Assessment of seismic retrofitting interventions in reinforced concrete structures

Destruction of reinforced concrete(RC)structures,particularly non-ductile RC structures,in recent earthquakes demonstrate their vulnerability under lateral forces generated in an *** the extensive literature on the subject and the wide variety of strengthening techniques available,there is no consensus on the efficiency of these techniques in improving the seismic performance of RC *** this study,a five-storeyed RCframed building is considered to evaluate its seismic performance through static non-linear pushover *** examine the effect of various cases encountered in practice,the pushover analysis is carried out on the RC frame for various cases,i.e.a bare RC frame,an RC frame with masonry infills but with an open ground storey,and RC frames with shear walls with a variety of thicknesses and steel reinforcement ***,to investigate the effect of retrofitting,the RC frame is strengthened using local jacketing and *** the results,it is observed that the initial stiffness and base shear of masonry infilled RC frame with an open ground storey exhibit an increase of 2.6%,and 19%,respectively,as compared to the bare *** use of shear walls increases the initial stiffness and base shears,and they increase by 6–14%and 8–20%,respectively,with an increase in the reinforcement ratio in the shear *** with the use of both diagonal bracings causes the base shear to increase by a factor of 7.7 as compared to that of the open ground ***,the probability of damage to the RC frame in all cases was compared using seismic fragility curves.

Effect of Treatment for CHC on Liver Disease Progression and Hepatocellular Carcinoma Development in African Americans

Background and Aims:African Americans (AA) historically have a low response rate to hepatitis C therapies,and there is limited information available for this patient population regarding the development and treatment of chronic hepatitis C (CHC).The aim of this study was to evaluate liver disease progression and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) development in AA with ***:Between 1995 and 2008,246 AA patients with CHC were identified from a database of patients and followed until 2012-2013 (average 8 years)or the development of HCC after ***:Viral clearance (intent to treat;sustained virus response (SVR)) was achieved in 15% of patients with interferon based therapies with or without *** patients who achieved an SVR (n=22) did not develop HCC or new onset cirrhosis,whereas the HCC incidence in untreated AA patients was 23% (51/203).Patients who achieved an SVR also had improved fibrosis,as defined by the AST Platelet Ratio Index (APRI) and Fibrosis-4 (FIB-4) score,relative to nonresponders and untreated ***:The severity of liver disease at the first visit (except for cirrhosis) correlated with the development of HCC,but because of the overlap in values between patients,these measurements were not useful for predicting individual *** cirrhosis at the first visit was not a predictive factor,treatment with newer antiviral therapies is the best option for reducing the incidence of advanced liver disease and its harmful outcomes in the AA population.

A Study of Physico-Chemical Parameters of Newaj River Water in Rajgarh District, Madhya Pradesh

Present paper deals with the study of some physico-chemical parameters in Newaj River Water in Rajgarh District, Madhya Pradesh in the month of November and December *** parameters like temperature, pH, electrical conductivity, turbidity, total hardness, Ca- hardness, Mg-hardness and chloride were determined. The results were compared with standards of IS： 10500 and WHO. From the results it was found that the most of the parameters of Newaj River water were within the permissible limit.

Use of tricortical iliac crest strut autograft in comminuted posterior wall acetabular fractures： A case series

Purpose： The results for fixation of comminuted posterior wall acetabular fractures are not very promising with reported complications in terms of osteoarthritis, nonunion and malunion which subsequently require conversion to total hip arthroplasty. The conversion to total hip arthroplasty is possible in patients over 50 years of age but not in younger patients. So this requires new methods for salvage of the native hip in young patients. Methods： There were six patients in our series with highly comminuted posterior wall acetabular frac- tures where the fragments were excised and the gap filled with tricortical anterior iliac-crest strut autograff, fixed with screws and plate. Results： Good results were achieved in four out of six patients analyzed clinically using the Merle d＇Aubinge score modified by Matta and radiologically by Matta scoring. These patients have returned to original work and are walking independently. The good result in one patient deteriorated from good to poor between one and two years. One patient developed infection and excision arthroplasty was done, The graft incorporated well in five out of six patients. Conclusion： The use of iliac crest autograff is a better, advanced and promising technique as it provides a new wall to the weight bearing dome of the acetabulum for articulation with the femoral head. The rates of nonunion, malunion, post traumatic osteoarthritis are less as compared to the fixation of the comminuted fragments. The need for conversion to total hio arthroolastv is also less.

