Aim: To study the effects of adrenalectomy and hydrocortisone on the ventral prostate of sD rats. Methods: Inadrenalectomised (ADX) and ADX + hydrocortisone (1, 2, or 4 mg) treated rats, the prostatic histology and thecholesterol, protein, zinc, and copper levels and the enzymic profile (acid phosphatase, alkaline phosphatase, aryl sul-phatase, lactic dehydrogenase, and leucine aminopeptidase) in the prostatic tissue were determined; the serum hormon-al profile (testosterone, FsH and LH) was also assayed. results; Adrenalectomy caused a progressive degenerationin prostatic structure that was not reversed by hydrocortisone treatment. The serum testosterone were significantly lowerin ADX than in sham operated rats and lower in ADX + hydrocortisone than in ADX-C rats (P serumFsH and LH were below the detection limit of 1 mIU/mL. The enzymatic activity was higher in ADX than in sham op-erated rats and higher in ADX + hydrocortisone than in ADX-C rats (Prostatic zinc levels weresignificantly higher in sham operated than in ADX, and higher in ADX-C than in ADX + hydrocortisone rats (P rostatic copper level was significantly lower in sham operated than in ADX, and lower in ADX-C thanin the ADX + hydrocortisone rats (P sion; In rats, adrenalectomy leads to pathological and func-tional changes of the prostate. We monitored the prevalence of endoparasitic infections of rodents in Punjab state, India, between January 2004and December 2005. Three species of wild rodents, namely the house rat, rattus rattus (n = 42), the lesserbandicoot rat, Bandicota bengalensis (n = 34) and the Indian gerbil, Tatera indica (n = 15), were live-captured fromhouses and crop fields. Examination of various organs revealed that the highest rates of endoparasitic infectionoccurred in r. rattus (40.5%), followed by B. bengalensis (35.3 %) and then T. indica (20.0%), with an overallinfection rate of 35.2%. All three rodent species were found naturally infected with one or more species ofhelminths. Metacestodes (1–6) of Cysticercus fasciolaris (larvae of Taenia taeniaeformis) were found in all threerodent species (in the liver). In one male T. indica, numerous robust T. taeniaeformis metacestodes were found inoval sacs attached to the mesentery and the abdominal wall, an unusual site. The cauda epididymal fluid of thesame gerbil was also found to be infected with a very rare species of strongylid nematode, which could not beidentified to genus or species level. It is possible that this nematode is transmitted sexually and thus may affect thereproductive potential of gerbils. This appears to be the first report of this phenomenon. In one B. bengalensisindividual, the intestine was found to be obstructed with an acanthocephalan, Moniliformis moniliformis, withconcurrent infection with C. fasciolaris in the form of multiple cysts in the liver. Although no natural protozoaninfection was found in these field rodents, experimental Trypanosoma evansi infection has been established in allthree species with high pathogenicity, and the possibility of sexual transmission was supported by the presence of *** in the cauda epididymal fluid of male rats.

A Comparative Investigation on the structural,Optical and Electrical Properties of siO_2-Fe_3O_4 Core-shell Nanostructures with Their single Components

The siO2-Fe3O4 core-shell nanostructures were synthesized by sol-gel chemistry. The morphological features of the nanostructures were examined by field emission scanning electron microscopy which revealed the core-shell nature of the nanoparticles. X-ray diffraction studies evidenced the formation of siO2-Fe3O4 core-shell nanostructures with high degree of homogeneity. The elemental composition of the siO2-Fe3O4 core-shell nanostructures was determined by energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy analysis. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy showed the si-O-Fe stretching vibrations. On analysis of the optical properties with UV-Vis spectra and Tauc＇s plot, it was found that the band gap of siO2-Fe3O4 core-shell nanostructures diminished to 1.5 eV. Investigation of the electrical properties of the core-shell nanostructures using field-dependent conductivity measurements presented a significant increase in photoconductivity as compared to those of its single components, thereby rendering them as promising candidates for application as photo- electrodes in dye-sensitized solar cells.

We report a comparative investigation of the characteristics of modified TiO2 nanorods grown on conducting indium tin oxide glass （/TO） substrates by two different hydrothermal methods： the direct method by which rutile TiOa nanorods were grown directly on plain ITO substrates and the seed-mediated one using which a thin film of anatase TiO2 seed layer was laid down by spin coating and annealing prior to the growth of TiO2 nanorods on it. Microstructural analysis of the samples using X-ray diffraction confirmed their rutile nature. The average crystallite size estimated using scherrer＇s formula was found to fall in the range of 11-17 nm in both cases. Field emission scanning electron microscopy revealed the nanorod morphologies of a dandelion arrangement in the case of directly grown ones and a proper vertical orientation in the case of the seed-mediated method. UV-Vis spectroscopy analysis of both the samples exhibited redshifts with intense absorption of visible radiation, and the seed-mediated one was found to possess an increased bandgap. The transport nature of the samples was characterized by significant increase in both dark and photocurrents. The results show that the dark and photocurrent values of the directly grown TiO2 nanorods were greater than those of the seed-mediated ones by - seven and five folds, respectively, and therefore, it could serve as efficient photoelectrodes in dye-sensitized solar cells.

TiBN coatings have huge potential applications as they have excellent properties with increasing modem industrial *** TiBN coatings were synthesized on cemented carbide,high speed steel and si substrates by using cathodic arc plasma ion plating from pure TiB2 ceramic *** structure and mechanical properties of the TiBN coatings were significantly influenced by the nitrogen partial *** backscattering spectrometry demonstrates that the nitrogen content of the coating varied from 2.8% to 34.5% and highresolution electron microscopy images reveal that all coatings have the characteristic of nanocrystals embedded in an amorphous *** root-mean-square roughness of the coatings increases from 3.73 to 14.64 nm and the coefficients of friction of the coatings at room temperature vary from 0.54 to 0.73 with increasing nitrogen partial *** microhardness of the coating increases up to 35.7 GPa at 10 sccm N2 flow *** smallest wear rate is 2.65 ×10^-15m^3N^-1m^-1 which indicates that TiBN coatings have excellent wear *** adhesion test revealed that the TiBN coatings have good adhesion at low nitrogen partial pressure.

We fabricated a silver ion emitter based on the solid state electrolyte film of rbAg4 I5 prepared by pulsed laser deposition. The rbAg4 I5 target for PLD process was mechano-chemically synthesized by high-energy ball milling in Ar atmosphere using β-AgI and rbI as raw materials. The ion-conducting properties of rbAg4 I5 were studied by alternating current(AC) impedance spectroscopy and the ionic conductivity at room temperature was estimated 0.21 s/m. The structure, morphology, and elemental composition of the rbAg4 I5 film were investigated. The Ag+ ion-conducting property of the prepared superioni-conductor film was exploited for ion–beam generation. The temperature and accelerating voltage dependences of the ion current were studied. Few nA current was obtained at the temperature of 196?C and the accelerating voltage of 10 kV.
