Structural and Operational Optimization of A Flapping Fin Used as A Self-Propulsor for AUV Propulsion

Marine mammals could directly harvest energy from waves and obtain propulsive force through oscillating flapping fins or horizontal tail flukes,which in many cases have been observed and proved to be *** propulsion generated by the flapping fin has been analyzed by many researchers from both the theoretical and experimental prospects;however,the structural and operational optimization of a flapping fin for the optimal propulsion performance has been less studied,such as the investigation of the effects of the phase difference between heave and pitch motion,maximum oscillation angle,fin shape,oscillation centre of the fin and the operating sea state on the generated *** this paper,the flapping fin is used as a self-propulsor to propel an autonomous underwater vehicle(AUV)for propulsion *** the optimization design of the flapping fin,its propulsion effect is numerically investigated with different structural parameters and under various operation conditions using computational fluid dynamics(CFd)*** and validation study have been implemented to quantify the numerical uncertainties and evaluate the accuracy of the proposed CFd ***,a series of case studies are thoroughly conducted to investigate the effects of different structural parameters and operational conditions on the generated propulsion of a flapping fin by CFd *** simulation results demonstrate that different structural parameters and operation conditions would significantly impact the magnitude and distribution state of the fluid pressure around the flapping fin surface,thus,affect the propulsion performance of the *** findings in this study will provide guidelines for the structural and operational optimization design of a flapping fin for self-propulsion of mobile platforms.

A crime is a deliberate act that can cause physical or psychological harm,as well as property damage or loss,and can lead to punishment by a state or other authority according to the severity of the *** number and forms of criminal activities are increasing at an alarming rate,forcing agencies to develop efficient methods to take preventive *** the current scenario of rapidly increasing crime,traditional crime-solving techniques are unable to deliver results,being slow paced and less ***,if we can come up with ways to predict crime,in detail,before it occurs,or come up with a“machine”that can assist police officers,it would lift the burden of police and help in preventing *** achieve this,we suggest including machine learning(ML)and computer vision algorithms and *** this paper,we describe the results of certain cases where such approaches were used,and which motivated us to pursue further research in this *** main reason for the change in crime detection and prevention lies in the before and after statistical observations of the authorities using such *** sole purpose of this study is to determine how a combination of ML and computer vision can be used by law agencies or authorities to detect,prevent,and solve crimes at a much more accurate and faster *** summary,ML and computer vision techniques can bring about an evolution in law agencies.

Novel case of Trevor's disease:Adult onset and later recurrence

dysplasia epiphysealis hemimelica(dEH),or Trevor’s disease,is an osteocartilaginous epiphyseal overgrowth typically occurring in *** literature reports6 adult cases and none describe recurrence requiring additional *** present a new-onset proximal tibial dEH in an adult recurring approximately 3 years after open excision.A 39-year-old female presented with a history of right knee pain,swelling,and *** examination revealed a firm proximal tibial *** tomography(CT)imaging showed an exophytic,lobulated,sclerotic mass involving the anterolateral margin of the lateral tibial *** resonance imaging was suggestive of an *** patient underwent curettage of the lesion due to its periarticular *** revealed benign and reactive bone and cartilage consistent with periosteal *** and a half years later,the patient presented with a firm,palpable mass larger than the initial *** revealed a lateral tibial plateau sclerotic mass consistent with recurrent intraarticular dEH.A complete excision was performed and histology showed sclerotic bone with overlying cartilage consistent with *** is a rare epiphyseal osteocartilaginous outgrowth frequently occurring in the long bones of children less than 8 years *** resembles an osteochondroma due to its pediatric presentation and similar histologic *** cases comprise less than 1%of reported *** rate after surgical intervention is *** 1 such case,occurring in a child,has been *** contemplating operative treatment for dEH should note the potential for recurrence and consider complete excision.A follow-up period of several years may be warranted to identify recurrent lesions.

