A Note on the Effect of Negative Poisson’s Ratio on the Deformation of a Poroelastic Half-Space by Surface Loads

The aim of this note is to study the effect of negative Poisson’s ratio on the quasi-static deformation of a poroelastic half-space with anisotropic permeability and compressible fluid and solid constituents by surface loads. Two particular cases considered are: two-dimensional normal strip loading and axisymmetric normal disc loading. It is found that a negative Poisson’s ratio makes the Mandel-Cryer effect more prominent. It also results in an increase in the magnitude of the surface settlement.

Intra-Scrotal Extra-Testicular Leiomyoma, a Common Mesenchymal Tumor at a Rare Site: Emphasizing the Need for Awareness of Its Occurrence

Leiomyoma is a benign tumor of smooth muscles. Leiomyoma originating from the scrotum is a rare entity. We report a case of 53-year-old African male who presented with a 3 cm lump in the right side of scrotum. Clinically, it was provisionally diagnosed as sebaceous cyst and was excised. The histopathology showed a leiomyoma. There was no cytological atypia or mitosis. The patient also had squamous papilloma over left gluteal region.

Effect of magnetic field on the fermentation kinetics of <i>Saccharomyces cerevisiae</i>

Published literature has shown conflicting results regarding the effects of magnetic fields on the fermentation kinetics or cellular growth of various Saccharomyces cerevisiae strains. Here, two sets of experiments were conducted to characterize the role of magnetic fields on cell growth and ethanol production during fermentation. The first experiment was completed for 25 h at a 2% dextrose loading rate under influence of homogeneous and non-homogeneous static magnetic fields on the order of 100 and 200 mT, respectively. The second experiment was completed for 30 h at a 6% dextrose loading rate under the influence of a non-homogeneous static magnetic field on the order of 200 mT. It was found that homogeneous magnetic fields have no significant effect on the yeast cell growth, while non-homogeneous static magnetic fields produced an increase (~ 8% over the control) in peak ethanol concentration with 2% dextrose loading.

Tumor growth rates and recurrence-free survival in chronic viral hepatitis patients with hepatocellular carcinoma

Aim:Survival in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC)is impacted by stage of liver disease,tumor characteristics,and HCC surveillance in high-risk *** associated with HCC tumor growth rate(TGR)and its influence on recurrence-free survival after treatment was ***:TGR was calculated in 164 HCC patients with chronic viral hepatitis who had two consecutive magnetic resonance imaging or computed tomography scans≥30 days apart prior to treatment and who were followed prospectively to determine the rates of recurrence-free ***:The median TGR in 164 patients was 17.8%per month(mean 33.3%per month).Regression tree analysis indicated that the top three predictors of TGR were alpha-fetoprotein(AFP)levels(≥16.7 ng/mL),platelet counts(≥140,000 mm3),and serum albumin level(56 years(HR=1.08,P=0.072),hepatitis C virus(HR=1.44,P=0.091),macrovascular invasion(HR=1.94,P=0.092),and the most definitive treatments(orthotopic liver transplantation,HR 0.14,P<0.001;surgical resection,HR=0.54,P=0.072;radiofrequency ablation,HR=0.58,P=0.060)as independent predictors of recurrence-free *** all treatment modalities,slow ;TGR was significant for prolonged survival(P=0.029).The poorest survival rates were observed in patients with fast TGRs treated by transarterial ***:The TGR correlated with AFP,platelet count,and albumin *** with fast TGRs had shorter recurrence-free survival after HCC *** is a potential imaging biomarker to predict clinical outcomes in HCC.

Evaluation of Activation Energy and Thermodynamic Properties of Enzyme-Catalysed Transesterification Reactions

In this study, the activation energy and thermodynamic properties of immobilized enzyme catalysed transesterification reactions were evaluated based on the enzyme substrate transition theory. The activation energy for a enzyme catalysed biodiesel production system were found to be 4.25 (kcal/mole) for monoglyceride formation, 5.58(kcal/mole) for diglyceride formation and 5.50 (kcal/mole) for methyl ester formation respectively. The rate constants were found to be 3.2 × 1010(L/***) monoglyceride, 3.47 × 109 (L/***) for diglyceride and 3.93 × 109 (L/***) for methyl ester. Based on the present work and published literatures, the activation energy of enzyme-catalysed transesterification reactions were found to be lower than the chemical-catalysed and non-catalyzed transesterification reactions. The thermodynamic properties of immobilized enzyme-catalysed transesterification reaction were found to be Gibbs free energy (ΔG = –1.02 kcal/mol), enthalpy (ΔH = 544 cal/mol) and entropy (ΔS = 5.19 cal/Kmol).

Genetic gains with genomic versus phenotypic selection for drought and waterlogging tolerance in tropical maize(Zea mays L.)

Erratic rainfall often results in intermittent drought and/or waterlogging and limits maize(Zea mays L.)productivity in many parts of the Asian *** climate-resilient maize germplasm possessing tolerance to these key abiotic stresses without a yield penalty under optimal growing conditions is a challenge for breeders working in stress-vulnerable agro-ecologies in the *** stress-resilient maize for rainfed stress-prone ecologies is identified as one of the priority areas for CIMMYT-Asia maize *** applied rapid cycle genomic selection(RCGS)on two multiparent yellow synthetic populations(MYS-1 and MYS-2)to improve grain yield simultaneously under drought and waterlogging conditions using genomic-estimated breeding values(GEBVs).Also,the populations were simultaneously advanced using recurrent phenotypic selection(PS)by exposing them to managed drought and waterlogging and intermating tolerant plants from the two selection *** cycles per se(C1,C2,and C3)of the two populations developed using RCGS and PS approach and their test-cross progenies were evaluated separately in multilocation trials under managed drought,waterlogging,and optimal moisture *** genetic gains were observed with both GS and PS,except with PS in MYS-2 under drought and with GS in MYS-1 under *** genetic gains from GS were relatively higher under drought conditions(110 and 135 kg ha^(-1) year^(-1))compared to waterlogging(38 and 113 kg ha^(-1) year^(-1))in both MYS-1 and MYS-2,***,under waterlogging stress PS showed at par or better than GS as gain per year with PS was 80 and 90 kg ha^(-1),whereas with GS it was 90 and 43 kg ha^(-1) for MYS-1 and MYS-2,*** findings suggested that careful constitution of a multiparent population by involving trait donors for targeted stresses,along with elite highyielding parents from diverse genetic background,and its improvement using RCGS is an effe
