The effect of acute aerobic exercise on central arterial stiffness,wave reflections,and hemodynamics in adults with diabetes:A randomized cross-over design

Background:Individuals with diabetes have greater central arterial stiffness,wave reflections,and hemodynamics,all of which promote the accelerated cardiovascular pathology seen in this population.Acute aerobic exercise has been shown to be an effective strategy for reducing central arterial stiffness,wave reflections,and hemodynamics in healthy individuals;however,the effects of acute aerobic exercise in reducing these outcomes is not well established in people with diabetes.Recently,implementation of high-intensity interval exercise(HIIE)has shown superior improvements in cardiovascular health outcomes when compared to traditional aerobic exercise.Yet,the effect of HIIE on the aforementioned outcomes in people with diabetes is not known.The purpose of this study was to(i)describe the central arterial stiffness,wave reflections,and hemodynamic responses to a bout of HIIE and moderate-intensity continuous exercise(MICE)in adults with diabetes;and(ii)compare the effects of HIIE and MICE on the aforementioned outcomes.Methods:A total of 24 adult men and women(aged 29-59 years old)with type 1(n=12)and type 2(n=12)diabetes participated in a randomized cross-over study.All participants completed the following protocols:(i)HIIE:cycling for 4×4 min at 85%-95%of heart rate peak(HR_(peak)),interspersed with 3 min of active recovery at 60%-70%HR_(peak);(ii)MICE:33 min of continuous cycling at 60%-70%HR_(peak);and(iii)control(CON):lying quietly in a supine position for 30 min.Results:A significant group￡time effect was found for changes in central systolic blood pressure(F=3.20,p=0.01)with a transient reduction for the HIIE group but not for the MICE or CON groups.There was a significant group￡time effect for changes in augmentation index at a heart rate of 75 beats/min(F=2.32,p=0.04)with a decrease following for HIIE and MICE but not for CON.For all other measures of central arterial stiffness and hemodynamics,no significant changes were observed(p>0.05).Conclusion:A bout of HIIE appears to lead to a greater transient redu

Dear editor,We thank Lopes et al.^(1) for their interest in our study and for writing an insightful commentary based on our findings,which were recently published in the Journal of Sport and Health Science,^(2) and for their work.^(3) As noted by the authors,there is consistency in several key findings between our laboratories,and this should serve as a basis for future investigation in this area.We agree that there has been little work examining the effect of high-intensity interval exercise(HIIE)on central arterial stiffness.

Background:Large numbers of post-deployment U.S.veterans are diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder(PTSD)and/or traumatic brain injury(TBI),leading to an urgent need for effective interventions to reduce symptoms and increase veterans’coping.PTSD includes anxiety,flashbacks,and emotional numbing.The symptoms increase health care costs for stress-related illnesses and can make veterans’civilian life difficult.Methods:We used a randomized wait-list controlled design with repeated measures of U.S.military veterans to address our specific aim to test the efficacy of a 6-week therapeutic horseback riding(THR)program for decreasing PTSD symptoms and increasing coping self-efficacy,emotion regulation,social and emotional loneliness.Fiftyseven participants were recruited and 29 enrolled in the randomized trial.They were randomly assigned to either the horse riding group(n=15)or a wait-list control group(n=14).The wait-list control group experienced a 6-week waiting period,while the horse riding group began THR.The wait-list control group began riding after 6 weeks of participating in the control group.Demographic and health history information was obtained from all the participants.PTSD symptoms were measured using the standardized PTSD Checklist-Military Version(PCL-M).The PCL-M as well as other instruments including,The Coping Self Efficacy Scale(CSES),The Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale(DERS)and The Social and Emotional Loneliness Scale for Adults-short version(SELSA)were used to access different aspects of individual well-being and the PTSD symptoms.Results:Participants had a statistically significant decrease in PTSD scores after 3 weeks of THR(P≤0.01)as well as a statistically and clinically significant decrease after 6 weeks of THR(P≤0.01).Logistic regression showed that participants had a 66.7%likelihood of having lower PTSD scores at 3 weeks and 87.5%likelihood at 6 weeks.Under the generalized linear model(GLM),our ANOVA findings for the coping self-efficacy,emotion regulation,and social and emot

Assessment of Heavy Metals Pollution in Sediments from Ologe Lagoon, Agbara, Lagos, Nigeria

