Renin angiotensin system in liver diseases: Friend or foe?

In the last three decades,the understanding of the renin angiotensin system(RAS)has been changed by the discoveries of functional local systems,novel biologically active peptides,additional specific receptors,alternative pathways of angiotensin(Ang)?Ⅱ?generation,and new roles for enzymes and precursor components other than those in Ang?Ⅱ?*** this regard,the discovery that Ang-(1-7)opposes the pressor,proliferative,pro-fibrotic,and pro-inflammatory effects mediated by Ang?Ⅱ?has contributed to the realization that the RAS is composed of two *** first axis consists of the angiotensin-converting enzyme(ACE),with Ang?Ⅱ?as the end product,and the angiotensin type 1(AT1)receptor as the main effector mediating the biological actions of Ang?Ⅱ.The second axis results from ACE2-mediated hydrolysis of Ang?Ⅱ,leading to the production of Ang-(1-7),with the Mas receptor as the main effector conveying the vasodilatory,antiproliferative,anti-fibrotic,and anti-inflammatory effects of Ang-(1-7).Experimental and clinical studies have shown that both axes of the RAS may take part in the pathogenesis of liver *** this manuscript,we summarize the current evidence regarding the role of RAS in hepatic cirrhosis and its complications,including hemodynamic changes and hepatorenal *** therapeutic potential of the modulation of RAS molecules in liver diseases is also discussed.

Objective To evaluate the chemical composition and effects of Artemisia vulgaris(AV)hydroalcoholic extract(HEAV)on breast cancer cells(MCF-7 and SKBR-3),chronic myeloid leukemia(K562)and NIH/3T3 *** phytochemical analysis of HEAV was done by high-performance liquid chromatography-mass(HpLC)*** and cell death studies were performed using trypan blue and Annexin/FITC-7AAD,***-1(Fer-1)and necrostatin-1(Nec-1)were used to assess the mode of HEAV-induced cell death and acetoxymethylester(BApTA-AM)was used to verify the involvement of cytosolic calcium in this *** calcium measurements were made using *** HEAV decreased the viability of MCF-7,SKBR-3 and K562 cells(ppared to HEAV-exposed fibroblasts(pprimarily by late apoptosis and necrosis in assays using annexin V-FITC/7-AAD(pposed to HEAV alone(pppTA-AM,an intracellular Ca^(2+)chelator,decreased the number of non-viable cells treated with HEAV(ppartially dependent on lysosomal release of Ca^(2+).These effects may be related to artemisinin and caffeoylquinic acids,the main compounds identified in HEAV.

poly（lactic acid）（pLA）-containing nerve guidance conduits（NGCs） are currently being investigated for nerve repair as an alternative to autograft, which leads to permanent functional impairment in the territory innervated by the removed nerve. Combination of polymers modifies the physical properties of the conduits, altering their nerve-guidance properties. Conduits made from pLA-only or combined with other polymers have been used successfully for nerve repair, but their efficiency has not been compared. We compared the morphological and functional outcomes of peripheral nerve repair by using NGCs made of poly（lactic acid） and combined or not with polycaprolactone（pLA/pCL） or polyvinylpyrrolidone（pLA/pVp）. To assess the functional recovery, we employed a mechanical hyperalgesia analysis, sciatic functional index（SFI）, and electroneuromyography. The mechanical hyperalgesia analysis showed that the pLA group improved more rapidly than the pLA/pVp and pLA/pCL groups; similarly, in the electroneuromyography assay, the pLA group exhibited higher amplitude than the pLA/pCL and pLA/pVp groups. However, the SFI improvement rates did not differ among the groups. Morphologically, the pLA group showed more vascularization, while the nerve fiber regeneration did not differ among the groups. In conclusion, the pLA-only conduits were superior to the other NGCs tested for nerve repair.

Elevated nitric oxide and 3',5' cyclic guanosine monophosphate levels in patients with alcoholic cirrhosis

AIM: To evaluate whether serum levels of nitric oxide (NO ·) and plasma levels of cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMp) and total glutathione (GSH) are altered in patients with alcoholic cirrhosis and to examine their correlation with the severity of liver ***: Twenty-six patients with alcoholic liver cirrhosis were studied. Serum levels of NO · and plasma levels of cGMp and GSH were measured in 7 patients with compensated alcoholic cirrhosis (Child-pugh A) and 19 patients with advanced cirrhosis (Child-pugh B and C). The model for end-stage liver disease (MELD) score was evaluated. Sixteen healthy volunteers served as controls. Liver enzymes and creatinine levels were also ***: NO · and cGMp levels were higher in patients with Child-pugh B and C cirrhosis than in Child-pugh A cirrhosis or controls (NO ·: 21.70 ± 8.07 vs 11.70 ± 2.74; 21.70 ± 8.07 vs 7.26 ± 2.47 μmol/L, respectively; p p: 20.12 ± 6.62 vs 10.14 ± 2.78; 20.12 ± 6.62 vs 4.95 ± 1.21 pmol/L, respectively; p patients with Child-pugh B and C cirrhosis than in patients with Child-pugh A cirrhosis or controls (16.04 ± 6.06 vs 23.01 ± 4.38 or 16.04 ± 6.06 vs 66.57 ± 26.23 μmol/L, respectively; p p levels in all patients with alcoholic cirrhosis. A significant negative correlation between reduced glutathione/glutathione disulfide and the MELD score was found in all cirrhotic ***: Our results suggest a role for oxidative stress in alcoholic liver cirrhosis, which is more significant in decompensated patients with higher levels of NO ·and cGMp and lower GSH levels than in compensated and control patients. Altered mediator levels in decompensated patients may influence the hemodynamic changes in and progression of liver disease.

