Objectives::To investig.te the prevalence of ACADM pathog.nic variants, c.985A>g.and c.199T>C, for medium chain acyl CoA dehydrog.nase deficiency (MCADD) in a healthy population in the southern reg.on of Brazil. Methods::This was an observational cross-sectional study with a convenience sampling.strateg.. The participants were recruited from the blood bank of the Hospital de Clínicas of Porto Aleg.e, Brazil. A total of 1000 healthy individuals from the state of Rio g.ande do Sul were included. g.notyping.for the c.199T>C and c.985A>g.variants was performed using.real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and the PCR-restriction frag.ent leng.h polymorphism (RFLP) technique, respectively. Individuals considered heterozyg.us for c.985A>g.were subjected to additional acylcarnitine profile analysis using.tandem mass spectrometry. Carrier frequency was obtained by calculating.the ratio of heterozyg.us individuals to the total number of individuals analyzed and reported with a 95% confidence interval. Allele and g.notype frequencies were calculated based on the Hardy-Weinberg.***::The c.985A>g.variant was detected as heterozyg.tes in three individuals (frequency of the heterozyg.us g.notype = 1:333, allele frequency= 0.0015, minimum frequency of MCADD= 1:444,444) whose acylcarnitine profiles were within normal limits. The c.199T>C variant was not ***::Considering.the small sample size and associated allelic heterog.neity with MCADD, these finding. are believed to denote the rarity or underdiag.osis of MCADD in southern Brazil. This study provides evidence for the need for further investig.tion to ascertain the contribution of these diseases to child morbidity and mortality in the country.

Could Low Hdl-Cholesterol Levels Be an Unvalued Predictor of Cancer Risk?: A Retrospective Case Study

Backg.ound: The relationship between serum lipid profile levels and cancer risk remained uncertain. Recently, it had been reported a sig.ificant inverse association between hig.-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL) and the risk of incident cancer that was independent of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL), ag. or sex. Objective: The aim of our study was to evaluate the behavior of HDL in cancer patients and in healthy population. Methods: We created a retrospectively search strateg. in the laboratory information system (LIS). We filtered and searched those patients with CEA within 5 - 20 ng.ml and any value of HDL and corroborated the presence of cancer (g.oup 1 (g.)) or not (g.oup 2 (g.)). Moreover, we searched a control g.oup (patients in outpatient oncolog. clinic) to observe the values of HDL. Comparisons and statistical log.stic reg.ession models were applied to link the levels of this biomarkers and cancer risk. Results: We examined 852 valid patients, median ag. 62 (50 - 73) years. Within the search strateg. g.oup, g. showed hig.est levels of HDL (54 (43 - 67) mg.dl) and lowest CEA levels (6.7 (5.7 - 8.4) ng.ml) comparing.with g.: HDL (47 (37 - 60) mg.dl) and the CEA (7.9 (6.2 - 10.9) ng.ml);p p r2: 0.092;p p = 0.001)] and CEA [OR: 1.115 (1.060 - 1.174), (p g. confirmed the inverse association of HDL levels between healthy populations and were diag.osed with cancer. Moreover, in a random population, patients with cancer presented lower HDL values compared to those without cancer. Therefore, it could demonstrate the possible positive predictive value of low HDL related to cancer risk.

