An Investigation of the Effects of Thermal Interference between Adjacent Nitinol Spring Actuators in a Tactile Display

Over the years, there has been increased research interest in the application of Nitinol as an actuator, due to its shape memory behaviour, simplicity, high power-to-weight ratio, compactness, and extreme high fatigue resistance to cyclic motion, and noiseless operation. Nitinol has found application in tactile displays which reproduce tactile parameters such as texture and shape, depending on the application. This paper presents the effects of thermal interference between adjacent Nitinol spring actuators in a tactile display. The tactile display is made of a 3 by 3 pin array whose spatial resolution was varied from 4 mm to 6 mm in steps of 1 mm while a current of 1.5 A was used to actuate 8 of the springs, and the centre spring was left unactivated to observe the thermal effects on it due to the heat gradient formed. A Finite Element (FE) model was developed using COMSOL Multiphysics and the results were further verified through experimentation. In both cases, there was visible thermal interference between actuators. The increase in spatial resolution saw a decrease in thermal interference by 12.7%. Using a fan to introduce forced convection, reduced the thermal interference in the simulation by 20% and during experimentation by 11%. The results of this research indicate a spatial resolution of 6 mm reduced the thermal inference to a negligible rate. However, thermal interference could not be eliminated with these two methods.

Comparison of Deep Learning Architectures for Late Blight and Early Blight Disease Detection on Potatoes

Potato late blight and early blight are common hazards to the long-term production of potatoes, impacting many farmers around the world, particularly in Africa. Early detection and treatment of the potato blight disease are critical for promoting healthy potato plant growth and ensuring adequate supply and food security for the fast-growing population. As a result, machine-driven disease detection systems may be able to overcome the constraints of traditional leaf disease diagnosis procedures, which are generally time-consuming, inaccurate, and costly. Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) have been shown to be effective in a variety of agricultural applications. CNNs have been shown to be helpful in detecting disease in plants because of their capacity to analyze vast volumes of data quickly and reliably. However, the method hasn’t been widely used in the detection of potato late blight and early blight diseases, which reduce yields significantly. The goal of this study was to compare six cutting-edge CNN architectural models, taking into account transfer learning for training and four hyperparameters. The CNN architectures evaluated were AlexNet, GoogleNet, SqueezeNet, DenseNet121, EfficientNet b7, and VGG19. Likewise, the hyperparameters analyzed were the number of epochs, the batch size, the optimizer, and the learning rate. An open-source dataset containing 4082 images was used. The DenseNet121 architecture with a batch of 32 and a Stochastic Gradient Descent (SGD) optimizer with a learning rate of 0.01 produced the best performance, with an accuracy of 98.34% and a 97.37% f1-score. The DenseNet121 model was shown to be useful in developing computer vision systems that aid farmers in improving their disease management systems for potato cultivation.

This study analyzed the factors influencing entrepreneurship among farmers in Shaanxi, Shandong, Gansu, and Henan provinces;a comparative analysis described the socio-economic and demographic factors. This work utilized primary data collected in 2014 from 1,420 households across the four provinces. This research adopted a probit regression;first Household characteristics then credit characteristics （that make up the socioeconomic and demographic factors） were all regressed against entrepreneurship （in this case, probability of starting a business）. Thereafter ANOVA was used to establish the comparative analysis of influencing *** findings indicate that overall household characteristics and individual credit characteristics significantly influence the probability of starting a business. In addition credit characteristics were noted to influence entrepreneurship. However, the general findings indicate that influence of credit and individual characteristics on entrepreneurship had different significant across the four provinces;according to good prospect for development of that particular industry’s market, personal technology and ability. Also the fact that the nature of the work in that particular industry was easy to perform and required low levels of technology were the reasons farmers chose to venture in their respective *** addition, this study identified financial institutions, family economic condition, Government policy, cultural environment, industry, market environment, personal qualities, family background, and tax administrative environment as the main factors that promote entrepreneurship.

