Profile of the Functional Categories of Food Additives in Industrial Foods Marketed in Senegal

Food additives, whether natural or artificial substances, are widely used around the world to improve the sensory quality of products, extend their shelf life and make them more competitive. However, the abusive and uncontrolled consumption of food additives is the cause of numerous illnesses and diseases such as poisoning, allergies, diabetes and numerous cancers. So, in addition to setting up control and regulatory bodies, it is becoming essential to keep a constant watch on the presence of food additives on the market. The aim of this study is to highlight the main categories of food additives in food products frequently sold on the Senegalese market. The methodology of the study is based on the identification of food additives from the information given on the labels of food packaging. Information was collected in markets in two (2) major regions of Senegal: Dakar and Saint-Louis. The results of our study show the presence of 153 food additives on the labels of 514 samples collected. Moreover, the frequency and diversity of additives depended on the food category. On the other hand, beyond their important technological and functional roles, some additives such as aspartame and monosodium glutamate have been implicated in pathologies, and others, such as titanium dioxide, are the subject of much controversy and even withdrawal in certain legislations for their impacts deemed potentially negative on consumer health.

DEXA Contribution in Bone Densitometry Evaluation on Osteoporosis in Senegal: Results of a Study Realized in African Black Populations

Osteoporosis, a public health problem is able to occur severe fractures and its prevalence increases in developing countries. Several factors involved in its pathogenesis. These factors are: Heredity, elderly, race, ethnicity, hormones, physical inactivity, sunlight exposure, vitamin D deficiency and certain drugs. In Africa, few data are available and the disease prevalence is maybe underestimated. In Senegal, measure of bone mineral density is recent. In this study, our objective was to determine DEXA patients profile and epidemiological, clinical characteristics of patients for densitometry examination. Thus, 43 cases were collected;lumbar and femoral sites were evaluated. Median lumbar T-score was 0.91 and the femoral T-score was 0.16. Osteopenia was found in 35% of patients and osteoporosis in 26%. Bone Mineral Density was abnormal in 60% of cases. This study is another proof of documented reality of osteoporosis in Senegal. It determines frequency in a population at risk. For the future, it opens way for further larger studies to get better profile of the patients and prevalence osteoporosis in Senegal.

Metabolic Emergencies in Newborns in a Subsaharian Neonatology Department: Evaluation of Glucose, Sodium and Potassium Disorders

Introduction: Metabolic neonatal adaptation is a complex phenomenon and metabolic disorders can be frequent in immature newborns or in life-threatening situations. In Low and Middle income countries (LMIC) the difficult access to some diagnostic tests makes the management of the metabolic emergencies challenging. The main objectives of this study were to assess the frequency and circumstances of occurrence and to describe the clinical picture associated with glucose, sodium and potassium disorders in neonates. Patients and Methods: Our study was a retrospective and descriptive study conducted in the neonatology unit of National Children Hospital Albert Royer in Dakar (Senegal) from January 1 to December 31, 2014. Results: The prevalence of the studied metabolic disorders was 46.7%. The most common metabolic disorder noted was Hyperglycemia followed by Hyponatremia. Thermoregulation disturbances were found particularly in newborns with serum sodium disorders (hyponatremia 33.5% and hypernatremia 59.7%). Neurological signs were noted in case of blood sugar abnormalities (hypoglycemia 26.1% and hyperglycemia 29.8%). Half of the newborns with hyperglycemia (82 cases/50%) had blood sugar levels greater than or equal to 2 g/l. Hypernatremia was severe (Serum sodium> 180 mmol/l) in 12 neonates (16.7%). The main diagnoses retained were sepsis (159 cases/45.4%), prematurity (96 cases/27.4%), intrauterine growth retardation (66 cases/18.9%), malformations (63 cases/18%), perinatal asphyxia (44 cases/12.6%) and malnutrition (36 cases/10.3%). For most metabolic disorders, the correction was late and was done beyond 48 hours. On average, the correction time varied between 3 hours and 6 days. The most frequent complications were cerebral edema (12 cases), brain death (8 cases) and increased intracranial pressure (3 cases). The Use of Atypical Neuroleptics in Drugs Management in Fann’s Psychiatry Department

