this study was to determine the apparent total tract digestibility(ATTD)of nutrients in cottonseed meal(CSM)and soybean meal(SBM)in simple carbohydrate and more complex wheat-based diets using 2 indigestible markers and total faecal ***-five Large White×Landrace boars(57.8 kg)were randomly allocated to either a pure wheat diet,40%CSM or SBM in either a sugar-starch-(1∶1)or wheat-based diet for 18 ***-insoluble ash(AIA)and chromic oxide(Cr2O3)were included in all diets as indigestible *** were offered(1,800 g/d per pig)in 3 meals/d from d 1 to 11 and 8 meals/d from d 12 to *** d 9,the pigs were moved to individual metabolism cages to allow total faecal *** d 18,the pigs were fed hourly for 8 *** the 8th meal,pigs were anaesthetized and digesta sampled from the terminal ileum and rectum before lethal *** were no differences between ATTD of nitrogen(N)determined using AIA as a marker and measured by total faecal *** the other hand,the ATrD of N of diets containing CSM in sugar-starch-or wheat-based diets and the pure wheat diet determined using Cr2O3 as a marker was less(-3.11%,-4.46%and-6.59%;Pred by total faecal *** ATTD of N determined using AIA as a marker was highly correlated with that measured using total faecal collection(Pr2=0.95).Similarly,the ATTD of N determined using Cr2O3 as a marker was correlated with that measured using total faecal collection,although the correlation was not quite as strong as using AIA(Pr2=0.87).Also,the slope of the regression line and the intercept were closer to unity and zero for the relationship when the ATTD of N was determined using AIA compared to Cr2O3 as an indigestible *** ATTD of organic and dry matter behaved *** data demonstrate that the basal diet and choice of indigestible marker can substantially influence the ATTD and that the use of AIA as an indigestible marker is more suita

Costs and benefits of hosting Epichloë endophytes: a comparison of three haplotypes in Lolium perenne with contrasting effects on two herbivores

Basal diet and indigestible marker influence apparent digestibilities of nitrogen and amino acids of cottonseed meal and soybean meal in pigs

This study was to determine the apparent ileal nitrogen(N)and amino acid digestibilities of cottonseed meal(CSM)and soybean meal(SBM)in simple carbohydrate-based and more complex wheat-based *** five Large White × Landrace boars(40.9 kg)were randomly allocated to one of 5 dietary treatments:a wheat diet,40% CSM in either a sugar:starch(1:1)or wheat-based diet,or 40% SBM in either a sugar:starch or wheat-based diet for 14 *** diets contained vitamins,minerals,and contained acid-insoluble ash(AIA)and Cr2 O3 as indigestible *** were offered(1,800 g/pig per d)in3 meals/d on d 1-11 and 8 meals/d on d *** d 14,the pigs were fed hourly for 8 *** the 8 th meal,pigs were anaesthetised with isoflurothane,and ileal and faecal digesta sampled from the terminal ileum and rectum before lethal injection of *** ileal digestibility(AID)of N was greater(12.1%)when CSM was fed in the wheat-based diet as compared to the simple carbohydrate-based diet,whereas apparent ileal N digestibility of SBM was slightly lower(-4.5%)in the wheat-based diet as compared to the sugar:starch-based *** ileal amino acid digestibility generally respondeds similarly to ***,while there was a wide difference in apparent N and amino acid digestibilities of SBM and CSM when they were fed in the sugar:starch-based diets,these differences were less apparent when they were fed the wheat-based *** was an apparent net release of N into the hindgut of pigs fed CSM in both base ***,there was quite substantial apparent digestion of N in the hindgut of pigs fed SBM in both base *** use of Cr2 O3 as an indigestible marker resulted in lower apparent ileal and faecal digestibilities than using AIA,particularly for diets containing *** data demonstrate that the basal diet and choice of indigestible marker can substantially influence the estimate of apparent N digestibility,this response can differ for different protein meals.

Exposure to dietary mercury alters cognition and behavior of zebra finches

Environmental stressors can negatively affect avian cognitive abilities, potentially reducing fitness, for example by altering response to predators, display to mates, or memory of locations of food. We expand on current knowledge by investigating the effects of dietary mercury, a ubiquitous en- vironmental pollutant and known neurotoxin, on avian cognition. Zebra finches Taeniopygia gut- tata were dosed for their entire lives with sub-lethal levels of mercury, at the environmentally rele- vant dose of 1.2 parts per million. In our first study, we compared the dosed birds with controls of the same age using tests of three cognitive abilities： spatial memory, inhibitory control, and color association. In the spatial memory assay, birds were tested on their ability to learn and remember the location of hidden food in their cage. The inhibitory control assay measured their ability to ig- nore visible but inaccessible food in favor of a learned behavior that provided the same reward. Finally, the color association task tested each bird＇s ability to associate a specific color with the presence of hidden food. Dietary mercury negatively affected spatial memory ability but not inhibi- tory control or color association. Our second study focused on three behavioral assays not tied to a specific skill or problem-solving： activity level, neophobia, and social dominance. Zebra finches exposed to dietary mercury throughout their lives were subordinate to, and more active than, con- trol birds. We found no evidence that mercury exposure influenced our metric of neophobia. Together, these results suggest that sub-lethal exposure to environmental mercury selectively harms neurological pathways that control different cognitive abilities, with complex effects on be- havior and fitness.
