The aim of the present study was to evaluate the performance of Napier cultivars in terms of forage yield, plant morphology and nutrient contents under two different agro-ecology and geo-topographic conditions. Three Napier cultivars being conserved by Bangladesh Livestock Research Institute (BLRI), namely-BLRI-Napier 1, (BN-1), BLRI-Napier 3 (BN-3) and Merkeron (BN-5) were selected to cultivate in severe drought prone areas (called Barind) and non-drought area at Savar (Modhupur terrace). Stem cuttings were planted in rows apart from 70 cm and 35cm spacing between plants. Data of 6 consecutive harvests from a period of approximately one year were collected and analyzed statistically by “R” software. The results showed that cultivar and location had a significant (P were significantly varied with locations. BN-3 yielded the highest biomass (33.32 t/ha/harvest) at non-drought location (42.98 t/ha/harvest). The highest plant height was obtained in BN-1 (171.2 cm) at non-drought location (174.6 cm). Number of tillers per hill ranged from 25.4 to 26.3 among cultivars (P > 0.05) and the highest tillers were found at non-drought location (28.1 no). The best LSR was estimated from BN-5 (0.86) at drought location (0.95). The proximate analysis showed that CP, ADF and NDF in whole plant were varied significantly (P < 0.001), being the highest contents in BN-1 (10.69%, 46.20% and 54.58

An experiment was conducted to evaluate the growth performance and cost per gain of indigenous and crossbred （local x Holstein Friesian （L x HF）） bulls under four different improved feed treatments to determine the appropriate ration for economic organic beef production in Bangladesh. Twenty indigenous bulls （average body weight 208.08 ± 13.98 kg） and 20 crossbred （L x l-IF） bulls （average body weight 256.26 ± 26.85 kg） of 24 months age were divided into four equal groups and fed on four diets （T0, T1, T2 and T3） up to 120 d, where To referred to the conventional diet, and T1, T2 and T3 referred as improved organic diets. Required dry matter for individual animal was supplied by roughage and concentrate sources of the ration in the ratio of 2：1. Local grass and paddy straw were supplied to group T0 and T1, Napier grass and straw to group T2, and Napier grass （Pennisetum purpureum）, straw and Ipil-ipil leaf （Leuceana leucucephala） to group Ts as roughage; whereas, the concentrate was supplied as 1.5% of live weight. The results revealed that total dry matter intake （DMI）, total DMI as percent live weight （%LW）, feed conversion ratio （FCR） and average daily gain （ADG） varied significantly （P 〈 0.01） among different treatment groups. Breed also had significant （P 〈 0.01） effect on total DMI, FCR and ADG, but total DMI （%LW） was not affected by breed type. Feed cost expressed as per kg live weight gain （LWG）（BDT/kg LWG; 1USD = 78.95 BDT）, were also affected （P 〈 0.01） by feed treatments and breed type. Indigenous and crossbred bulls fed diet T3 had higher ADG （0.49 kg and 1.17 kg, respectively） and comparatively lower feed costs （156 BDT/kg LWG and 96.78 BDT/kg LWG, respectively）. But crossbred （L × HF） bulls showed the highest ADG （1.17 kg） and the lowest feed cost （96.78 BDT/kg LWG）. Study on Feeding Effect of Different Levels of Protein and Energy on Production Performance of Pregnant Mother and Neo-Natal Calves