Background and Objectives: Neuroleptics have revolutionized pharmacological management in psychiatry. The advent of atypical neuroleptics constitutes a major turning point in this therapeutic challenge. The objective of our study was to determine the prescription of these atypical neuroleptics in Fann’s psychiatry department. Methodology: It was a descriptive retrospective cross-sectional study that involved 223 patients hospitalized in the psychiatry department of Fann Hospital during the period from January 2015 to December 2017. Results: Our study shows a majority prescription of classic neuroleptics in combination Haloperidol-Chlorpromazine 53% and 14% in monotherapy and a prescription of atypical neuroleptics at 4%. They are prescribed in combination with the classics at 4%. Conclusion: These results show a still low prescription of atypical neuroleptics which raises questions about the availability and affordability of such drugs, but also about prescription habits in the context of developing country.

Assessment of Radiofrequency in Otorhinolaryngology at the Military Hospital of Ouakam (MHO)

Introduction: Coblation® is a low temperature-controlled tissue ablation technique widely used in human surgery. Its development in otorhinolaryngology has allowed a spectacular advance in the management of diseases of the nasal and oral cavities. The objective of our work was to study the indications for radiofrequency in ENT, to describe the technical aspects and to evaluate the results of his practice at the HMO. Patients and Methods: This is a retrospective study carried out in the ENT and Head and Neck Surgery department of the Ouakam Military Hospital (MHO) over a period of 3 years (from January 2015 to the end of December 2017), involving 37 patients who received radiofrequency treatment in the ENT sphere. Results: The study was carried out on 37 patients. The sex ratio of 0.19. The mean age of the patients was 33.3 years. The indications were dominated by chronic caseous cryptic tonsillitis with or without halitosis with 24 cases (64.9%) followed by recurrent tonsillitis in 5 cases (13.5%) then we have obstructive hypertrophy of the palatal tonsils with syndrome sleep apnea (OSAS) in 4 cases (10.8%) followed by nasal obstruction (hypertrophy of the inferior turbinates) and hypertrophy of the soft palate and uvula in 2 cases (5.4%). The complication rate was 8.1% and dominated by transient dysgeusia in 1 case or 2.7%, uvula edema in 1 case or 2.7% and bleeding in 1 case or 2.7%. The postoperative follow-up was done one week, 1 month, 3 months, 6 months and 12 months after radiofrequency. Volumetric reduction begins to set in from 1 month (62.5%) and becomes maximum in 3 months (74.3%). Conclusion: Coblation® is a controlled tissue ablation technique at low temperature, patented by ArthroCare® Corporation in 1997. Very widespread in human surgery. This study aimed to evaluate the nutritional and sensory characteristics of penne-type pasta produced from locally sourced cereals, tubers, and legumes. To achieve this, we formulated four different types of pasta with varying levels of incorporation ranging from 10 to 50% cereals such as millet, fonio, and rice, tubers such as manioc and sweet potato, and legumes such as cowpea. The results showed that the incorporation of local products considerably improved the nutrient content of penne without being rejected by consumers. Sensory analysis showed that the best results were obtained with mixtures of sweet potato, cowpea, and wheat, as well as with rice, manioc, cowpea, and sample wheat. These results are of great importance to manufacturers in a world where developing nutritious and attractive food products is a crucial challenge.

