Influence of PVD-duplex-treated, Bionic Surface Structures on the Wetting Behavior for Sheet-Bulk Metal Forming Tools

Bionic surface structures, inspired by the flora, were developed for Sheet-Bulk Metal Forming （SBMF） in order to locally control the friction condition by adjusting the wetting behavior. Five bionic structures were micromilled on ASP 2023 in annealed as well as hardened and tempered conditions. Subsequently, the structured surfaces were plasma-nitrided and coated with a CrA1N thin film. The influence of the treatment method on the structural geometry was investigated with the aid of a scanning electron microscope and 3D-profilometer. The wetting behaviors of water and deep drawing oil （Berufluid ST6007） on bionic surfaces were evaluated using contact angle measurements. The resulting micro-milled structures exhibit an almost identical shape as their bionic models. However, the roughness of the structured surfaces is influenced by the microstructure. The combination of plasma-nitriding and Physical Vapor Deposition （PVD） leads to an increase in roughness. All bionic struc- tures possess higher contact angles than that of the unstructured surfaces when wetted by water. This can be explained by the fact that the structural elevations block the spreading. When the bionic surfaces are wetted by deep drawing oil, the lubricant spreads in the structural cavities, leading to smaller contact angles. Furthermore, the anisotropy of the structure has an influence on the wetting behavior.

AIM： To investigate the relationship between the -765G 〉 C COX-2 polymorphism and the development of different gastric lesions： atrophy or intestinal metaplasia and gastric adenocarcinoma. METHODS： A cross-sectional study was performed involving 320 Portuguese individuals （210 without evidence of neoplastic disease, 73 patients with gastric adenocarcinomas and 37 with atrophy or intestinal metaplasia） using a PCR-RFLP method.RESULTS： -765C allele was overrepresented in the patients with gastric adenocarcinoma （51%） when compared either with the control group （38%） or patients with atrophy or intestinal metaplasia （27%）. Callele was found to be very common in our population （0.22）, and a multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed nearly 3-fold increased risk for the progression to gastric adenocarcinoma in patients with atrophy or intestinal metaplasia carrying the -765C allele （OR = 2.67, 95% CI = 1.03-6.93; P = 0.04）.CONCLUSION： -765C carrier status should be considered as another susceptibility marker for gastric adenocarcinoma development in patients with atrophy or intestinal metaplasia.

Determination of functional prognosis in hospitalized patients following an intensive care admission

AIM To investigate the factors associated with the functional progress of hospitalized patients following an intensive care *** Retrospective study including data from a cohort of 198 hospitalized patients following an intensive care admission and not requiring mechanical ventilation in a single tertiary referral hospital. A generalized linear model was used to identify the main effects of clinical and demographic variables on the outcomes of functionality(KATZ Index of Independence in Activities of Daily Living) and muscle strength(MRC Scale). The covariates identified as independent predictors were analysed using the receiver operating characteristic curves. The analysis differentiated the periods in the intensive care unit(ICU), in the Ward(WARD) and the total time of hospital stay(TOT).RESULTS Considering the functional outcome(ΔKATZ), the variables that significantly contributed to the model(P nated the ΔKATZICU. The variables age(AUC = 0.712), KATZ in ICU(AUC = 0.590) and on ward admission(AUC = 0.746), and MRC on ward admission(AUC = 0.721) were discriminative for ΔKATZWARD. For ΔKATZTOT the variables KATZ on ICU admission(AUC = 0.621) and TLS(AUC = 0.617) were discriminative. For ΔMRCICU the variables SAPSIII(AUC = 0.661) and MRC on ICU admission(AUC = 0.653) were discriminative. MRC on ICU(AUC = 0.681) and ward admission(AUC = 0.553) were discriminative for ΔMRCWARD. TLS(AUC = 0.649) and MRC on ward admission(AUC = 0.696) discriminative for the Δ*** Specific functional, clinical and demographical variables at ICU admission are associated with the functional prognosis during the hospitalization period.

We report the case of an 84-year-old female who had a partial gastrectomy with Billroth-Ⅱ anastomosis 24 years ago for a benign peptic ulcer who now presented an acute pancreatitis secondary to an afferent loop syndrome. The syndrome was caused by a gallstone that migrated through a cholecystoenteric fistula. This is the first description in the literature of a biliary stone causing afferent loop syndrome.

AIM： To study the role of an insertion/deletion polymorphism in the pepsinogen C （PGC） gene, an effective marker for terminal differentiation of the stomach mucosa, in the susceptibility to the development of gastric lesions. METHODS： The study was performed with 99 samples of known gastric lesions and 127 samples without evidence of neoplastic disease. PCR was employed and the 6 polymorphic alleles were amplified： Allele 1 （510 bp）, Allele 2 （480 bp）, Allele 3/4 （450/460 bp）, Allele 5 （400 bp） and Allele 6 （310 bp）. RESULTS： Our results revealed that Allele 6 carriers seemed to have protection against the development of any gastric lesion （OR = 0.34; P 〈 0.001）, non-dysplastic lesions associated with gastric adenocarcinoma such as atrophy or intestinal metaplasia （OR = 0.28; P 〈 0.001） or invasive GC （OR = 0.39; P = 0.004）. CONCLUSION： Our study reveals that the Allele 6 carrier status has a protective role in the development of gastric lesions, probably due to its association with higher expression of PGC. Moreover, the frequency of Allele 6 carriers in the control group is far higher than that obtained in Asian populations, which might represent a genetic gap between Caucasian and Asian populations.

Acute gastric mucosal injury is a common disorder of the gastrointestinal tract and the search for new therapeutics is ongoing. The aim of this study is to update and expand the information related to the most widely used rat models of acute gastric ulcer, the ethanol‐induced ulcer and the indomethacin‐induced ulcer. These two models are compared in terms of macroscopic and microscopic features. Experimentally, ethanol was given orally in a single dose and indomethacin was subcutaneously injected into male Wistar rats. After ulcerative challenges, the stomachs were removed and visually inspected. Anti‐ulcerative drugs were used to validate the models. Histological analysis of the stomachs determined the microscopic score. The methodology used for model evaluation applied to macroscopic and microscopic gastric lesions. With these methods it was possible to induce lesions in the gastric mucosa. Microscopic evaluation permitted assessment of the inflammatory and apoptotic impact in the mucosa not observable by macroscopic evaluation. Groups of animals were treated with two standard drugs: sulcralfate suspension or lansoprazole solution. Both drugs reduced macroscopic and microscopic lesions, particularly the hemorrhagic ones. Both models induced acute gastric mucosal injury and no single evaluation method can address all the aspects of the pathology of gastric lesions. As a complement to macroscopic evaluation, microscopy appears to be a relevant tool to selectively identify specific aspects of the development of mucosal injury, quantify the extent of lesions, and contribute to an appropriate interpretation of results. The score systems established here offer a reliable method for testing antiulcer drugs.

AIM: To compare the effects of chronic supplementationwith l-carnitine （LCT） and dl-carnitine （DLC） on am-monia toxicity and hepatic metabolism. The Laboratory for Intense Lasers(L2I) is a research centre in optics and lasers dedicated to experimental research in high intensity laser science and technology and laser plasma interaction. Currently the laboratory is undergoing an upgrade with the goal of increasing the versatility of the laser systems available to the users, as well as increasing the pulse repetition rate. In this paper we review the current status of the laser research and development programme of this facility, namely the upgraded capability and the recent progress towards the installation of an ultrashort, diode-pumped OPCPA laser system.
