Public knowledge,practices and perceptions on typhus fevers in Southern Sri Lanka

Objective:To assess public knowledge,practices and perceptions on typhus fevers in Sri ***:A descriptive study was done in four selected typhus-prone areas in Southern Sri Lanka.A mixed-method was employed using face-to-face interviews and questionnaire-based surveys among confirmed cases of typhus and at-risk populations,***,percentages,and means were used to characterize socio-demography and evaluate disease ***:The lay terms for typhus fevers reported in the studied region were“peacock fever”,“tick fever”and“bird fever”.A total of 499 subjects participated[mean±SD,(45±16)years]in the questionnaire-based survey,and 13.6%(n=68)reported past experience of typhus fever,1.2%(n=6)identified the disease as“typhus”while 58.7%(n=293)and 11.8%(n=59)knew it as‘peacock fever’and‘tick fever’,*** etiological agent was unknown to 95.2%(n=475),but 53.5%(n=267)were aware that it was ***(57.3%,n=286),eschar(35.7%,n=178),headache(22.0%,n=267)and myalgia(19.2%,n=96)were identified as key *** disease experience was significantly associated with higher awareness of the main disease symptoms(fever:χ^(2)=15.713,Pnopathy:Fisher’s exact test,P=0.023;eschar:χ^(2)=12.049,Pnone knew of any disease prevention *** with a past history of typhus fever had sought treatment at state hospitals(55.9%,38/68)and private sector hospitals(5.9%,4/68).Conclusions:Public awareness on preventive practices for typhus fevers was rare among the participants though vector-borne aspect was known to *** disease awareness was deficient among those without past experience of typhus *** sensitization on vector avoidance strategies is highly recommended.

ni?Co3O4 composite coatings were electrodeposited on mild steel surface from a Watts-type bath in the presence of sodium lauryl sulfate(SLS).The dispersed Co3O4 particles in the presence of SLS have a greater tendency to move towards cathode and get incorporated in the *** modifies chemical composition,surface morphology and microstructure of the ni?Co3O4 composite *** developed composite coating exhibits higher corrosion resistance and microhardness than the pure nickel *** loadings of bath solution with different concentrations of Co3O4 particles in the presence of SLS provide hydrophobic nature to the coating surface,which is much effective in enhancing the corrosion resistance of ni?Co3O4 composite *** agglomeration of Co3O4 particles(>3 g/L)under high bath load condition develops defects and dislocation on the coating surface,which results in lower corrosion resistance of the *** mechanical properties of the hydrophobic coatings were assessed by the linear abrasion test.

Temperature Effects on Gas Sensing Properties of Electrodeposited Chlorine Doped and Undoped n-Type Cuprous Oxide Thin Films

As one of the most widely used domestic fuels, the detection of possible leakages of Liquefied Petroleum (LP) gas from production plants, from cylinders during their storage, transport and usage is of utmost importance. This article discusses a study of the response of undoped and chlorine doped electrodeposited n-type Cuprous Oxide (Cu2O) films to of LP gas. Undoped n-type Cu2O films were fabricated in an electrolyte bath containing a solution of sodium acetate and cupric acetate whereas n-type chlorine doped Cu2O thin films were prepared by adding a 0.02 M cuprous chloride (CuCl2) into an electrolyte solution containing lactic acid, cupric sulfate and sodium hydroxide. The n-type conductivity of the deposited films was determined using spectral response measurements. The structural and morphological properties of the fabricated films were monitored using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). Due to doping, the overall conductivity of the chlorine doped n-type Cu2O films increased by several orders of magnitude. The temperature dependent gas responses of both the undoped and chlorine doped n-type Cu2O thin films to the LP gas was monitored by measuring the electrical resistance (R), and using the contact probe method at a constant gas flow rate of 0.005 ml/s. Upon exposure to gases, both doped and undoped films showed a good response to the gas by increasing/decreasing the electrical resistance by ΔR. The undoped n-type Cu2O thin films showed a negative response (ΔR 2O thin films initially showed a positive response (ΔR > 0) to the LP gas which then reversed its sign to give a negative response which peaked at 52°C. The positive response shown by the chlorine doped Cu2O films vanished completely at 42°C.

Early Infant Diagnosis (EID) of HIV: An Experience at a Tertiary Care Hospital in India

Introduction: Early infant diagnosis (EID) confers substantial benefit to HIV infected and HIV uninfected infants and to programmes providing prevention of mother to child transmission (MTCT), but has been challenging to implement in resource limited settings. Objectives: To find out the rate of perinatal transmission in infants born to HIV positive mothers, to study the effect of various predisposing factors on HIV transmission and to evaluate the utility of dried blood spot (DBS) specimen for EID of HIV. Methods: Infants born to HIV positive mothers were tested according to national AIDS Control Organization (nACO) guidelines. Infants of 6 weeks to 6 months of age (n = 84) were diagnosed by DBS PCR;DBS positive results were confirmed by whole blood PCR. Infants 6 - 18 months (n = 47) were subjected to antibody test and if positive were confirmed by DnA PCR. Detailed history including type of delivery, single dose nevirapine (SDn) and breast feeding was taken. Results: The HIV transmission rate was 10.69%. In children ≤ 6 months, who did not receive SDn the positivity was 44.44% (4/9) whereas in those who received SDn it was 6.66% (5/75), (P = 0.0063). In children > 6 months the positivity rate was significantly higher in breast fed 42.85% (3/7) as compared to non breast fed 5% (2/40) children (P = 0.0187). There was 100% concordance between DBS and whole blood PCR. Conclusions: In resource limited settings, though HAART should be considered to further reduce MTCT during pregnancy and to prevent the emergence of resistance, SDn should be kept as an option for mothers coming directly in labour. Also, extended ART should be provided to mothers who want to breast feed their children. Early infant diagnosis using DBS specimens will further reduce the morbidity and mortality in these children.

Endoscopy has important roles in the management of primary sclerosing cholangitis(PSC),ranging fromnarrowing down the differential diagnoses,screening for complications,determining prognosis and *** the need for a diagnostic endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography(ERCP)may be obviated by a positive magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography(MRCP),a negative MRCP does not exclude PSC and may therefore necessitate an ERCP,which is traditionally regarded as the gold *** this editorial we have not covered the endoscopic management of inflammatory bowel disease in the context of PSC nor of endoscopic surveil ance and treatment of portal hypertension complicating PSC.
