Chikungunya fever(CF)is caused by an arbovirus whose manifestations are extremely diverse,and it has evolved with significant severity in recent *** clinical signs triggered by the Chikungunya virus are similar to those of other ***,fever starts abruptly and reaches high levels,followed by severe polyarthralgia and myalgia,as well as an erythematous or petechial maculopapular rash,varying in severity and *** 40%to 60%of affected individuals report persistent arthralgia,which can last from months to *** symptoms of CF mainly represent the tissue tropism of the virus rather than the immunopathogenesis triggered by the host's immune *** main mechanisms associated with arthralgia have been linked to an increase in T helper type 17 cells and a consequent increase in receptor activator of nuclear factor kappa-Βligand and bone *** review suggests that persistent arthralgia results from the presence of viral antigens post-infection and the constant activation of signaling lymphocytic activation molecule family member 7 in synovial macrophages,leading to local infiltration of CD4+T cells,which sustains the inflammatory process in the joints through the secretion of pro-inflammatory *** term"long chikungunya"was used in this review to refer to persistent arthralgia since,due to its manifestation over long periods after the end of the viral infection,this clinical condition seems to be characterized more as a sequel than as a symptom,given that there is no active infection involved.

Statistical Analysis of Precipitation Extremes in São Francisco River Basin, Brazil

This study comprises a climatology of the spatial variability of precipitation over the São Francisco River Basin (SFRB), characterized by its geographic heterogeneity. The different rainfall regimes in the region were analyzed through statistical and spectral analyses. Measured precipitation data, Pacific Decennial Climate indexes, ENSO, Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation, North Atlantic Oscillation, Atlantic dipole, and the sunspot cycle over 65 years were used. The rainfall data were filtered and filled in using the regional weighting method. The spatial and temporal variability of precipitation along the SFRB is remarkable. A pattern was observed along with the time series of precipitation over the SFRB. The cluster analysis identified four homogeneous regions in the SFRB and explained 87.4% of the total variance of the average monthly rainfall of the 199 rain gauges. The Cross-wavelet analysis identified the relationship between the precipitation data series and the climatic indexes that are analyzed in this work.

Bredemeyera floribunda Wild (Polygalaceae), also known as pau-de-ovo is a medicinal plant used to treat snakebites, as tonic and fortifiers to treat fatigue and exhaustion. The aim of the present study was to document the knowledge of herbal sellers in the preparation of the so-called “B. floribunda fortifier” and to compare the plant root content with the recommended nutritional values and the permitted limit for medicinal plants. The study revealed that, unlike other regions of Brazil, in the Midwest region, the root of the plant is used as food to treat fatigue and exhaustion. The contents in B. floribunda root decreased in the following order: Ca > K > P > Na > Fe > Mg > Si > Mn > Zn > Cu. Daily intake of 30 grams of B. floribunda roots are considered as an excellent source of Cr, Cu, Mn and Se for people 19 to 50 years of age according to the RDA. In addition, Cu and Fe showed content above the established limit for medicinal plants stipulated by other countries. The root of the plant has low K, Mg, P, Na and Zn content. When the contents in roots of the plant are below the oral dose of reference, consumption of this plant can be considered safe and without risk to human health. On the other hand, concentration of elements such as Cu, Fe, Ni, Al, Cr and Se exceeding the allowable limit may cause serious health problems due to prolonged ingestion and large amounts consumed daily. The Brazilian legislation does not establish a permissible limit of macro- and micro-elements in medicinal plants;thus, the results presented in this study will contribute to the Brazilian public health policy on medicinal plants.

Oxidation of lipids in various products,along with the growth of medically important pathogens,has led to a search for medicinal plants with antioxidant and antimicrobial *** a result,the aim of this study was to evaluate the antioxidant and antibacterial activity of the essential oil of Eucalyptus globulus(EO-Eg).Antioxidant activity was assessed by using the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl hydrate(DPPH)assay *** components were identified through gas chromatography-mass spectrometry(GC-MS)*** activity and minimum inhibitory concentration(MIC)were assessed by using the broth microdilution method with standard multidrug-resistant bacterial *** main EO-Eg compounds identified by GC-MS were isopulegol,citronellal,and citronellol,which are primarily used in the industrial ***-Eg demonstrated excellent antioxidant activity with an effective concentration(EC50)of 4.48μL/mL owing to the presence of phenolic *** antibacterial activity,the EO-Eg displayed a broad antimicrobial spectrum of antimicrobial activity across the different resistance phenotypes *** most notable antibacterial activity was observed against Staphylococcus aureus 169 MRSA(MIC=0.0625%).As a result,our findings suggest that EO-Eg has antioxidant and antibacterial potential against hospital-acquired multidrug-resistant pathogens,which may be correlated with its major components.
