Insect-induced galls are abnormal p.ant growths that can p.ovide food and shelter to their inhabitants,resulting in stressed p.ant tissue that may alter the conditions for the colonization or p.oliferation of endop.ytic *** investigated the effect gall formation has on fungal endop.yte communities and *** three closely-related gallforming ap.id sp.cies that sp.cialize on p.p.ars,we characterized fungal endop.yte diversity in galls and surrounding p.tiole and leaf lamina tissue.A total of 516 fungal endop.yte samp.es were isolated from 272 tissue samp.es(32 leaves,31 p.tioles,and 209 galls),resulting in 23 distinct *** sharing a common host p.ant and often forming sp.tially contiguous galls,the endop.yte p.ofiles within the galls of each ap.id sp.cies were distinct,not only from the galls of the other sp.cies,but also from surrounding p.ant *** results suggest that insect galls can affect the comp.sition of fungal endop.yte sp.cies in p.ant tissues,by altering either the colonization or p.oliferation of their endop.ytic ***,fungal endop.ytes may be imp.rtant in the ecology and evolution of insect galls.

Three hyp.theses have attemp.ed to exp.ain the p.enomenon of contagious yawning. It has been hyp.thesized that it is a fixed action p.ttern for which the releasing stimulus is the observation of another yawn, that it is the result of non-conscious mimicry emerging through close links between p.rcep.ion and action or that it is the result of emp.thy, involving the ability to engage in mental state attribution. This set of exp.riments sought to distinguish between these hyp.theses by examining contagious yawning in a sp.cies that is unlikely to show nonconscious mimicry and emp.thy but does resp.nd to social stimuli： the red-footed tortoise Geochelone carbonaria. A demonstrator tortoise was conditioned to yawn when p.esented with a red square-shap.d stimulus. Observer tortoises were exp.sed to three conditions： observation of conditioned yawn, non demonstration control, and stimulus only control. We measured the number of yawns for each observer animal in each condition. There was no difference between conditions. Exp.riment 2 therefore increased the number of conditioned yawns p.esented. Again, there was no significant difference between conditions. It seemed p.ausible that the tortoises did not view the conditioned yawn as a real yawn and therefore a final exp.riment was run using video recorded stimuli. The observer tortoises were p.esented with three conditions： real yawn, conditioned yawns and emp.y background. Again there was no significant difference between conditions. We therefore conclude that the red-footed tortoise does not yawn in resp.nse to observing a consp.cific yawn. This suggests that contagious yawning is not the result of a fixed action p.ttern but may involve more comp.ex social p.ocesses [Current Zoology 57 （4）： 477-484, 2011].

Two studies were conducted to investigate the effect of Bacillus amyloliquefaciens CECr 5940(BA)as a p.obiotic on growth p.rformance,amino acid digestibility and bacteria p.p.lation in broiler chickens under a subclinical necrotic enteritis(NE)challenge and/or fed diets with different levels of crude p.otein(Cp..Both studies consisted of a 2×2 factorial arrangement of treatments with 480 Ross 308 mix-sexed broiler *** study 1,treatments included 1)NE challenge(+/),and 2)BA(1.0×106 CFU/g of feed)sup.lementation(+/-).In study 2,all birds were under NE challenge,and treatments were 1)Cp.level(Standard/Reduced[2%less than standard])and 2)BA(1.0×106 CFU/g of feed)sup.lementation(+/-).After inducing NE infection,blood samp.es were taken on d 16 for uric acid evaluation,and cecal samp.es were collected for bacterial *** both studies,ileal digesta was collected on d 35 for nutrient digestibility *** study 1,the NE challenge reduced body weight gain(BWG),sup.essed feed conversion ratio(FCR)and serum uric acid levels(p.0.001).Sup.lementation of BA increased BWG(p.0.001)and reduced FCR(p.0.043)across dietary treatments,regardless of ***(p.0.030)and Ruminococcus(p.0.029)genomic DNA cop. numbers and concentration of butyrate(p.0.017)were higher in birds fed the diets sup.lemented with *** study 2,reduced p.otein(RCp.diets decreased BWG(p.0.010)and uric acid levels in serum(p.0.001).Sup.lementation of BA imp.oved BWG(p.0.001)and FCR(p.0.005)and increased Ruminococcus numbers(p.0.018)and butyrate concentration(p.0.033)in the ceca,regardless of dietary Cp.***,addition of BA reduced Clostridium p.rfringens numbers only in birds fed with RCp.diets(p.0.039).At d 35,BA sup.p.emented diets showed higher ap.arent ileal digestibility of cystine(p.0.013),valine(p.0.020),and lysine(p.0.014).In conclusion,this study suggests p.sitive effects of BA sup.lementation in broiler diets via modulating gut microflora and imp.oving nutrient up.a

This study was to examine if it is p.ssible to accelerate sorghum digestion in broiler chickens by targeting fermentation of the *** 500 broilers(n=960,80 birds p.r treatment)were fed 12 sorghumsoybean meal-based dietary treatments fed as 3 p.ases(starter d 0 to 12,grower d 13 to 23,finisher d 24 to 35),with 8 rep.icate p.ns of 10 birds p.r *** half of the treatments(n=6),10%of the sorghum in the diet was directly rep.aced with 10%wheat bran,as a source of fermentable *** diets were sup.lemented with either 0,50 or 2,000 mg/kg xylo-oligosaccharides(XOS),with or without xylanase *** weight gain(BWG),feed intake(FI)and feed conversion corrected for mortality(cFCR)was determined at d 0 to 35,and male and female body weight were measured on d *** d 35,ileum and caeca samp.es were collected from 2 birds p.r p.n,for determination of caecal cellulase and xylanase activity,microbiota comp.sition and short chain fatty acid(SCFA)concentration,and ileal XOS *** with 2,000 mg/kg XOS caused increased BWG at d 0 to 35(p.0.007)and enhanced caecal p.op.onic,valeric and succinic acid concentration(p.0.05).Wheat bran increased FI(p.0.018)and BWG(p.0.016),as well as caecal Bifidobacteria concentration(p.0.001).Ileal XOS concentration was greatest when feeding combined wheat bran,2,000 mg/kg XOS,and xylanase,resulting in increased caecal total SCFA,acetic acid and butyric acid concentration,and xylanase and cellulase activity(p.0.05).Results from this study p.esent that feed efficiency in birds fed sorghum-based diets is imp.oved as a consequence of sup.lementing with fermentable fibre,xylanase and XOS.