In the present experimental investigation,Al–3 wt%Cu and Al–3 wt%Cu–0.5 wt%Mg alloys castings are produced by a horizontal solidification technique with a view to examining the interrelationship among growth rate(GR),cooling rate(CR),secondary dendrite arm spacing(λ2),Vickers microhardness(HV),and corrosion behavior in a 0.5 M NaCl *** intermetallic phases of the as-solidified microstructures,that is,h-Al2Cu,S–Al2CuMg,and x-Al7Cu2 Fe,are subjected to a comprehensive characterization by using calculations provided by computational thermodynamics software,optical microscopy,and scanning electron microscopy/energy-dispersive ***,electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and potentiodynamic polarization tests have been applied to analyze the corrosion performance of samples of both alloys ***–petch-type equations are proposed to represent the HV dependence onλ*** is shown that the addition of Mg to the Al–Cu alloy has led to a considerable increase in HV;however,the Al–Cu binary alloy is shown to have lower corrosion current density(icorr)as well as higher polarization resistance as compared to the corresponding results of the Al–Cu–Mg ternary alloy.

Hematopoietic tumors are associated with diagnostic and therapeutic challenges and a poor prognosis. Furthermore, their pathophysiology in dogs is not well understood. Chronic lymphocytic leukemia has been rarely reported in golden retrievers, perhaps due to difficulties in diagnosis and care. An 8-year-old spayed female golden retriever was referred to our hospital with a 2-month history of fatigue, weakness, and selective appetite. The dog was diagnosed with chronic lymphocytic leukemia based on blood smear evaluation. Despite treatment, the dog deteriorated and the owners opted for euthanasia. Histopathological examination revealed atypical lymphocytes in the spleen, extramedullary hematopoiesis in the spleen and liver, bone marrow depletion, moderate neutrophilic myocarditis, and acute renal tubular necrosis. In an immunohistochemical panel, cells in the spleen and bone marrow were positive for anti-CD20, anti-CD45, anti-CD3, anti-IBA-1, anti-Ki67, anti-MUM-1, and anti-pAX-5. In conclusion, the leukemia diagnosis was confirmed through reactive histiocytosis, marked extramedullary hematopoiesis, and other clinical and laboratory findings. Herein, we report a case of chronic lymphocytic leukemia in a female dog with clinical, laboratory, and necroscopy findings.

Ethyl and butyl acetate oxidation over manganese oxides

Mangenese oxides were synthesized using two new methods,a novel solvent‐free reaction and a reflux technique,that produced cryptomelane‐type products(K‐OMS‐2).Oxides were also synthesized using conventional methods and all specimens were applied to the oxidation of ethyl acetate and butyl acetate,acting as models for the volatile organic compounds found in industrial *** catalysts were also characterized using N2adsorption,X‐ray diffraction,scanning electron microscopy,temperature programmed reduction and X‐ray photoelectron *** of the manganese oxides was found to be very active during the oxidation of both esters to CO2,and the synthesis methodology evidently had a significant impact on catalytic *** K‐OMS‐2nanorods synthesized by the solvent‐free method showed higher activity than K‐OMS‐2materials prepared by the reflux technique,and samples with cryptomelane were more active than those prepared by the conventional *** catalyst with the highest performance also exhibited good stability and allowed90%conversion of ethyl and butyl acetate to CO2at213and202°C,*** differences in the catalyst performance were observed,clearly indicating that K‐OMS‐2nanorods prepared by the solvent‐free reaction were better catalysts for the selected VOC oxidations than the mixtures of manganese oxides traditionally obtained with conventional synthesis *** superior performance of the K‐OMS‐2catalysts might be related to the increased average oxidation state of the manganese in these *** correlations between the catalytic performance and the surface chemical properties were also identified,hig-hlighting the K‐OMS‐2properties associated with the enhanced catalytic performance of the materials.?2018,Dalian Institute of Chemical physics,Chinese Academy of *** by Elsevier *** rights reserved.
