Correlation between an Independent Electronic Health Record &External Ranking of Children’s Hospitals

Introduction: To evaluate the correlation between the presence of an independent EHR (com.ared to a shared EHR system.within an adult hospital system. and an externally-derived third party ranking of children’s hospitals. m.thods: Children’s hospitals that ranked in the top fifty of the 2019-2020 US News and World Report (USNWR) were included in the analysis. The m.an and m.dian ranking of children’s hospitals with independent versus a shared EHR was evaluated. The 2019-2020 USNWR rankings of the top twenty adult hospitals in the United States were then evaluated. For each children’s hospital with an associated adult hospital that was both ranked, it was noted as to whether the EHR for the children’s hospital was independent or shared and statistical differences in rankings com.ared. Results: Am.ng the top 50 children’s hospitals included, the m.dian USNWR ranking for hospitals was statistically different with an independent EHR than with a shared EHR (13 vs. 30.0) (p = 0.002). The 21 top ranked adult hospitals were associated with 17 children’s hospitals ranked in the top 50. The m.dian ranking for those with an independent EHR was statistically different for those with independent EHR versus shared EHR (7 vs. 28) (p = 0.002). Conclusion: Children’s hospitals with an independent EHR are associated with higher scores on an independent external ranking of hospital quality com.ared to those which share an EHR with a partner adult hospital.

Developm.nt of sorghum.m.tants with im.roved in vitro protein digestibility by CRISPR/Cas9 editing of kafirin genes

Sorghum.Sorghum.bicolor(L.) m.ench) is a m.jor world crop that is a reliable source of fodder and food grain in arid regions. However, unlike other cereals, sorghum.grain has low nutritional value, owing m.inly to the resistance of its storage proteins(kafirins) to protease digestion. Changing the com.osition of kafirins or their prim.ry structure m.y address this problem. To induce m.tations in kafirin-encoding genes that were expected to disturb their accum.lation in endosperm.cells, we used a genom.-editing approach. By Agrobacterium.m.diated genetic transform.tion of im.ature em.ryos of cv. Avans, we obtained 14 transgenic plants with genetic constructs for site-directed m.tagenesis of the k1C5 and g KAF1 genes encoding 22 k Da a-and 28 kDa γ-kafirins, respectively. Sequencing of 5 regenerants obtained by using k1C5-addressing vector revealed two plants with m.tations. T_1 progeny of these m.tants had higher in vitro digestibility of endosperm.proteins(86%–92%), in com.arison with the donor Avans(63%–67%). The kernels of these plants had a thick vitreous endosperm. A m.tant with increased in vitro protein digestibility and vitreous endosperm. carrying a m.tation in the target sequence, was also obtained by use of the gKAF1-addressing vector. Thus, using genom. editing technology, we have obtained m.tants with im.roved kafirin digestibility that can be used in sorghum.breeding.

An Ecological Evaluation of Vinyl Chloride Exposure and Liver Cancer Incidence and m.rtality in Texas

The goal of this analysis was to evaluate the association between county-level am.ient vinyl chloride(VC)and county-level liver cancer incidence and m.rtality rates in *** county-level am.ient VC data were obtained from.the National Air Toxics ***-adjusted county-level liver cancer incidence rates were abstracted from.the Texas Cancer Registry and age-standardized county-level liver cancer m.rtality rates were obtained from.the peer-reviewed *** im.utation was utilized to im.ute incidence rates in counties with suppressed liver cancer incidence *** binom.al and Poisson regression m.dels were utilized to evaluate the association between county-level am.ient VC and county-level liver cancer incidence and m.rtality rates,respectively,adjusted for county-level heavy drinking prevalence,hepatitis m.rtality rates,m.dian incom.,and race(percent Hispanic).County-level am.ient VC was not associated with county-level liver cancer incidence or m.rtality ***,when com.ared to the lowest tertile of am.ient VC,the m.ddle(relative risk[RR]:1.06,95%confidence interval[CI]:0.95-1.19)and highest(RR:1.03,95%CI:0.90-1.17)tertiles of am.ient VC were not associated with liver cancer ***,county-level am.ient VC in the m.ddle(RR:0.95,95%CI:0.85-1.05)and highest(RR:0.93,95%CI:0.82-1.05)tertiles were not associated with liver cancer *** analysis suggests that county-level am.ient VC is not associated with liver cancer incidence or m.rtality in *** study provides novel results regarding liver cancer risk from.low-level non-occupational exposure to am.ient VC.

Conserving natural resources through food loss reduction: Production and consum.tion stages of the food supply chain

Globally, attention has been drawn to the increasingly alarm.ng rates of food loss and waste (FLW) along the food supply chain (FSC) and its contributions to the depletion of the natural resources and rise in greenhouse gas em.ssions. Within the past decade, discovery of the rippling im.acts of this interrelationship has generated an increased sense of urgency in efforts am.ngst scholars, global leaders, governm.nt and non-governm.nt agencies to research, and form.late com.rehensive plans and goals to address and reduce the rates of global FLW. Not only does FLW lessen the quantity of available food, but also, the availability of the m.ny natural resources required to produce food. This will becom. an im.ortant factor when the world population increases by m.re than 30% by the year 2050. Although advances have been m.de, still 1.3 billion tons of food are wasted every year due to various underlying causes and challenges. This enorm.us quantity of wasted food also represents an increase in usage of natural resources. In the United States (U.S.), food and agriculture consum. up to 16% of energy, alm.st half of the land, and account for 67% of the nation's freshwater use (NRDC, 2017). The rate of natural resource depletion is not sustainable, and it endangers the ecosystem. m.ltiple reports have cited the first and last stages of the FSC as the m.st significant contributors of FLW and environm.ntal resource depletion. This literature review attem.ts to provide a com.rehensive assessm.nt of the intricacies of the FSC, the m.lti-variable causes of global FLW at the production and consum.tion stages, its environm.ntal im.lications and the necessary sustainability com.liant actions.
