Population genetic structure and diversity of high value vulnerable medicinal plant Acorus calamus in India using RAPD and chloroplast microsatellite markers

Acorus calamus is a highly valued medicinal plant with global distribution used in several drugs of health care systems. We evaluated the genetic diversity and population structure of 50 populations of A. calamus from different geographical regions in India through RAPD and chloroplast microsatellite markers. From the total screened 82 RAPD primers and 18 cpSSR primers, 10 RAPD and nine cpSSRs were found polymorphic. The selected 10 RAPD primers produced a total of 96 reproducible bands, out of which 65 were polymorphic （67.70%）. Whereas, the selected nine cpSSR markers produced 26 alleles and all of them were polymorphic. The mean genetic diversity （H T ） among populations using RAPD （H T = 0.263） and cpSSR （H T = 0.530） markers was higher in comparison to the mean genetic diversity within populations. Mean coefficient of gene differentiation （G ST ） between the populations was also high for both RAPD （G ST = 0.830） and cpSSR markers （G ST = 0.735）, whereas the estimated gene flow was very low for RAPD （Nm = 0.102） and for cpSSR （Nm = 0.179）. AMOVA analysis revealed that more genetic variation resided among the populations than within populations. Significant differences （p 0.001） were observed between the populations and individuals within the populations. Cluster analysis of RAPD and cpSSR data using UPGMA algorithm based on Nei’s genetic similarity matrix placed the 50 populations into two main clusters. The implication of the results of this study in devising strategy for conservation of A. calamus is discussed.

Knowledge, Attitude and Practice Regarding HIV/AIDS among Students in China

HIV/AIDS remains one of the world’s most significant public health challenges, particularly in low and middle-income region. China has witnessed a moderate effect of global HIV/AIDS endemic for which HIV/AIDS awareness and prevention program have been developed and conducted. In China the university students are among the affected target population because of the recent development of casual attitude towards sex, the rapid economic revolution and degradation of traditional value. The purpose of this paper is to describe HIV/AIDS knowledge, attitudes, and practice and identify personal risk behaviors among students in China. Selection of the articles suitable for the review was done from 2007 to 2016 on the basis of their study regarding HIV/AIDS in accordance with different students of schools, undergraduate and postgraduate study. Knowledge of the students is accordance with their education level while attitude have no relation with the knowledge and still there is unsafe sexual practice present among students. Although students have good knowledge regarding HIV/AIDS, they have still negative attitude towards HIV/AIDS patients. There are still misconceptions especially concerning mosquitos and kissing as routes of transmission of HIV. There is difficulty in separating HIV from AIDS by many students. Due to insufficient knowledge regarding HIV/AIDS among school students many of them believe that there is a medicine that can cure HIV/AIDS. Comparatively Students are more focused on knowledge regarding HIV/AIDS rather than developing and maintaining safe sexual behavior among the students. We believe that the review will help to focus further into the more effective attitude based implementation of knowledge and practice among Chinese students.

The ongoing pandemic caused by the novel coronavirus,SARS-CoV-2,is influencing global ***,there is a major threat of future coronaviruses affecting the entire world in a similar,or even more dreadful,***,effective and biocompatible therapeutic options against coronaviruses are urgently *** address this challenge,medical specialists require a well-informed and safe approach to treating human coronaviruses(HCoVs).Herein,an environmental friendly approach for viral inactivation,based on plasma technology,was considered.A microwave plasma system was employed for the generation of the high amount of gaseous nitric oxide to prepare nitric oxide enriched plasma-activated water(NO-PAW),the effects of which on coronaviruses,have not been reported to *** determine these effects,alpha-HCoV-229E was used in an experimental *** found that NO-PAW treatment effectively inhibited coronavirus infection in host lung cells,visualized by evaluating the cytopathic effect and expression level of spike ***,NO-PAW showed minimal toxicity towards lung host cells,suggesting its potential for therapeutic ***,this new approach resulted in viral inactivation and greatly improved the gene levels involved in host antiviral ***,our findings provide evidence of an initiation point for further progress toward the clinical development of antiviral treatments,including such coronaviruses.

Wireless Sensor Networks have been implemented in many indoor applications such as offices, hospitals, laboratories for monitoring the parameters such as temperature, humidity etc. Most of the applications have used omnidirectional antennas. In randomly deployed ad hoc wireless sensor networks, this may be useful to achieve coverage and connectivity with unknown neighbors. In case of deterministic deployments such as in case of food grain storages where locations of the sensor nodes are mostly fixed, the main challenges are unstable and vacillating conditions in the godowns during loading and unloading of sacs as well as unpredictable changes in climate. Most of the commercial motes generally use omnidirectional antennas. Energy overheads increase considerably with omnidirectional antennas. Directivity increases energy saving but may be at the cost of redundancy. This paper is mainly focused on the energy advantage in ad hoc wireless sensor networks deployed in large food grain storages and energy overheads required for obtaining certain level of redundancy using directional antennas. Finally, we conclude that energy advantage can be achieved even if we overcome redundancy to certain extent.

Presently, no effective tool exists for early diagnosis and treatment of oral cancer. Here, we describe an approach for cancer detection and prevention based on analysis using association rule mining. The data analyzed are pertaining to clinical symptoms, history of addiction, co-morbid condition and survivability of the cancer patients. The extracted rules are useful in taking clinical judgments and making right decisions related to the disease. The results shown here are promising and show the potential use of this approach toward eventual development of diagnostic assay and treatment with sufficient support and confidence suitable for detection of early-stage oral cancer.

Large inter annual variation in air quality during the annual festival ‘Diwali' in an Indian megacity

A network of air quality and weather monitoring stations was established under the System of Air Quality Forecasting and Research（SAFAR） project in Delhi. We report observations of ozone（O_3）, nitrogen oxides（NO_x）, carbon monoxide（CO） and particulate matter（PM_2.5and PM_（10）） before, during and after the Diwali in two consecutive years, i.e., November 2010 and October 2011. The Diwali days are characterised by large firework displays throughout India. The observations show that the background concentrations of particulate matter are between 5 and 10 times the permissible limits in Europe and the United States. During the Diwali-2010, the highest observed PM_（10） and PM_2.5mass concentration is as high as2070 μg/m^3 and 1620 μg/m3, respectively（24 hr mean）, which was about 20 and 27 times to National Ambient Air Quality Standards（NAAQS）. For Diwali-2011, the increase in PM_（10） and PM_2.5mass concentrations was much less with their peaks of 600 and of 390 μg/m^3 respectively, as compared to the background concentrations. Contrary to previous reports,firework display was not found to strongly influence the NO_x, and O_3 mixing ratios, with the increase within the observed variability in the background. CO mixing ratios showed an increase. We show that the large difference in 2010 and 2011 pollutant concentrations is controlled by weather parameters.
