Exploring the efficacy of natural products in alleviating Alzheimer’s disease

Alzheimer’s disease(hereafter AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder that affects the central nervous system. There are multiple factors that cause AD, viz., accumulation of extracellular Amyloid-beta 42 plaques, intracellular hyper-phosphorylated Tau tangles, generation of reactive oxygen species due to mitochondrial dysfunction and genetic mutations. The plaques and tau tangles trigger aberrant signaling, which eventually cause cell death of the neurons. As a result, there is shrinkage of brain, cognitive defects, behavioral and psychological problems. To date, there is no direct cure for AD. Thus, scientists have been testing various strategies like screening for the small inhibitor molecule library or natural products that may block or prevent onset of AD. Historically, natural products have been used in many cultures for the treatment of various diseases. The research on natural products have gained importance as the active compounds extracted from them have medicinal values with reduced side effects, and they are bioavailable. The natural products may target the proteins or members of signaling pathways that get altered in specific diseases. Many natural products are being tested in various animal model systems for their role as a potential therapeutic target for AD, and to address questions about how these natural products can rescue AD or other neurodegenerative disorders. Some of these products are in clinical trials and results are promising because of their neuroprotective, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, anti-amyloidogenic, anticholinesterase activities and easy availability. This review summarizes the use of animal model systems to identify natural products, which may serve as potential therapeutic targets for AD.

In the present era of Big Data the demand for developing efficient information processing techniques for different applications is expanding *** such possible application is automatic creation of *** an ontology is often found to be helpful for answering queries for the underlying *** present work proposes a scheme for designing an ontology for agriculture *** proposed scheme works in two *** the first step it uses domain-dependent regular expressions and natural language processing techniques for automatic extraction of vocabulary pertaining to agriculture *** the second step semantic relationships between the extracted terms and phrases are identified.A rulebased reasoning algorithm RelExOnt has been proposed for the said *** evaluation of the term extraction output yields precision and recall of 75.7%and 60%,*** relation extraction algorithm,RelExOnt performs well with an average precision of 86.89%.

Administration of Fenugreek Seed Extract Produces Better Effects in Glibenclamide-Induced Inhibition in Hepatic Lipid Peroxidation: An in vitro Study

Objective: To evaluate the comparative effects of fenugreek(Trigonel a foenum graecum) seed extract(FSE) alone and in combination with an antidiabetic conventional medicine,glibenclamide(GLB),on the inhibition of in vitro lipid peroxidation(LPO) in liver,the major target organ of a ***: LPO was induced by ferrous sulphate(Fe So4),hydrogen peroxide(H2 O2) and carbon tetrachloride(CCl4) and the effects of test seed extract and/or GLB were ***: While Fe So4,H2 O2 and CCl4 markedly enhanced the hepatic LPO,simultaneous administration of FSE reduced it in a concentration dependent ***,when both FSE and GLB were added to the incubation mixture,chemical y induced hepatic LPO was further *** test extract also exhibited high antioxidative activity in 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl radical and in 2,2'-azino-bis,3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulphonic acid radical scavenging ***: FSE therapy in moderate concentration along with a hypoglycemic drug may prove to be advantageous in ameliorating diabetes mel itus and other diseases that are LPO mediated.

Axially Oriented Structured Porous Layers for Heat Transfer Enhancement in a Solar Receiver Tube

The present work reports a numerical investigation of heat transfer and pressure drop characteristics in a solar receiver tube with different shaped porous media for laminar and low Reynolds number turbulent flow *** simulations have been performed with finite volume-based code ANSYS(v-2017)for different shapes of porous layers axially oriented in the *** plain-shaped porous medium fitted up to 50%of the tube shows better performance than other-shaped porous *** have also been performed for axially oriented structured porous media with different *** oriented structured porous medium develops a lateral flow disturbance enhancing the intermixing of the liquid and porous medium at their *** porous medium with a 3-crest configuration shows the best heat transfer performance among all the shapes of porous *** offers a maximum of 148%heat transfer enhancement compared to a half-filled plain porous layer,whereas it reports a maximum of 564%enhancement compared to the flow without a porous *** lateral flow tendency or the swirling effect helps better heat transfer performance in the axially oriented structured porous *** evaluation criterion(PEC)in all types of porous media is more in the transitional flow regime than in the laminar and turbulent flow *** the same operating conditions,the maximum value of the PEC in the present work is 120%higher than the maximum value of PEC for other-shaped porous media reported in the *** for Nusselt number have been developed for both laminar and turbulent flow regimes for three crests shaped porous medium.

