Moroccan medicinal plants exhibit several pharmacological properties such as antimicrobial,anticancer,antidiabetic,analgesic,and anti-inflammatory effects,which are related to the presence of numerous bioactive compounds,including phenolic acids,flavonoids,and terpenoids.In the present review,we systematically evaluate previously published reports on the anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects of Moroccan medicinal plants.The in vitro investigations revealed that Moroccan medicinal plants inhibit several enzymes related to inflammatory processes,whereas in vivo studies noted significant anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects as demonstrated using different experimental models.Various bioactive compounds exhibiting in vitro and in vivo anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects,with diverse mechanisms of action,have been identified.Some plants and their bioactive compounds reveal specific secondary metabolites that possess important anti-inflammatory effects in clinical investigations.Our review proposes the potential applications of Moroccan medicinal plants as sources of anti-inflammatory and analgesic agents.

Moroccan Phosphogypsum Use in Road Engineering:Materials and Structure Optimization

Morocco produces annually large quantities of phosphogypsum(PG),which permanent stacking rises technical and environmental constraints.However,the valorization of this coproduct in civil engineering and especially in roads building,is a promising solution within a circular economy frame.A first experimental one-kilometer-long pilot,incorporating four different PG based formulations with a 7%cement addition,built at Safi in 2017,allowed positive mechanical assessment(by deflector)and environmental one(by leaching test).In order to further evaluate PG use as road material,our experimental approach focuses here on optimizing material mixtures-made of phosphogypsum(maximum content desired)treated with cement(to be minimized so as to reduce the cost)and sand or steel slag as granular corrector-to meet mechanical requirements of a road base material.We first identified and characterized phosphogypsum produced at the Jorf Lasfar plant and other materials used.Design of experiment is used for modeling desired physical and mechanical responses and to establish domains meeting the required criteria for using the mixture material either as road subgrade layer or foundation layer.In addition,through a parametric study,we evaluated the effects of traffic level,soil bearing capacity and mechanical performance of treated phosphogypsum mixtures on pavement design for three different pavement structures(mixed,reverse and structure with treated sub-base)and determined that the best to adopt for maximizing PG recycling is the pavement structure with subbase treated with hydraulic binder.

In this study we quantify and analyze different components of nocturnal losses from a heated greenhouse with the presence of vegetation for typical winter weather conditions in Marrakesh-Morocco,using a non linear model,based on the greenhouse heat and mass balance.It was found that 12% of the total input heat was dissipate as a sensible and latent leakage losses,66% was lost by convective exchange through air-inner cover.This gain of energy at the inner-cover is dissipated at the outer-cover by radiation(66%)and convection(34%).This results point toward some practical measures to reduce heat losses:increasing air tightness,using covering materials with low-emissivity in the long wave band or putting up an external thermal curtain should provide significant energy savings.

Efficient Feature Selection and ML Algorithm for Accurate Diagnostics

Machine learning algorithms have been deployed in numerous optimization,prediction and classification problems.This has endeared them for application in fields such as computer networks and medical diagnosis.Although these machine learning algorithms achieve convincing results in these fields,they face numerous challenges when deployed on imbalanced dataset.Consequently,these algorithms are often biased towards majority class,hence unable to generalize the learning process.In addition,they are unable to effectively deal with high-dimensional datasets.Moreover,the utilization of conventional feature selection techniques from a dataset based on attribute significance render them ineffective for majority of the diagnosis applications.In this paper,feature selection is executed using the more effective Neighbour Components Analysis(NCA).During the classification process,an ensemble classifier comprising of K-Nearest Neighbours(KNN),Naive Bayes(NB),Decision Tree(DT)and Support Vector Machine(SVM)is built,trained and tested.Finally,cross validation is carried out to evaluate the developed ensemble model.The results shows that the proposed classifier has the best performance in terms of precision,recall,F-measure and classification accuracy.

Biological Characterisation and Pathogenicity of a Pasteurella multocida Isolate from Sheep in Morocco

In this study,55 suspected pasteurellosis clinical cases from different provinces of Morocco were investigated.Molecular analysis revealed that 47%of samples were positive for Pasteurella multocida,all typed as serogroup A,and 11%positive for Mannheimia heamolytica.Eight isolates were recovered from 26 P.multocida positive samples,and characterized by biochemical and molecular typing methods.Among these isolates,two strains(S13 and S14)were selected for genes(RNA16S and rpoB)sequence analysis and virulence study in mice,guinea pigs and sheep.Phylogeny study showed similarities of both S14 and S13 isolates with strains from other species.In laboratory animals,the strain S14 was more virulent than S13 and induced severe illness in sheep.The high mortality of infected mice suggests that this model may represent an alternative for testing pathogenicity and vaccine efficacy.

Among the models used to assess water erosion,the RUSLE model is commonly used.Policy makers can act on cover(C-factor)and conservation practice(P-factor)to reduce erosion,with less costly action on soil surface characteristics.However,the widespread use of vegetation indices such as NDVI does not allow for a proper assessment of the C-factor in drylands where stones,crusted surfaces and litter strongly influence soil protection.Two sub-factors of C,canopy cover(CC)and soil cover(SC),can be assessed from phytoecological measurements that include gravel-pebbles cover,physical mulch,annual and perennial vegetation.This paper introduces a method to calculate the C-factor from phytoecological data and,in combination with remote sensing and a geographic information system(GIS),to map it over large areas.A supervised classification,based on field phytoecological data,is applied to radiometric data from Landsat-8/OLI satellite images.Then,a C-factor value,whose SC and CC subfactors are directly derived from the phytoecological measurements,is assigned to each land cover unit.This method and RUSLE are implemented on a pilot region of 3828 km^(2) of the Saharan Atlas,composed of rangelands and steppe formations,and intended to become an observatory.The protective effect against erosion by gravel-pebbles(50%)is more than twice that of vegetation(23%).The C-factor derived from NDVI(0.67)is higher and more evenly distributed than that combining these two contributions(0.37 on average).Finally,priorities are proposed to decision-makers by crossing the synthetic map of erosion sensitivity and a decision matrix of management priorities.