Surface-enhanced Raman scattering nanosensors for in vivo detection of nucleic acid targets in a large animal model

Although nanotechnology has led to important advances in in vitro diagnostics, the development of nanosensors for in vivo detection remains very challenging. Here, we demonstrated the proof-of-principle of in vivo detection of nudeic acid targets using a promising type of surface-enhanced Raman scattering （SERS） nanosensor implanted in the skin of a large animal model （pig）. The in vivo nanosensor used in this study involves the ＂inverse molecular sentinel＂ detection scheme using plasmonics-active nanostars, which have tunable absorption bands in the near infrared region of the ＂tissue optical window＂, rendering them efficient as an optical sensing platform for in vivo optical detection. Ex vivo measurements were also performed using human skin grafts to demonstrate the detection of SERS nanosensors through tissue. In this stud, a new core--shell nanorattle probe with Raman reporters trapped between the core and shell was utilized as an internal standard system for self-calibration. These results illustrate the usefulness and translational potential of the SERS nanosensor for in vivo biosensing.

Selective separation, detection of zotepine and mass spectral characterization of degradants by LC–MS/MS/QTOF

A simple, precise, accurate stability-indicating gradient reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatographic （RP-HPLC） method was developed for the quantitative determination of zotepine （ZTP） in bulk and pharmaceutical dosage forms in the presence of its degradation products （DPs）. The method was developed using Phenomenex C18 column （250 mm ~ 4.6 mm i.d., 5 mm） with a mobile phase containing a gradient mixture of solvents, A （0.05%trifluoroacetic acid （TFA）, pH ？ 3.0） and B （acetonitrile）. The eluted compounds were monitored at 254 nm;the run time was within 20.0 min, in which ZTP and its DPs were well separated, with a resolution of 41.5. The stress testing of ZTP was carried out under acidic, alkaline, neutral hydrolysis, oxidative, photolytic and thermal stress conditions. ZTP was found to degrade significantly in acidic, photolytic, thermal and oxidative stress conditions and remain stable in basic and neutral conditions. The developed method was validated with respect to specificity, linearity, limit of detection, limit of quantification, accuracy, precision and robustness as per ICH guidelines. This method was also suitable for the assay determination of ZTP in pharmaceutical dosage forms. The DPs were characterized by LC-MS/MS and their fragmentation pathways were proposed.

Effect of anaesthesia on the perioperative outcomes of pelvi-acetabular fracture surgeries in the apex trauma centre of a developing country–a retrospective analysis

Background:Regional anaesthesia has been proposed to reduce intraoperative blood loss,duration of hospital stay and in-hospital complications with improved postoperative pain *** anaesthesia is advantageous for prolonged *** hypothesized that combined regional and general anaesthesia would offer advantages of both in pelvi-acetabular fracture ***:We identified 71 patients who underwent open reduction and internal fixation of pelvi-acetabular fractures from May 2012 to 2013 in our trauma *** excluded patients with incomplete records(n=4)and other injuries operated along(n=8).Hence,59 patients were divided into three groups:G group(general anaesthesia),R group(regional anaesthesia)and GR group(combined regional and general anaesthesia).Main outcome measurements studied were intraoperative blood loss,duration of hospital stay,duration of surgery and intraoperative and postoperative ***:No differences were obtained in between the groups in terms of age,gender,Injury Severity Score,number of comorbidities,or duration from injury to *** significant differences were found between the three groups for intraoperative blood loss,days of hospital stay and duration of *** and postoperative complications were also comparable between the groups(p>0.05).Conclusions:There is no specific significant advantage of the technique of anaesthesia on the observed perioperative complications in pelvi-acetabular fracture surgeries.
