Oil Removing from Emulsions Using Commercial Resins

Removal of vegetal oil from wastewater using comercial resins in batch reactors processes is studied in present study. A traditional and patented type of three different surfactants was used for stabilizing of the emulsion phase. The results for the emulsion made by the synthesized surfactant showed much better stability and performance in the separation process compared to that by conventionally used Span 80. To determine the optimum operation conditions, the effect of several parameters such as initial oil concentration, amount of resin in the solid phase, adding or not a surfactant, resin type, and stabilizer concentration have been investigated. It was found that under the optimum conditions, more than 98% ofoil can be removed in a single batch process.

Morphophysiological responses of forest seedling species subjected to different water regimes

Water availability is a limiting factor for the establishment and development of forest *** understand the appropriate conditions for the initial post-transplanting phase,it is necessary to understand the specific morphophysiological characteristics of the species,such as the leaf water potential and the efficiency of photosystemⅡ.We aimed to identify the influence of different water regimes on the morphophysiological aspects of young plants of two forest species(*** Vellozo and Eucalyptus saligna Sm.).Two greenhouse experiments were conducted for 28 days;one for each *** design was completely randomized,and the treatments consisted of six different water *** water potential(Ψw)and chlorophyll a fluorescence were evaluated every 7 *** the end of the experiment,morphological attributes(height,collection diameter,root volume,and dry matter)were measured and histological blades were *** water demand of *** was higher than that of *** and required greater replacement within a shorter *** rehydration fromΨw=-2 Mpa allowed for a fast recovery of the young *** plants(Ψw=-1.5,Fv/Fm=0.796),which indicated good physiological plasticity of this species when submitted to water stress at a level that is not *** total dry matter allocation was different among *** of *** presented the best responses when submitted to a continuous water supply regime,while *** seedlings presented the best response under intermittent irrigation conditions.

We aim to evaluate the quality of the Guanabara Bay sediments and the ecological changes due to the PETROBRAS crude oil leak in January 2000. Twenty-six sediment samples collected in July 2000 and in February 2001 were analyzed for pH, dissolved oxygen, and foraminiferal composition. In the northwest and central parts of the bay, low oxygen dissolved values are related to waste discharges with the dominance of Buliminella elegantissima. In winter, near Iguaçu River, the pH of the sediment is low, therefore highly acidic. The acidity is responsible for the foraminiferal low diversity limiting the occurrence of species with fragile tests. On the other hand, thicker tests of Elphidium spp. disappeared last, therefore increasing its relative dominance in winter. In summer, this is a barren zone. The explanation lies in the continuous dissolution of tests that culminated with the total disappearance of these microorganisms one year after the accident.
