Mortality and Morbidity among COVID-19-Associated Mucormycosis Patients in Iran: A Prospective Cohort Study

Background: The key contribution of this paper is from investigating the mortality and morbidity rates and related factors associated with COVID-19-associated-mucormycosis among Iranian patients. The existing literature is scarce on this topic, particularly in the context of Iran. The present study investigates mortality and morbidity among 62 confirmed COVID-19-associated-mucormycosis Iranian patients in relation to their demographic characteristics, laboratory test results, predisposing factors, and COVID-related factors. Material and Methods: In this prospective cohort study, the patients were identified in the fifth wave of the disease, between 1st August and 15th October 2021, with data collected at baseline with a three-week follow-up. This was a multicenter investigation with patients admitted to two clinics in Iran. 62 participants were admitted, with the key criteria of them being COVID-19-associated-mucormycosis patients. 53 out of 60 patients underwent corticosteroid therapy and debridement surgery. Intravenous remdesivir (200 mg/ kg/day at day 1, 100 mg/kg/day in following days for up to 5 days) and corticosteroids were administered for 53 out 54 patients. Oxygen therapy was only needed for 30% (n = 19) of the patients. Results: A 40% mortality rate was observed within the three-week follow-up, with deaths concentrated among those with controlled diabetes mellitus (61%) and long-term diabetes mellitus patients (an average of eight versus four years). Higher mortality was also observed in patients with higher leucocytes and those with rhino-orbital-cerebral (59%), followed by nasal (55.6%) mucormycosis. Among survivors, 32% were reinfected, and 56% suffered from loss of vision. Conclusion: The study concludes that mucormycosis is associated with a higher mortality rate among COVID-19 patients with diabetes mellitus, particularly corticosteroid recipients. Thus, urgent attention to this coinfection is warranted in Iran.

Study on Saravan Fault Activities on the Basis of Earthquake and Morphotectonics Evidences

Saravan Fault is the biggest fault in southeast of Iran. It is Right-Slip fault. It has been extended from northwest to southeast. It is important to evaluate tectonic activities along this fault because it is adjacent to the city and various villages. It’s found that there are various tectonic activities along this fault. In this paper, it has been studied on affecting this fault on geomorphology of the zone. Average values of some indices such as Mountain Font Sinuosity and V ratio have been studied that they are 1.76 and 0.77, respectively. It suggests that there are serious tectonic activities in the zone. There are some evidences such as Right-Slip fault along artificial river channel that indicates its youngest stage means Late Cenozoic. According to studies, Saravan Fault is more active in the middle zone than northwest and southeast ends.

Tectonics and Mineralisation of Copper in the Ardestan-Kahang Area, Central Iran by Remote Sensing

The Ardestan-Kahang area is located in Urmieh-Dokhtar Magmatic Arc. This area is situated in Ardestan, Kouhpayeh, Kajan and Zefreh in 1:100,000 geological maps. In order to extract mineralization zones related to copper mineralization and accessories elements, and also identify Argillic, Prophylitic, Sericitic and Siliceous alteration with major and minor lineaments, various kinds of algorithms, band ratio and personal interpolation have been utilized. The applied methods for extracting alteration consist of LS-Fit (Least Square Fit), Matched Filtering (MF), Spectral Angle Mapper (SAM) and Spectral Feature Fitting (SFF), band ratio and visual interpretation. Comparing different outputs of utilized algorithms illustrates that the best algorithm for argillc alteration extraction are Matched Filtering (MF) and Spectral Feature Fitting (SFF), with visual interpretation, and for argillic alterations the visual interpretation with RGB: 468 that has seen pink-red color. For prophylitic alterations the utilized algorithms are Matched Filtering (MF). Lineaments have extracted with visual interpretation on satellite images and it is revealed that in areas where the fracture density is greater, conditions are more suitable for copper mineralization.

