Efficacy of Palmitoylethanolamide (Levagen+^TM) Compared to Ibuprofen for Reducing Headache Pain Severity and Duration in Healthy Adults: A Double-Blind, Parallel, Randomized Clinical Trial

Background: Palmitoylethanolamide (PEA) has shown promise as an analgesic for those with chronic pain pathologies. With recently increased bioavailability, PEA may also be a treatment for acute pain presentations such as tension-type headaches. Aim: To assess the efficacy of a bioavailable PEA formulation (Levagen+TM) for reducing the severity and duration of acute episodes of tension-type headaches when compared to a standard treatment, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) (the comparator). Methods: The study was a double-blind, randomized, single site, comparator controlled clinical study, with the cohort consisting of otherwise healthy adults, aged between 18 and 71, who experienced regular tension-type headaches. 94 adults experiencing headaches were randomised to receive either PEA (n = 47) or Ibuprofen comparator (n = 47). Upon headache onset, participants consumed their allocated product, recorded pain levels using a visual analogue scale (VAS) and continued to log their pain scores at 30-minute intervals for up to 4-hours. Results: Eighty-six participants (44 active treatment and 42 comparator) recorded at least one headache with a total of 271 tension-type headaches recorded (120 active treatment and 151 comparator). Most headaches were reduced in both treatment arms by 2 hours and almost all by 4 hours;90% in the PEA group, and 97% in comparator group, p > 0.5. For moderate at onset headaches, the comparator group had a greater percentage of pain-free events at 2-hours. However, the time taken to resolve severe headaches was significantly lower in the PEA group than the comparator group (p Conclusions: These results place PEA as a potential treatment option for tension-type headaches.

Quantitative Real-Time PCR as a Novel Detection Method for Micro-RNAs Expressed by Cervical Cancer Tissue: A Review

The potential of microRNAs (miRNA) as biomarkers of Cervical Cancer (CC) is analyzed extensively by many researchers today. However, some studies have shown that miRNAs are expressed in cancers and may act as a better diagnostic strategy than the Pap smear or even assist it as a screening strategy. MicroRNA expression has been shown to differ in precancerous lesions as well as in cervical cancer tumours from that of normal tissue. With the use of quantitative real-time PCR (qRT-PCR), microRNAs can be detected in many sample types ranging from biopsy samples to blood (serum and plasma). Early detection of the disease is possible due to the aberrant expression of miRNAs in precancerous stages as well as advanced stages of the disease;this proves that they have the potential to be an ideal novel biomarker for CC. This review discusses studies using qRT-PCR to detect the expression of miRNAs within the years 2008-2019 and focuses on giving an insight into the types of samples and kits that have been used. Publications which have used qRT-PCR as a primary or secondary detection method were selected via Google Scholar Search and PubMed. Studies were shown to have used a variety of kits and reagents, but all have applied the main principle of qRT-PCR. Quantitative Real-Time PCR is shown to be a versatile and accurate detection technique for miRNAs of CC.

Exploring the Empathy - Aggression Relationship, and Gender Related Differences in Greek College Students

The present study examined the inverse relationship between empathy(cognitive and affective)and forms of aggression(physical,verbal,anger and hostility).Previous research has continuously argued that empathy mitigates forms of aggression in individuals due to cognitive perspective taking and emotional sharing with others,that buffer hostile behaviour towards one ***,there is a gap in the literature regarding this association in Greek *** correlational analysis examined empathy using the widely known multifaceted Davis Interpersonal Reactivity Index and aggression was explored using the multi-dimensional Buss-Perry Aggression Questionnaire in a sample of 92 Greek undergraduate college students from two private institutions in Athens,*** effects on aggression and empathy levels were investigated as *** results revealed that cognitive and emotional empathy indeed demonstrates a negative relationship with direct physical ***,other forms of aggression such as verbal aggression,hostility and anger were positively associated with personal distress and Empathic fantasy majorly linked to Greek emotional regulation *** displayed higher Empathic fantasy scores compared to males.A cultural perspective was adopted in exploring the results considering norms,gender roles,collective regulation capacities and societal conditioning,offering links to previous literature and theories.