This study was carried out to assess the level of heavy metals pollution in Ologe Lagoon, Agbara, Lagos, Nigeria. The Lagoon receives effluents from industries in the Agbara Industrial Estate. Cored Soft sediments were retrieved from six random sampling points within the Lagoon and labeled (S1, S2, S3, S4, S5 and S6). Subsamples of the sediments were prepared and analyzed for heavy metal concentration. The result from the heavy metal analysis of the sediments shows that average concentration of Mn, Zn, Cr, Ni, Cr, Ni, Co, Cu and Pb in the samples was 278.1 ppm, 21.7 ppm, 14.2 ppm, 6.6 ppm, 6.4 ppm, 6.4 ppm and 4.4 ppm, respectively. The correlation between the heavy metals varies from 0.71 to 0.98 shows that they have a strongly positive degree of association which suggests that they are from the same source. The geo-accumulation values for Cu in all stations ranged between (1 - 2.8 ppm) and it can be deduced that the sediments are moderately to strongly polluted. Pb varies between 1 and 2.1 suggesting that the sediments are moderately polluted. Zn exhibits strong pollution levels with a range from 2.5 and 3.5 ppm. Co is moderately polluted with 1.5 - 2.4 while Mn shows the highest level of pollution in all stations with Igeo values ranging between 4.1 and 5.8. This study showed that the Lagoon accumulates heavy metals as a result of anthropogenic activities evident in the dumping of municipal, sewage, industrial waste in the environment and domestic activities such as auto mobile transportation and mechanic repair workshop. Based on sediment quality guidelines, the Ologe Lagoon level of pollution ranged from Cu > Pb > Zn > Ni > Co > Mn > Cr > Al with Mn having the highest level of pollution.

"大衰退"之后,资本主义进入温和复苏阶段,经济增长受限,至今已经持续了10多年。长波理论旨在以超越商业周期的时间框架来解释资本主义发展模式,分析增长受限持续的原因。本文分析了19世纪至今英美两国的经验数据,发现资本主义经济存在明显的长波周期;对制造和工业生产、GDP、投资、资本形成、进出口、失业率和盈利能力等多项指标进行了评估,发现经济长波可以追溯到自由竞争资本主义危机时期。全球范围内的资本主义复兴使1992—2007年成为资本主义历史上一段特殊的增长时期,在此期间,前苏联国家艰难度日,美国恢复适度增长,而欧盟和经合组织成员国的增长则持续下滑。本文通过对各项经济指标进行的分析发现,"长周期"的理论解释无法得到验证,长波周期从强劲增长向有限增长的过渡主要受内生因素的影响,而经济好转则取决于充分的外生性社会政治体制冲击和技术革命。最后,本文还简要讨论了未来技术革命的前景和体制影响。

The mitochondrial redox state and its heterogeneity of colon cancer at tissue level have not been previously reported.Nor has how p53 regulates mitochondial respi ration been measured at(deep)tissue level,presumably due to the unavailability of the technology that has sufficient spatial resolution and tissue penetration depth.Our prior work demonstrated that the mito-chondrial redox state and its intnatumor heterogeneity is associated with cancer aggressiveness in human melanoma and breast cancer in mouse models,with the more metastatic tumons exhi-bit ing localized negions of more oxidized redox state.Using the Chance redox scanner with an in-plane spatial resolution of 200 pm,we imaged the mitochondrial redox state of the wild-type p53 colon tumors(HCT116 p53 ut)and the p5-deleted colon tumors(HCT116 p53-/-)by cllcting the fuorescence si gnals of nicotinamide adenine dimucleotide(NA DH)and oxidized flavoproteins [Fp,including favin adenine dinucleotide(FAD)]from the mouse xenogmafts snap frozen at low temperature.Our results show that:(1)both tumor lines have significant degree of intratumor heterogeneity of the redox state,typically exhibiting a distinct bi modal distribution that either correlates with the spatial core-rim pattern or the“hot/oold”oxida tion-roduction patches;.(2)the p531-group is significantly more beterogencous in the mitochondrial redox state and has a more oxidized turmor core compared to the p53 wt group when the tunor sizes of the two groups are matched;(3)the tumor size dependence of the redox indices(such as Fp and Fp redox ratio)is significant in the p531-group with the larger ones being more oxidized and more hetero-geneous in their redox state,particularly more oxidized in the tumor central regions;(4)the H&E staining images of tumor soctions grossly correlate with the redox images.The present work is the first to reveal at the submillimeter scale the intratumor heterogeneity pattem of the mitochon-drial redox state in colon cancer and the first to indicate that at tissue level the

＜正＞Earthquake damage of property and loss and injury of human life continues.Recently many laboratories worldwide have increased their abilities to mitigate the hazards of these reoccurring natural disasters.This paper presents new experimental techniques and applications from five laboratories,one in Canada,and four in the United States.The new techniques and technologies range from combining computational analyses with structural testing with strong wall and strong floor at the University of California at Berkelely, a new technique for increasing the capability of a medium size uniaxial shaking table at Ecole Polytechnique,a description of the world’s highest capacity outdoor shaking table at the University of California at San Diego,testing with multiple biaxial shaking tables at the University of Reno,Nevada,and finally,the combination of strong wall dynamic structural actuators with a shaking table and real time computational sub-structuring computations at the University at Buffalo（SUNY）.These new capabilities allow the researcher to increase the size of the specimens of interest,allowing much better results to study nonlinear behaviors and failure mechanisms.