Knights in Action： Lectin Receptor-Like Kinases in Plant Development and Stress Responses

The Receptor-Like Kinase （RLK） is a vast protein family with over 600 genes in Arabidopsis and 1100 in rice. The Lectin RLK （LecRLK） family is believed to play crucial roles in saccharide signaling as well as stress perception. All the LecRLKs possess three domains： an N-terminal lectin domain, an intermediate transmembrane domain, and a C-terminal kinase domain. On the basis of lectin domain variability, LecRLKs have been subgrouped into three subclasses： L-, G-, and C-type LecRLKs. While the previous studies on LecRLKs were dedicated to classification, comparative structural analysis and expression analysis by promoter-based studies, most of the recent studies on LecRLKs have laid special emphasis on the potential of this gene family in regulating biotic/abiotic stress and developmental pathways in plants, thus mak- ing the prospects of studying the LecRLK-mediated regulatory mechanism exceptionally promising. In this review, we have described in detail the LecRLK gene family with respect to a historical, evolutionary, and structural point of view. Furthermore, we have laid emphasis on the LecRLKs roles in development, stress conditions, and hormonal response. We have also discussed the exciting research prospects offered by the current knowledge on the LecRLK gene family. The multitude of the LecRLK gene family members and their functional diversity mark these genes as both interesting and worthy candidates for further analysis, especially in the field of crop improvement.

AstroSat Observations of the Be/X-Ray Binary XTE J1946+274 During 2018 and 2021 Outbursts

We present the timing and spectral studies of the Be/X-ray binary XTE J1946+274 during its 2018 and 2021 giant outbursts using observations with the SXT and LAXPC instruments on the AstroSat *** the 1998 and 2010 outbursts,where a giant outburst was followed by several low intensity periodic outbursts,the 2018 and 2021 outbursts were single *** X-ray pulsations are detected over a broad energy band covering 0.5–80 keV from the compact *** construct the spin evolution history of the pulsar over two decades and find that the pulsar spins-up during the outbursts but switches to spin-down state in the quiescent periods between the *** resolved pulse profiles generated in several bands in 0.5–80 keV show that the pulse shape varies with the *** energy spectrum of the pulsar is determined for the 2018 and 2021 *** best fit spectral models require presence of cyclotron resonant scattering feature at about 43 keV in the energy spectra of both the *** find indication of possible reversal in the correlation between the cyclotron line energy and luminosity which needs to be ascertained from future *** the best fit spectra the X-ray luminosity of XTE J1946+274 is inferred to be 2.7×10^(37) erg s^(-1) for the 2018 observations and 2.3×10^(37) erg s^(-1) for the 2021 *** discuss possible mechanisms which can drive outbursts in this transient Be X-ray binary.

Efficacy of Tourniquet Application in Minimizing Intraoperative Blood Loss in Cesarean Hysterectomies for Placenta Accreta—A Comparative Study

Objective: To assess the effect of tourniquet application of intraoperative blood loss in placenta accreta cases undergoing cesarean hysterectomy. Materials and methods: Nine cases and twenty controls with USG and colour Doppler diagnosed placenta accreta with previous cesarean section were chosen to utilize this novel approach. These cases were planned for elective cesarean section followed by hysterectomy. The twenty controls underwent a classical cesarean section followed by total abdominal hysterectomy with the placenta?in situ. Among the nine cases, after delivery of the fetus through upper segment cesarean section, a cotton gauze tourniquet was applied all around the lower pole of uterus. Hysterectomy was performed with placenta?in situ. Abdomen closed after achieving complete haemostasis. Results: The average operative time taken was 85 ± 11.72 minutes among cases and 98.25 ± 9.9 minutes among controls (p = 0.0039). Average blood loss was 1011.11 ± 99.3 ml among the cases and 1855 ± 222.95 ml among the controls (p ≤ 0.0001). Average requirement of blood transfusion required was two units for the cases and five units for the controls (p = 0.0002). No intra-operative or post-operative surgical complications were observed in any of the cases whereas the controls reportedly had a few. All the mothers and babies were healthy at the time of discharge. Conclusion: The presence of placenta accreta is associated with major fetal and maternal complications. The technique of tourniquet application is efficacious in minimizing the intra-operative blood loss and surgical complications due to obstruction of operative field by bleeding and also by preventing massive blood transfusion related complications.

Dynamical Casimir effect in superradiant light scattering by Bose Einstein condensate in an optomechanical cavity

We investigate the effects of dynamical Casimir effect in superradiant light scattering by Bose-Einstein condensate in an optomechanical cavity. The system is studied using both classical and quantized mirror motions. The cavity frequency is harmonically modulated in time for both the cases. The main quantity of interest is the number of intracavity scattered photons. The system has been investigated under the weak and strong modulations. It has been observed that the amplitude of the scattered photons is more for the classical mirror motion than the quantized mirror motion. Also, initially, the amplitude of scattered photons is high for lower modulation amplitude than higher modulation amplitude. We also found that the behavior of the plots are similar under strong and weak modulations for the quantized mirror motion.