Wave Spectral Patterns during a Historical Cyclone: A Numerical Model for Cyclone Gonu in the Northern Oman Sea

The third generation wind-wave model Mike21-SW was used to study spectral characteristics of waves generated by the historical Cyclone Gonu in June 2007 along and off the Iranian coasts on the northern Oman Sea. The model was forced with the cyclone wind field generated using a Holland (1980) model based on cyclone data obtained from the Joint Typhon Warning Center (JTWC). The wave model was calibrated for the northern Oman Sea using bulk and spectral wave data at a station out of the Chabahar Bay. Evolution of directional-frequency spectra during the cyclone was investigated for two locations near the entrance and off the Chabahar Bay. At the offshore station, energy was contributed to the spectrum over an approximately 180 degree directional span that included different local and remotely generated waves. As the cyclone proceeded northwestward, all spectral directions continuously rotated in the clockwise direction at both locations. Frequency spectra at these locations were investigated for four different times corresponding to different locations of Cyclone’s eye and were justified using the sea growth parameter of the Joint North Sea Wave Project (JONSWAP) experiment. Using the modified JONSWAP parameters for hurricane conditions resulted in a frequency spectrum consistent with simulation results.

Numerical Modeling of Explosive Loading on Strong Rock Mass with Discontinuity System in Depth 25 m

Effect of Explosion on underground structures where drilled on the stony materials can be affected by explosive strength and rock mass properties of tunnel. In this paper, it has been studied on effect of explosion of 10 tons TNT on the round tunnel (diameter: 10 m) in 25 m depth in the mass rocks (RMR > 90) to estimate stability of tunnel to construct underground structure. Regarding to the studied stones, geo-mechanical indices of rock mass have been found to use as strength criteria in UDEC. In the next step, tunnel in real dimensions and founded indices is modeled with UDEC and analyzed stably. Explosion wave indices are found by UFC Instruction and other experimental relations to administer force from explosion wave on the model. Finally, on the base of FISH, indices of explosion wave are administrated in UDEC and tunnel is analyzed dynamically. According to modeling in depth of 25 m, amount of displacement of drilled tunnel in mass rocks (RMR < 90) is very lower than standard criterion and the tunnel is very stable. Development of plastic zone, vertical and horizontal displacement of rock mass around the tunnel, speed variations and stress from explosion wave are modeled and recorded as the graphs and figures.

Pseudoxanthoma elasticum (PXE) is a hereditary disorder that affects primarily the elastic tissues of skin, eyes and blood vessels. Its estimated prevalence is thought to be 1:25,000 - 100,000. PXE patients also carry an increased risk for cardiovascular and gastrointestinal diseases. Early diagnosis can play a crucial role in preventing early loss of vision and systemic complications in these patients however despite having characteristic clinical features;it is still to a large extent being under-diagnosed. Here we present two cases of PXE with reduced vision.

应用23个形态学特征,19个扩增片段长度多态性(AFLP)引物组合,80个随机扩增多态DNA (RAPD)引物和32个简单序列重复(SSR)引物对,比较三种分子标记法在29个杏仁栽培种和3个野生种遗传关系构建中的信息量和效率。根据预期杂合度的评价,与AFLPs和RAPDs相比,SSRs具有较高水平的多态性和较大的信息量。AFLPs预期杂合度值最低,但其辨别效率值最高,因为AFLPs能揭示每个反应中的大量条带,导致各种类型的多样性指数均较高。三种分子标记法对杏仁基因型的辨别效率均较高,只是SSRs无法辨别‘Monagha’和‘Sefied’杏仁基因型。三种分子标记法基因型相似性相关系数统计上显著,但SSR数据要低于RAPDs和AFLPs的值。尽管三种分子标记法树形图拓扑结构存在一些差异,但相似性水平均较高。SSRs、 RAPDs和AFLPs的系统树图及其综合数据都能依据地理散布反映大多数栽培种的关系。AMOVA检测到每个地理组中栽培种和野生种的变异。辅助程序分析表明,实验所应用的标记物数量足以保证基因相似性估计的可靠性和标记法间的比较是有意义的。
