Alignment of the hindfoot following total knee arthroplasty: A systematic review

BACKGROUND There appears to be a close relationship between deformities at the knee joint and at the hindfoot in patients with knee osteoarthritis(OA).Despite this intrinsic link,there is a dearth of studies investigating alterations in hindfoot alignment following total knee arthroplasty(TKA)in patients with knee *** To evaluate changes in alignment of the hindfoot following TKA,foot and ankle clinical outcomes in terms of subjective clinical scoring tools following surgical intervention,and to analyse the level of evidence(LOE)and quality of evidence(QOE)of the included *** MEDLINE,EMBASE and Cochrane Library databases were systematically reviewed in accordance with the preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses *** reporting changes in the postoperative alignment of the hindfoot following TKA were *** level and QOE were recorded and *** Eleven studies with a total of 1142 patients(1358 knees)met the inclusion/exclusion *** studies were of LOE II and 5 studies were of LOE *** with preoperative varus knee deformity and valgus hindfoot deformity demonstrated improvement in hindfoot alignment post *** with preoperative varus knee deformity and varus hindfoot deformity demonstrated no improvement in hindfoot alignment following *** different radiographic parameters were used to measure the alignment of the hindfoot across the included studies,with the tibio-calcaneal angle most frequently utilised(27.3%).CONCLUSION This systematic review demonstrated that the hindfoot may display compensatory changes in alignment following TKA in patients with knee ***,the marked heterogeneity between the included studies and poor QOE limits any meaningful cross sectional comparisons between ***,well designed studies are necessary to determine the changes and outcomes of hindfoot alignment following TKA.

BACKGROUND Cheilectomy of the 1^(st)metatarsophalangeal joint(MTpJ)is one of the most common procedures for the management of hallux ***,there is no consensus regarding outcomes following minimally invasive dorsal cheilectomy(MIDC)for the management of hallux *** To evaluate outcomes following MIDC for the management of hallux *** During November 2023,the pubMed,EMBASE and Cochrane Library databases were systematically reviewed to identify clinical studies examining outcomes following MIDC for the management of hallux *** Six studies were *** total,348 patients(370 feet)underwent MIDC for hallux rigidus at a weighted mean follow-up of 37.9±16.5 *** distribution of patients by Coughlin and Shurna's classification was recorded in 4 studies as follows:Ⅰ(58 patients,27.1%),Ⅱ(112 patients,52.3%),Ⅲ(44 patients,20.6%).Three studies performed an additional 1^(st)MTpJ arthroscopy and debridement following *** intra-articular bone debris was observed in 100%of patients in 1 *** weighted mean American orthopedic foot and ankle society score improved from a preoperative score of 68.9±3.2 to a postoperative score of *** complication rate was 8.4%,the most common of which was persistent joint pain and ***-two failures(8.7%)were ***-three secondary procedures(8.9%)were performed at a weighted mean time of 8.6±3.2 months following the index *** This systematic review demonstrated improvements in subjective clinical outcomes together with a moderate complication rate following MIDC for the management of hallux rigidus at short-term follow-up.A moderate reoperation rate at short-term follow-up was *** marked heterogeneity between included studies and paucity of high quality comparative studies limits the generation of any robust conclusions.

In the early part of 2006 the philippines was hit by a La Nina event which brought floods, flashfloods and landslides. The most significant event was the February 2006 landslide that covered the whole community of Guinsaugon, in Southern Leyte, resulting in 154 deaths with 973 people still missing. Another rare event was the simultaneous presence of two tropical cyclones inside the philippine Area of Responsibility （pAR） in August-- Tropical Depression Bopha and Tropical Storm Saomai--that enhanced the southwest monsoon. With the strong winds and high waves associated with the southwest mon- soon, an oil tanker, the M/T Solar 1, sank, resulting in the worst oil spill the country has ever suffered. Lastly, with a weak El Nino phenomenon forming in the pacific Ocean and affecting the philippines, a destructive typhoon, Xangsane, made a multi-landfall before hitting Metropolitan Manila. This was followed by the landfall of three superty- phoons--Cimaron, Chebi and Durian--during the last quarter of the year, bringing tremendous destruction of life and property. The occurrence of these weather events are attributed to climate variability the effects of which were exacerbated by a range of factors that include inappropriate land use.