Affective responses to supervised 10-week programs of resistance exercise in older adults

Background:Resistance exercise has numerous,well-documented benefits on the health and functional performance of older ***,little information exists on the affective responses to resistance exercise in this *** affective responses can predict continued exercise behavior,examining if and how they differ between resistance exercise intensities and frequencies in older adults may provide important data to improve resistance exercise ***:We monitored the affective responses of older adults when performing high-velocity,low-load(HVLL)or low-velocity,high-load(LVHL)resistance exercise once or twice weekly.A total of 40 moderately to highly active,but resistance-exercise naïve,older adults(60-79 years)completed 1 of 4 randomly assigned progressive resistance exercise conditions:HVLL once weekly(HVLL1:n=10),HVLL twice weekly(HVLL2:n=10),LVHL once weekly(LVHL1:n=10),or LVHL twice weekly(LVHL2:n=10).The Physical Activity Affect Scale,Felt Arousal Scale,Feeling Scale,rating of perceived exertion,Visual Analog Scale,and the Physical Activity Enjoyment Scale were used to assess enjoyment and affective ***:The results from Physical Activity Enjoyment Scale(out of 35)suggest that all exercise conditions were largely and similarly enjoyable to older adults(HVLL1:30.9±2.4;LVHL1:31.9±3.6;HVLL2:30.9±3.5;LVHL2:30.2±3.7)despite greater fatigue(p=0.033;ηp^2p=0.22)and perceived workload(p=0.042;ηp^2=0.20)in LVHL(results from Visual Analog Scale).Conclusion:Moderately to highly physically active older adults may tolerate higher intensities of resistance exercise performed once or twice weekly without experiencing a negative impact on ***,the role that supervision and social interaction played in shaping the participants’responses is unclear.

The true freshwater crabs(Crustacea,decapoda,Brachyura) are highly adapted to life in freshwater and complete their life cycle entirely independently of sea *** true freshwater crabs exhibit direct development and lack the free-living larval forms(zoea and megalopa) typical of most other *** a prolonged embryonic period(during which they pass through the typical brachyuran larval forms embryologically) the eggs of true freshwater crabs hatch to produce juvenile(hatchling) *** provide here the first report and description of the continuous record of embryonic development from egg-laying up to hatching in the Chinese true freshwater crab Sinopotamon yangtsekiense Bott,1967(Potamoidea,Potamidae).direct development(complete secondary embryonization) in *** was observed to take 77 days and to include an additional embryonic phase(termed here the egg-juvenile-crab) that occurs in the embryo between the imprisoned megalopa and the newly-emerged juvenile(hatchling) *** is significant because the only other freshwater crab whose embryonic development has been studied in detail is Potamon fluviatilis(Potamidae) which takes 45-47 days and involves only nine embryonic stages.

Nanoscale control of Ag nanostructures for plasmonic fluorescence enhancement of near-infrared dyes

Potential utilization of proteins for early detection and diagnosis of various diseases has drawn considerable interest in the development of protein-based detection techniques. Metal induced fluorescence enhancement offers the possibility of increasing the sensitivity of protein detection in clinical applications. We report the use of tunable plasmonic silver nanostructures for the fluorescence enhancement of a near-infrared （NIR） dye （Alexa Fluor 790）. Extensive fluorescence enhan- cement of -2 orders of magnitude is obtained by the nanoscale control of the Ag nanostructure dimensions and interparticle distance. These Ag nanostructures also enhanced fluorescence from a dye with very high quantum yield （7.8 fold for Alexa Fluor 488, quantum efficiency （Qy） = 0.92）. A combination of greatly enhanced excitation and an increased radiative decay rate, leading to an associated enhancement of the quantum efficiency leads to the large enhancement. These results show the potential of Ag nanostructures as metal induced fluorescence enhancement （MIFE） substrates for dyes in the NIR ＂biological window＂ as well as the visible region. Ag nanostructured arrays fabricated by colloidal lithography thus show great potential for NIR dye-based biosensing applications.