目的：探讨雌激素减少与代谢综合征的相关性。方法：在基因库中搜索已知的对脂肪组织有影响的10个基因，筛选其启动子中可能存在的雌激素调控因子的基因。以不同月龄、不同基因型的卵泡刺激素受体敲除（FORKO）雌鼠为动物模型，测量其腹内白色脂肪组织（WAT）重量、体重，计算腹内WAT与体重的比率；口服葡萄糖（2g.kg.，测快速血糖（0，30，60，120min）行葡萄糖耐量实验；用组织学方法观察脂肪细胞、肝脏细胞的形态；用放射免疫法测定血清瘦素。结杲：①在7个肥胖相关基因中找到了可能的雌激素调控位点；②FORKO雌鼠于3月龄时出现肥胖，腹内WAT的重量明显高于野生型（P〈0.05）；③FORKO雌鼠随月龄的增长葡萄糖耐量逐渐减低（P〈0．05）；④FORKO雌鼠腹内WAT细胞在3月龄时体积较小，表现为增生（P〈0．05），而在8个月时表现为肥大（P〈0．05）；⑤FORKO雌鼠于8月龄时WAT细胞、棕色脂肪（BAT）细胞及肝细胞内均有大量脂酯颗粒堆积；⑥月龄3～5个月的FORKO雌鼠空腹的血清瘦素水平均明显高于野生雌鼠（P〈0．05）。结论：FORKO雌鼠因雌激素减少而表现出腹型肥胖、高血糖、高瘦素和胰岛素抵抗等代谢紊乱，提示雌激素减少可导致代谢综合征。

Natural forests and stands subjected to little to moderate human impact are continuously declining.worldwide and with these,their biodiversity and ecosystem *** Nothofag.s forests in the south of the South American continent are in a pristine state or only moderately impacted by *** g.azing.by livestock,in the past and still today often practiced in a non-sustainable way is,however,increasing.y under discussion to meet current environmental and socio-economic ***,we investig.te the reg.neration of Nothofag.s dombeyi,a keystone species of the Patag.nian Andes,in secondary forests in Arg.ntinian northern Patag.nia,particularly addressing.the role of disturbance throug. g.azing.by livestock at various *** test the hypothesis that the reg.neration of this tree species is favored by g.azing.impact and,thus,disturbance of the herb layer and soil *** support of our hypothesis,Nothofag.s dombeyi reg.neration was sig.ificantly hig.er in terms of individuals and heig.t classes in moderately g.azed *** analysis shows sig.ificant positive effects of moderate g.azing.pressure,herb layer cover,and the occurrence of bare soil on the reg.neration of Nothofag.s *** results show that an integ.ation of livestock g.azing.and forest reg.neration is possible and that ag.oforestry systems can be an adequate manag.ment option for stakeholders in the reg.on.A g.azing.manag.ment can also be part of a forest fire prevention ***,the reg.neration success and g.azing.pressure should be continuously monitored.

Laparoscopic approach in complicated diverticular disease

AIM: To analyze the results of laparoscopic colectomy in complicated diverticular ***: This was a retrospective cohort study conducted at an academic teaching.hospital. Data were collected from a database established earlier, which comprise of all patients who underwent laparoscopic colectomy for diverticular disease between 2000 and 2013. The series was divided into two g.oups that were compared: Patients with complicated disease(abscess, perforation, fistula, or stenosis)(g.) and patients underg.ing.surg.ry for recurrent diverticulitis(g.). Recurrent diverticulitis was defined as two or more episodes of diverticulitis reg.rdless of patient ag.. Data reg.rding.patient demog.aphics, comorbidities, prior abdominal operations, history of acute diverticulitis, classification of acute diverticulitis at index admission and intra and postoperative variables were extracted. Univariate analysis was performed in both ***: Two hundred and sixty patients were included: 28%(72 patients) belong.d to g. and 72%(188 patients) to g.. The mean ag. was 57(27-89) years. The averag. number of episodes of diverticulitis before surg.ry was 2.1(r 0-10); 43 patients had no previous inflammatory patholog.. There were sig.ificant differences between the two g.oups with respect to conversion rate and hospital stay(g. 18% vs g. 3.2%, P = 0.001; g.: 4.7 d vs g. 3.3 d, P g.oups(g. 2.7% vs g. 2.1%, P = 0.5). There were no differences in demog.aphic data(body mass index, American Society of Anesthesiolog. and previous abdominal surg.ry), operative time and intraoperative and postoperative complications between the g.oups. The mortality rate was 0.38%(1 patient), represented by a death secondary to septic shock in ***: The results support that the laparoscopic approach in any kind of complicated diverticular disease can be performed with low morbidity and acceptable conver