Diplostomum species metacercariae are trematode parasites that pose serious economic threats to aquaculture practice globally. Identification of Diplostomum at metacercariae stage has remained equivocal, hence lack of elucidation of the actual role of these species in fish population. 21 Diplostomoid metacercariae obtained from eyes of Nile tilapia were characterized using 18S and ITS rDNA (ITS1-5.8S-ITS2) genes. Phylogenetic analyses of ITS rDNA gene dataset in the metacercariae revealed close relationship to Diplostomum mashonense and D. baeri. Molecular identification using 18S rDNA sequences revealed close relationship to D. compactum, D. phoxini and D. spathaceum. Overall, genetic analyses in this study depicted a significant unrecognized genetic diversity among Diplostomum species. Successful differentiation of Diplostomum genera in this study using ribosomal markers suggested that 18S and ITS rDNA genes are effective genetic markers for inter-species phylogenetic analysis and should be employed in future for identification of diplostomoidea.

Trends of Temperature and Signature of Solar Activity in Selected Stations in Nigeria

This study investigates the variability and periodicity of minimum temperature, maximum temperature and sunspot number—a solar activity index in selected synoptic stations across Nigeria from 1946 to 2010. Annual and semiannual effect of solar activity on minimum temperature was observed in all the six stations. This was indicated in the occurrence of modal periodicities of 6-month and 12-month observed across the six synoptic stations. The synoptic stations are Sokoto (13.01°N, 5.15°E), Ilorin (8.29°N, 4.35°E), Ikeja (6.35°N, 3.20°E), Enugu (6.28°N, 7.33°E), Port-Harcourt (4.51°N, 7.01°E) and Maiduguri (11.51°N, 13.05°E). Similarly, the trends of inter-decadal va-riability of minimum and maximum temperature show a non-uniformity increase over the analyzed period with a slight decrease before 1960. The long term behavior of minimum and maximum temperature shows a warming rate which ranges from 0.1°C/decade to 0.2°C/ decade across the six stations except for maximum temperature at Ilorin and minimum temperature at Sokoto which is at -0.2°C/decade and 0.3°C/decade respectively.

Cost recovery and user satisfaction are among the core objectives of any public or quas-public good *** toilet service provision has been the domain of local government until when liberalisation policies struck the developing *** stringent condition to reduce the fiscal burden,local government authorities have sought to offload some of its core functions including the management of public toilets to contracted *** on regression and comparative quadrant analysis,this study evaluates cost recovery and user satisfaction in relation to public toilet condition based on a total of 729 user responses and 31 public toilet *** observations point to misguided decision to place public toilet management under contracted firms instead of placing then under Public Private Partnership(PPP).The decision to place public toilets management under private contract or individual contract is only secondary to PPP if the focus is to achieve both cost recovery and user ***,if the focus was to achieve only cost recovery regardless of the need to protect users,then the decision would have been well founded but can be conspired inappropriate in as long as public toilets remain the domain of public good.

目的分析艾滋病病毒(HIV)感染者/艾滋病(AIDS)病人(简称HIV/AIDS病人)接受抗病毒治疗(ART)中出现脱失的原因,探讨降低脱失率的对策。方法对2006-2014年伊宁市国家艾滋病疫情报告系统抗病毒治疗数据库中,脱失的HIV/AIDS病人进行面对面或电话访谈,采用描述性分析方法进行分析。结果在861例脱失者中,失联231例,死亡65例,转外县市治疗65例,重复39例,坚决拒绝调查4例,最后457例脱失者参与问卷调查。被调查的457例中,40.0%的病例接受ART到脱失的时间≤3个月,76.8%的人出现了不同程度的药物不良反应。药物不良反应是144例(31.5%)首要的脱失原因,其余是工作原因64例(14.0%),害怕被人知道感染HIV44例(9.6%),觉得药物无效43例(9.4%),抗拒吃药40例(8.8%)。对抗病毒治疗看法,188例(41.1%)受访者认为能促进健康,延长生命,提升生活质量;160例(35.0%)受访者认为药物有很多不良反应,不愿治疗。参加抗病毒治疗的原因,222例(48.6%)认为工作人员多次劝导,不好意思拒绝;174例(38.1%)受访者认为促进健康,延长生命。服药依从性较差,近一半的受访者未按医嘱服药。结论建立药物不良反应的监测和告知机制,加强宣传教育,完善家庭与社会支持,优化用药方案,能提高病人的服药依从性,降低脱失率。
