Water quality impacts of small-scale hydromodification in an urban stream in Connecticut, UsA

Introduction:Construction activities in and along urban streams increase the sediment input into surface waters,causing an overall decline in water quality and aquatic *** this case study,we investigate the water quality impacts of local hydromodification in an urban stream(discharge 0.4 m^(3)/s).At the site of interest,workers removed a stream crossing consisting of an embankment with culverts and replaced it with a small bridge(single span of 25 m)in an effort to improve flow ***:Water samples were taken at four sites along the North Branch Park River in Connecticut,Northeastern United *** and dissolved oxygen(DO)were measured in situ,and nitrate and total phosphorus(TP)were measured in the *** macroinvertebrate samples were also collected and analyzed for taxon richness and shannon-Weaver species *** were compared between upstream and downstream sites and before,during,and after *** used one-way ANOVA combined with the post hoc Turkey test to derive statistical ***:During construction,turbidity increased temporarily by 60.9%[from 2.48 Nephelometric Turbidity Units(NTU)over ambient to 4.00 NTU].Once construction was completed,DO increased locally from 11.0 to 13.0 mg/*** macroinvertebrate taxon richness and species diversity declined by 61.6 and 32.6%respectively,with no recovery observed in the year following *** quality was only affected within 50 m *** and TP concentrations were ***:small-scale hydromodification temporarily increased the turbidity as a result of increased sediment input,approaching the maximum level for clean water(5 NTU).Benthic macroinvertebrate communities declined in the immediate downstream vicinity of construction but are expected to recover soon given that turbidity recovered to pre-construction levels,and DO *** outcomes emphasize that environmental assessment is important not

Implementation of FPGA Based Hybrid Power Generator for PV and Wind Grid Applications

This paper deals with implementation of sinusoidal Pulse-Width-Modulation (sPWM) for a single-phase hybrid power filter generator for Photovoltaic (PV) and wind grid applications. Using policy iteration algorithm, an improved variable step-size perturbation and observation algorithm is contrived and it is implemented proficiently using a hard-ware description language (VHDL) (Very High speed Integrated Circuit Hardware Description Language). subsequently, the new generated grid source supplements the existing grid power in rural houses during its cut off or restricted supply period. The software is used for generating sPWM modulation integrated with a solar-power & wind power grid system which is implemented on the spartan 3 FPGA. The proposed algorithm performs as a conventional controller in terms of tracking speed and mitigating fluctuation output power in steady state operation which is shown in the experimental results with a commercial PV array and HPW (Height Weight Proportional) show. simulation results demonstrate the validity with load of the proposed algorithm.

Individual automatic detection and identification of big cats with the combination of different body parts

The development of facial recognition technology has become an increasingly powerful tool in wild animal indi-vidual *** this paper,we develop an automatic detection and recognition method with the combinations of body features of big cats based on the deep convolutional neural network(CNN).We collected dataset including 12244 images from 47 individual Amur tigers(Panthera tigris altaica)at the siberian Tiger Park by mobile phones and digital camera and 1940 images and videos of 12 individual wild Amur leopard(Panthera pardus orientalis)by infrared ***,the single shot multibox detector algorithm is used to perform the automatic detection process of feature regions in each *** the different feature regions of the image,like face stripe or spots,CNNs and multi-layer perceptron models were applied to automatically identify tiger and leopard individuals,*** results show that the identiﬁcation accuracy of Amur tiger can reach up to 93.27%for face front,93.33%for right body stripe,and 93.46%for left body ***,the combination of right face,left body stripe,and right body stripe achieves the highest accuracy rate,up to 95.55%.Consequently,the combination of different body parts can improve the individual identiﬁcation ***,it is not the higher the number of body parts,the higher the accuracy *** combination model with 3 body parts has the highest *** identiﬁcation accuracy of Amur leopard can reach up to 86.90%for face front,89.13%for left body spots,and 88.33%for right body *** accuracy of different body parts combination is lower than the independent *** wild Amur leopard,the combination of face with body spot part is not helpful for the improvement of identiﬁcation *** most effective identiﬁcation part is still the independent left or right body spot *** can be applied in long-term monitoring of big cats,including big data analysis for animal behavior,and be helpful

A quantification of the treadmill 6-min walk test using the My Wellness Key^(TM) accelerometer