Environmental engineering of transition metal dichalcogenide optoelectronics

The explosion of interest in two-dimensional van der Waals materials has been in many ways driven by their layered geometry. This feature makes possible numerous avenues for assembling and ma- nipulating the optical and electronic properties of these materials. In the specific case of monolayer transition metal dichalcogenide semiconductors, the direct band gap combined with the flexibility for manipulation of layers has made this class of materials promising for optoelectronics. Here, we review the properties of these layered materials and the various means of engineering these properties for optoeleetronics. We summarize approaches for control that modify their structural and chemical en- vironment, and we give particular detail on the integration of these materials into engineered optical fields to control their optical characteristics. This combination of controllability from their layered surface structure and photonic environment provide an expansive landscape for novel optoelectronic phenomena.

Three-dimensional impact kinetics with foot-strike manipulations during running

Background: Lack of an observable vertical impact peak in fore/mid-foot running has been suggested as a means of reducing lower extremity impact forces, although it is unclear if impact characteristics exist in other axes. The purpose of the investigation was to compare three-dimensional(3 D) impact kinetics among foot-strike conditions in over-ground running using instantaneous loading rate–time ***: Impact characteristics were assessed by identifying peak loading rates in each direction(medial–lateral(ML), anterior–posterior(Ap),vertical, and 3 D resultant) following foot-strike instructions(fore-foot, mid-foot, subtle heel, and obvious heel strike). Kinematic and kinetic data were analyzed among 9 male participants in each foot-strike ***: Loading rate peaks were observed in each direction and foot-strike condition, differing in magnitude by direction(3 D resultant and vertical > Ap > ML, p ≤ 0.031) and foot-strike: ML(fore-foot and mid-foot strike > obvious heel strike, p ≤ 0.032), Ap(fore-foot and mid-foot strikes > subtle-heel and obvious heel strikes, p ≤ 0.023). In each direction, the first loading rate peak occurred later during heel strike running relative to fore-foot(p ≤ 0.019), with vertical and 3 D resultant impact durations exceeding shear(ML and Ap, p ≤ 0.007) in each ***: Loading rate–time assessment identified contrasting impact characteristics in each direction and the 3 D resultant following foot-strike manipulations, with potential implications for lower extremity structures in running.

Genetic Algorithm Neural Network(GANN)for multi-class was used to predict the ripeness grades of oil palm fresh fruit using Near Infrared(NIR)spectral *** spectral data provide sufficient information about compound structure of samples from the near infrared light that passes *** variables used in the GANN modeling process were the new variables obtained as a result of dimensional reduction from original NIR spectral data using principal Component Analysis(pCA).Three statistical measures such asMean Absolute Error(MAE),Root Mean Squared Error(RMSE)and the percentage(%)of good classification were used to assess adequacy of the GANN *** on the results,the GANN model created was precise enough to be used as the model calibration for this multi-class problem.

Nutritional quality of formulated complementary diet from defatted almond seed,yellow maize and quality protein maize flours

Traditional complementary foods are mainly starchy foods with limiting nutrient quality and can be fortified using protein rich crops like almond *** research thus aimed at investigating the nutritional quality of the formulated complementary diet from locally available almond seeds(prunus amygdalus),high quality protein(QpM)and yellow maize after blending into *** proximate and amino acid compositions,in vitro protein qualities and functional properties of the blended flours were determined using standard *** in vivo studies involved feeding the weanling Wister albino rats with blended flours and commercial Cerelac(control),followed by hematological and histopathological determinations,while sensory attributes were evaluated by the semi-trained *** protein contents of the flour blends(24–28%)were significantly(ppensable amino acids and improved functionalities than commercial cerelac(23%).Comparatively,the dried germinated QpM(DGQpM)has significant(ppM(FHQpM)(~30%),thereby indicating that the germination process improved protein quality of the ***,the in vivo data showed a positive effect of germination process as the rats fed with DGQpM has low white blood cells(30×10^(2))compared to FHQpM(42×10^(2))and cerelac(51×10^(2)).However,the fermentation process improved the packed cell volume of rats fed with FHQpM(49%)when compared to DGQpM and cerelac(47%).The formulated diets have no negative effects on the protein content(45.19–51.88 mg N/g)and weight(0.25–1.36 g)of the internal organs(liver,kidney and tissue)of the animals when compared to cerelac(53.72–55.04 mg N/g;0.25–1.98 g),*** panelists generally accepted all the formulated diets,hence encouraging their utilization in the global preparation of complimentary foods for young children to meet their nutritional needs and adding value to the locally produced underutilized alm