The present study was undertaken to assess feeding effect on productive and reproductive performances of pre-natal and post-natal Red Chittagong Cattle （RCC） cows under on-station condition. A total of 16 pregnant RCC cows having pregnancy 6-7 months and between 1-3 parities was selected for the study and was allocated randomly into four dietary treatment groups. There are four type diets, i.e., To （standard diet according to National Research Council （NRC）, 1995）, T1 （5% below standard diet）, T2 （5% above standard diet）, T3 （10% above standard diet） and a control treatment T4 （maintained as farm practice）. The energy and protein requirements of experimental cows were determined as per standard developed by NRC. The results revealed that crude protein （CP） and metabolizable energy （ME, MJ/day） requirements among cows of different dietary groups were not significantly different, although CP requirements between T1 and T3 differed significantly. Total dry mater （DM） and ME intake differed significantly （P 〈 0.001） among cows of different dietary groups, but DM intake was significantly lower for cows in farm practice group Z4 compared to the cows of other dietary groups. The total CP intake had no significant variation （P 〉 0.05） among cows of all dietary groups, but CP intake from roughage varied significantly （P 〈 0.001）. Final live weight and total live weight gain had no significant variation for cows of all groups, but there were significant （P 〈 0.05） variation for daily weight gain. Daily weight gain of cows for first four dietary groups were significantly （P 〈 0.05） higher than cows of farm practice groups T4. Weight of calf from birth to 90 days and daily weight gain calves under different dietary groups showed that there were no significant （P 〉 0.05） variation of calf birth weights for all dietary groups, although lower birth weight was found in farm practice groups T4. Effect of Concentrate to Roughage Ratio on Cost Effective Growth Performance of Brahman Crossbred Calves

An experiment was conducted to evaluate the growth performance and cost per gain of Brahman × local crossbred bull calves receiving three diets with varying concentrate to roughage ratio （C：R） of 75：25, 65：35 and 55：45 on dry matter （DM） basis. Twelve bull calves （aging 11.5 ±1.2 months and 170.8 ± 13.0 kg live weight） divided into three equal groups were fed on three diets. The diets were balanced to 14.5% crude protein （CP） level and 10.5 MJ metabolizable energy （ME） per kg DM, formulating different concentrate mixtures. German grass （Echinoclora grousgali） and paddy straw were offered at 2：1 ratio on DM basis as roughages. The results revealed that C：R ratio did not affect （P 〉 0.05） the intake of feed and nutrients, feed efficiency （7.04, 6.94 and 6.76） and average daily gain （981,958 and 976 g）. Digestibility of nutrients was not affected （P 〉 0.05） by C：R. Animals fed diet with C：R = 55：45 had the lowest feed cost （Bangladeshi Taka 136.8 BDT/kg live weight gain）, which was increased （147.5 B DT and 153.8 BDT） non-significantly （P 〉 0.05） with the increasing level of concentrate. The diet consisting of 55% concentrate mixture showed similar results with the diet consisting of 75% concentrate mixture, but was comparatively economic. Therefore, considering the growth performance and cost per kg gain of Brahman crossbred growing calves, it may be concluded that the diet consisting of 55：45 C：R may be used for economic beef production.

Feeding Effect of Triticale Fodder as Replacement of Straw on Production Performance of Dairy Cows

Twenty lactating cows of two to five parity having an average live weight of 290.00 to 330.00 kg and an average milk production of 4.54 kg/head/day to 4.66 kg/head/day were selected from the Central Cattle breeding Station and Dairy Farm. The four dietary treatment were： SlooTo （Straw 100： Triticale 0 as control）; $5oT5o （Straw 50： Triticale 50）; $25T75 （Straw 25： Triticale 75） and SoTloo （Straw 0： Triticale 100）. It was observed that the roughage dry matter intake （DMI）（2.61 ~ 0.07 kg） in percent live weight was significantly （P 〈 0.05） higher in $25T75 and the lowest （1.76 ~ 0.018 kg） in the control group （SlooTo） and the differences were significant among the dietary treatments except $5oT5o and SoTloo. The total DMI was significantly （P 〈 0.05） higher in SoT^oo （13.36 i 0.13 kg） followed by $25T75, $5oT5o and SlooTo, respectively. The digestibility of crude protein （CP） was slightly higher in $25T75 （75.48 ~ 0.96） compared to SoTtoo （75.31 ~ 1.45） and the difference was non-significant （P 〉 0.05）. Milk production was significantly （P 〈 0.05） the highest in $5oT5o and the lowest in SlooTo followed by SoTloo, $25T75, respectively. The percent increased in milk yield was also the highest in $5oT5o （67.68%） and the lowest in SlooTo （28.85%）. The 4% fat corrected milk was also significantly （P 〈 0.05） higher in $5oT5o followed by SoTloo, $25T75 and SlooTo, respectively. Therefore, it can be concluded that triticale and straw at a ratio of 50：50 may be fed for better production performance of dairy cows.