Background： Accelerometers have been suggested to provide additional information during the 6-min walk test which may be useful in evaluating changes in functional exercise capacity. The aim of the study was to identify whether the additional information measured by the My Wellness Key^TM（MWK） accelerometer during a treadmill 6-min walk test（t-6MWT） was related to currently used outcome ***： Fifteen participants（9 males, 6 females） performed a self-paced t-6MWT. Respiratory gas analysis and walking distance were measured whilst wearing the ***： A significant correlation was established between activity counts and 6-min walk distance（6MWD）（r=-0.847, p 〈 0.001） yet not 6-min walk work（6MWW）（r=-0.337, p=0.220）. Energy expenditure estimated by the MWK was strongly correlated to 6MWW（r=0.938, p 〈 0.001）but not 6MWD（r=0.477, p=0.072）. The MWK significantly underestimated energy expenditure（36.73, CI=33.9-39.7 kcal） compared to gas analysis（54.35, CI=46.2-61.4 kcal） demonstrating poor agreement between the two analyses（Bias=-17.61 kcal, Limits of agreement=-37.4,t2.2 kcal）. Measurement of time spent undertaking light, moderate, and vigorous physical activity was not significantly different（ p 〉 0.05）between the MWK and gas ***： Estimated energy expenditure provided by the MWK was strongly correlated to 6MWW; however, MWK underestimated energy expenditure as measured by gas analysis. The MWK may provide outcome data that supplement those currently provided by the 6MWD for functional capacity assessment during the t-6MWT.

Photocatalytic OH radical formation and quantification over TiO_2 P25:Producing a robust and optimised screening method

The development of photocatalytic technology has grown significantly since its initial report and as such,a number of screening methods have been developed to assess activity. In the field of environmental remediation, a crucial factor is the formation of highly oxidising species such as OH radicals. These radicals are often the primary driving force for the removal and breakdown of organic and inorganic contaminants. The quantification of such compounds is challenging due to the nature of the radical,however indirect methods which deploy a chemical probe to essentially capture the radical have been shown to be effective. As discussed in the work presented here, optimisation of such a method is fundamental to the efficiency of the method. A starting concentration range of coumarin from 50 mmol/L to 1000 mmol/L was used along with a catalyst loading of 0.01 g/L to 1 g/L Ti TiO2 to identify that 250 mmol/L and 0.5 g/L Ti TiO2 were the optimum conditions for production. Under these parameters a maximum production rate of 35.91 mmol/L（Rmax= 0.4 mmol/L OH＊ min-1） was achieved which yielded at photonic efficiency of 4.88 OH＊moles photon-1 under UV irradiation. The data set presented also highlighted the limitations which are associated with the method which included; rapid exhaustion of the probe molecule and process inhibition through UV light saturation. Identifying both the optimum conditions and the potential limitations of the process were concluded to be key for the efficient deployment of the photocatalytic screening method.

A micromirror array with annular partitioning for high-speed random-access axial focusing

Dynamic axial focusing functionality has recently experienced widespread incorporation in microscopy,augmented/virtual reality(AR/VR),adaptive optics and material ***,the limitations of existing varifocal tools continue to beset the performance capabilities and operating overhead of the optical systems that mobilize such *** varifocal tools that are the least burdensome to operate(*** crystal,elastomeric or optofluidic lenses)suffer from low(≈100 Hz)refresh ***,the fastest devices sacrifice either critical capabilities such as their dwelling capacity(*** gradient lenses or monolithic micromechanical mirrors)or low operating overhead(*** mirrors).Here,we present a general-purpose random-access axial focusing device that bridges these previously conflicting features of high speed,dwelling capacity and lightweight drive by employing lowrigidity micromirrors that exploit the robustness of defocusing phase ***,the device consists of an 8.2mm diameter array of piston-motion and 48-μm-pitch micromirror pixels that provide 2πphase shifting for wavelengths shorter than 1100 nm with 10-90% settling in 64.8μs(i.e.,15.44 kHz refresh rate).The pixels are electrically partitioned into 32 rings for a driving scheme that enables phase-wrapped operation with circular symmetry and requiress demonstrated the array’s wide focusing range with a measured ability to target 29 distinct resolvable depth ***,the features of the proposed array offer the potential for compact,straightforward methods of tackling bottlenecked applications,including high-throughput single-cell targeting in neurobiology and the delivery of dense 3D visual information in AR/VR.