Frailty in People Living with Human Immunodeficiency Virus Aged 50 years and Older: Prevalence and Predictors

Introduction: Life expectancy improvement for people living with Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) is coming up against the problems associated with aging and chronic diseases. Frailty is a concern affecting a growing number of patients, particularly the elderly in this population. Our study aimed to determine the prevalence of frailty and its predictors on people living with HIV aged 50 years and older followed at the Outpatient Treatment Clinic (CTA) in Dakar. Methodology: We conducted a cross-sectional study of descriptive and analytic purposes ranging from November 2022 to August 2023, in CTA, Dakar (Senegal). We included people living with HIV aged 50 years and older under antiretroviral therapy for at least 6 months (≥6 months). Frailty was considered according to Fried criteria with a score ≥3. To identify the predictors of frailty, we performed a multivariate logistic regression analysis using STATA software version 18. Results: We included 199 patients. The median age at the moment of the study was 58 years old [50 - 91] with a sex ratio (M/F) of 0.58. The most representative age group was that of [50 - 59] years (59.3%). HIV-1 profile was most common in 89.45%. The median duration under antiretroviral therapy was 180 months [6 - 284] and 94% of patients received a Tenofovir Disoproxil Fumarate (TDF)-containing regimen with 43% of them for at least 10 years. Viral load was undetectable (≤40 copies/ml) in 98% of cases. WHO Stage III was more common at inclusion and 55.78% had nadir TCD4+ Lymphocyte counts Conclusion: Our study confirms the high prevalence of frailty among older people living with HIV. Its prevention should consider the management of comorbidities and the implementation of non-pharmacological interventions such as nutrition.

ADEFGuard:Anomaly detection framework based on Ethereum smart contracts behaviours

Smart contracts are the building blocks of blockchain systems that enable automated peer-to-peer transactions and decentralized *** contracts certainly provide a powerful functional surplus for maintaining the consistency of transactions in applications governed by blockchain *** contracts have become lucrative and profitable targets for attackers because they can hold a large amount of *** verification and symbolic analysis have been employed to combat these destructive scams by analysing the codes and function calls,yet each scam's vulnerability should be discreetly *** this work,we introduce ADEFGuard,a new anomaly detection framework based on the behaviour of smart contracts,as a new *** design a learning and monitoring module to determine fraudulent smart contract *** framework is advantageous over basic algorithms in three ***,ADEFGuard provides a unified solution to different genres of scams,relieving the need for code analysis ***,ADEFGuard's inference is orders of magnitude faster than code ***,the experimental results show that ADEFGuard achieves high accuracy(85%),precision(75%),and recall(90%)for malicious contracts and is potentially useful in detecting new malicious behaviours of smart contracts.

Assessment of Some Secondary Metabolites, Minerals and Alcohol Content of Noni Juice Obtained by Fermentation of Morinda citrifolia L. Fruit from Senegal

The fruit of Morinda citrifolia L., commonly known as noni, has an extensive history of use as a food and traditional medicine around the world. Adding value to Morinda citrifolia L. products, particularly the fruit, could be one way of building resilience in vulnerable farming households. The aim of this study was to determine the secondary metabolite and mineral composition of noni juice obtained by fermenting the fruit of Morinda citrifolia L. Fruits were collected in August 2022 from the local field in Thiès region, West of Senegal. Extraction yields were determined and the secondary metabolites were determined using conventional analytical methods. Calcium, magnesium, iron, sodium and potassium were determined by atomic absorption spectrophotometer coupled with a CCD detector. The results show that an average fruit mass (503.2 ± 110.96 g) consists of 171.44 ± 50.01 g pulp and 34.06 ± 10.35 g seeds. The traditional extraction yield of noni juice is 16.46% after three weeks of fermentation. The contents of total polyphenols, flavonoids and tannins obtained in noni are 608.97 ± 4.53 mg EAG/100mL, 7.78 ± 0.01 mg EQ/100mL and 0.191 ± 0.01 mg EC/100mL respectively. The ethanol content of noni varies from 3.57 to 5.23 mL/100mL during extraction. Noni has a high calcium content with a concentration of 383.79 ± 33.23 mg/L. This is followed by a good concentration of magnesium, potassium and sodium, at 278.47 ± 26.30, 187.43 ± 10.7 and 155.95 ± 28.66 mg/L respectively. Noni also has an iron content of 202.15 ± 0.05 mg/L.
