Objective: To investigate the r.lationship between hepatitis B vir.s(HBV) positivity and pr.gnancy outcomes. Also, the association between HBV-r.lated r.sk factor. and HBV status was ***: A total of 100 HBV positive pr.gnant women wer. r.cr.ited and the pr.gnancy outcomes wer. compar.d with 301 HBV negative women. Blood samples wer. collected and tested for.HBV by HBs Ag ELISA. Data wer. collected for.r.cr.ited subjects using inter.iew ***: Data analysis showed that 51/100(51%) of the HBV-positive subjects gave a histor. of HBV in the family which was significantly higher.than that of HBV-negative patients [41/301(13.6%) P = 0.001]. A significant association was found between positive histor. of sur.er. and HBs Ag positivity(P = 0.009). Then, pr.gnancy outcomes wer. str.tified accor.ing to the HBV positivity. No significant association was found between HBV status and pr.gnancy outcomes(P > 0.05 for.all).Conclusions: Positive family histor. of HBV and pr.vious sur.ical pr.cedur.s ar. associated with higher.r.te of HBV positivity. No association is found between HBV positivity and pr.gnancy outcomes.

Helicobacter.pylor. and gastr.c cancer.in the Middle East: A new enigma?

The Middle East is the home of ethnic gr.ups fr.m thr.e main backgr.unds: Semitic (Ar.bs and Jews), Indo-Eur.pean (Per.ians and Kur.ish) and Tur.ic (Tur.ish and Tur.mens). Its geogr.phic location, which has been under.continuous influences fr.m Asia, Eur.pe and Afr.ca, has made it an ideal site for.epidemiological studies on Helicobacter.pylor. (H. pylor.) infection and genotyping. The gastr.c cancer.r.te differ. in this r.gion fr.m ver. high in Ir.n (26.1/105) to low in Isr.el (12.5/105) and ver. low in Egypt (3.4/105). Epidemiological studies showed that the pr.valence of H. pylor. is almost similar.in those countr.es with a high level of infection in childhood. Impor.antly, the fr.quency of vacA s1 and m1 r.gions and cagA+ genotypes wer. higher.in non Semitic populations who inhabit the Nor.h than Semitic populations, the inhabitants of Souther. par.s of the Middle East. H. pylor. infection pr.valence, distr.bution patter. of vir.lence factor., diet and smoking could not have explained the differ.nce in cancer.r.te. This r.flects the multifactor.al aetiology of gastr.c cancer.and suggests that H. pylor. infection does not always dir.ctly cor.elate with the r.sk for.gastr.intestinal disease, such as gastr.c cancer. Fur.her.detailed investigations and inter.ational compar.tive studies of each r.sk factor.needto be per.or.ed to investigate whether.this r.pr.sents a tr.e enigma.

Objective: To investigate the pr.valence of hepatitis C vir.s(HCV) and its genotypes in Duhok City, Kur.istan r.gion, ***: A cr.ss sectional study was conducted to investigate the pr.valence of HCV and its genotype. A total of 2 109 subjects, who attended the hospital for.complaints other.than hepatitis, wer. r.cr.ited in this ***: Fir.t, anti-HCV antibody positivity was examined by ELISA. About 5.2%(111/2 109) of our.samples wer. tested positive for.anti-HCV antibodies. To confir. the positivity, r.-PCr.was per.or.ed. Amongst all samples, 2.8%(60/2 109) was positive by r.-PCr. Then, we genotyped all the r.-PCr.positive samples, and it was found that50.0%(30/60) of our.samples wer. typed as HCV genotype 4, 43.3%(26/60) as genotype1 and 6.7%(4/60) as genotype ***: The pr.valence of HCV was higher.than that was r.por.ed pr.viously and genotype 4 was the most pr.valent. Fur.her.population based study is r.quir.d to investigate the pr.valence of HCV.
