Background: An intensive care unit (ICU) is a special unit of a hospital that provides intensive treatment for patients with severe or life-threatening illnesses and injuries, which require constant care and close monitoring with life support equipment. The mortality rate is still very high in most ICUs especially in the developing countries due to late presentation of patients, unavailability of well trained staff and lack of life support equipment. There has not been any previous study on the mortality pattern in ICU of Alex Ekwueme Federal University Teaching Hospital Abakaliki (AEFUTHA). It is against this background that we embarked on this retrospective descriptive hospital based study of the mortality pattern in ICU of a Tertiary Hospital in Abakaliki, South-eastern Nigeria. Method: This is a retrospective descriptive hospital based study. The admission and discharge registers of the ICU ward were used to extract information on biodata, diagnosis, duration and outcome of all admissions from January to December 2019 (12 months). The abattoir is one of the important sectors in the food industry, therefore the need for close monitoring of everything concerning it to minimize microbial contamination. The aim of the study is to identify bacteria listed as WHO priority organisms associated with meat from Kwata abattoir in Awka, Anambra state. The study was carried out over a three (3) months period from September to December 2022. Thirteen samples were collected from the floor, table, water, meat, knife and soil in the abattoir. The samples were cultured using streak and spread plate methods on MacConkey and Cetrimide agar. The isolates were identified with the following biochemical tests: catalase, oxidase, citrate and indole tests. Ampiclox levofloxacin, gentamicin, ofloxacin impenem ceftraixone, cefixime, cefuroxime and nitrofurantoin were used for sensitivity test following Kirby Bauer disc diffusion method and biofilm formation was determined using the tube method. The 75 isolates obtained were identified as follows;29.3% E. coli, 26.7% Klebsiella spp., 16% Proteus spp., and 28% Pseudomonas spp. The result of antibiotics sensitivity test interpreted using the European Committee on Antimicrobial Susceptibility Testing (EUCAST) breakpoints showed that (98%) of the isolates were resistant to the antibiotics used. Test for biofilm formation with 52 isolates showed 31 strong, 12 moderate and 9 weak biofilm formers. The result of this study confirms the presence of bacteria contaminants within the WHO priority list in the abattoir, as such there is need for improved handling of animals. Slaughtering, cleaning and distribution of meat should be done using aseptic procedures. .

This study evaluates the characteristic levels,sources and risk of human exposure to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons(PAHs)in indoor dusts from electronic repair workshops in southern *** dust samples were collected by gentle sweeping with a brush and dustpan,and subsequently dried and extracted with hexane/dichloromethane by *** extracts were purified on a silica gel/alumina column,and then analysed for their PAH content by means of gas chromatography-mass *** concentrations of PAHs in the electronic repair workshop dusts ranged between 205 and 2963 mg kg*** compositional patterns indicate the dominance of 5-and 3-ring PAH *** estimated benzo[a]pyrene carcinogenic(BaPTEQ)and mutagenic(BaPMEQ)potency concentrations ranged from 67 to 401 mg kg^-1 and 56.5e277 mg kg^-1 *** non-cancer risk(hazard index,HI)arising from human contact with PAHs in the electronic repair workshop dusts were less than one for all human subject age groups indicating that there is no considerable non-cancer *** cancer risk values for the ingestion and dermal contact routes were greater than the acceptable risk of 10^-6,which suggests that there is a considerable cancer risk associated with unconscious ingestion and dermal contact with dust particles from these electronic repair *** isomeric ratios for the PAHs in the dust samples and principal component analysis suggest that combustion of biomass and vehicular emissions were responsible for the presence of PAHs in the electronic repair workshop dusts.

Background: Yellow fever is transmitted primarily to humans and non-human primates through the bite of an infected female mosquito Aedes Spp. It is prevented mainly by vaccination. Method: This retrospective observational study at the Center for Communicable Disease Control and Research (CCDCR) Federal Medical Center Asaba (F.M.C) was conducted on all patients diagnosed and managed with yellow fever in the year 2020. We studied a total number of 57 patients’ case files seen within the period. A chi-square test was done to test the null and alternative hypotheses. Result: About 48 (84.2%) males and female 9 (15.8%) females were mostly affected and gender was significant with a chi-squared value of 26.6 and p-value of 0.00. Conclusion: To eradicate this virus, vaccination and health promotions should be encouraged by the health care workers supported by the government. This is to ensure that a greater proportion of the affected community can be immunized.