Shaping ability of thermomechanically treated files in simulated S-shaped root canals

Aim: the aim of this study was to investigate the shaping ability of thermomechanically treated files manufactured by twisting(Twisted files)and compare it to conventional rotary system (K3, Sybron Endo, Orange, CA) in S-shaped canals, including formation of ledges, zipping, elbow, outer widening, danger zone, perforation and file deformation. Materials & Methods: Forty S-Shaped canals in resin blocks were randomly divided into 2 groups of 20 each. Pre-instrumentation images of the canals were taken via a digital camera and superimposed on images taken after preparation with TF and K3 systems to apical size of 25/06 and 30/06. Canal aberrations were measured from the superimposed image at five levels using AutoCAD system. Fisher exact test and Mann Whitney test were used for analysis of the data. Results: the incidence of zipping, elbow and apical transportation was significantly lower in the TF group (P = 0.04). Generally the incidence of aberration increased when the apical size increased to 30/0.06 regardless of the file system. Significant file deformation was evident in the TF after single use (P ? 0.001). Conclusion: Under the conditions of this study, TF manufactured by new technique performed better than K3 systems when used up to size 25/06 in simulated S-shaped canals. Clinical significance: The flexibility of thermomechanically treated files is beneficial in canals with multiple curvatures;however, attention should be paid to the instrument taper and final apical size of the preparation.

Prevalence of substance use among moroccan adolescents and association with academic achievement

AIM: To investigate rates of drug and alcohol use and their association with academic performance in Moroccan youth. METHODS: An adapted version of the European School Project on Alcohol and Other Drugs survey was administered to 2139 10^(th)-12^(th) graders in 36 Moroccan public high schools. Two multiple logistic regressions were completed, one for male and one for female subjects. Grade average was used as a two-part outcome variable, and drug use was used as a four-level categorical independent variable. Parents' education levels and socioeconomic status were included as covariates. RESULTS: Of the subjects, 181 girls(16%) and 390 boys(40%) reported ever having used alcohol, hashish, or psychotropic drugs. Girls who had used any of those substances in the past 30 d demonstrated an adjusted odds ratio(AOR) of 2.62(95%CI: 1.31-5.22) of having average or below-average grades, and those with any lifetime use showed an AOR of 1.72(95%CI: 1.07-2.77). Among the boys, use in the past 30 d was associated with an AOR of 2.08(95%CI: 1.33-3.24) of average or below average grades, and use in the last 12 mo with an AOR of 1.74(95%CI: 1.00-3.05). Any lifetime use among male and previous 12 mo use among female subjects were not significantly associated with academic achievement.CONCLUSION: Among Moroccan adolescents, drug use is substantially different between boys and girls. In both genders, lower academic achievement was associated with alcohol, hashish, or psychotropic drug use in the last 30 d.

Total Hip Replacement in Young Adults Less Than Fifty Year Old: Our Experience

Background: We report a retrospective study of 47 total prosthesis of hip put in place among the young adult of less than fifty years in the service of Traumatology and Orthopedics at the Wing IV of the CHU Ibn Rochd of Casablanca, over a period from January 2008 to March 2014, with an average rate of decline of 42 months. Results: The deliberate group of 43 patients (47 hips including 4 bilateral) consisted of 26 women, either 60, 47% and 17 men, either 39, 53%. The average age of our patients was 36 years. In our series, the predominant etiology has been conducted for the indication of the hip replacement was the aseptic osteonecrosis of the femoral head which has represented 31.91%. With regards to the choice of implants, 85% of PTH were non-cemented, the cemented PTH has been used in 15% of cases. The Friction Torque metal/polyethylene was used in all cases. The functional outcome was appreciated by the rating of Merle of Aubigne before and after arthroplasty. The average rate of decline of 42 months, and the results were generally satisfactory. They were excellent in 27.78% of cases, very good in 19.44% of cases and good in 44.44% of cases. The results on the Pain were remarkable: the rating of the pain going 2.8 in pre-operative at 5.6 at the latest decline. The results on the walking and mobility were also good. It was noted as a complication: 4 cases of prosthetic dislocation, 1 case of aseptic descellement bipolar, 2 cases of early sepsis on hardware, 3 cases of paralysis of the sciatic external popliteal and 4 cases of periprothetiques ossification. In total, 5 total prosthesis of hip were occasions. The young age does not seem to be an obstacle to the prosthetic surgery. Conclusion: However, a major question remains concerning the distant future of these prostheses in young active subjects, because they will be submitted for many years in a job which can cause the descellement of prosthetic parts.

Assessment of the Evolution and Socio-Economic Impacts of Extreme Rainfall Events in October 2019 over the East Africa

This study aimed at establishing and quantifying the evolution and socio-economic impacts of extreme rainfall events in October 2019. The study also focused on ascertaining the extent to which the Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) and the el Ni?o Southern Oscillation (ENSO) influenced anomalous rainfall over East Africa (EA) in October 2019. It employed Singular Value Decomposition (SVD) methods to analyze inter-annual variability of EA rainfall and the Sea Surface Temperature Anomalies (SSTA) over the Indian and Pacific Ocean with a focus on October to December 2019 rainfall season. The SVD analysis enabled the exploration of the leading modes from the mean monthly rainfall and SSTs leading to the determination of the likely influence of the IOD and ENSO respectively. The first SVD coupled modes, which dominate the co-variability between the October rainfall over the EA domain, and SSTA over the Indian and Pacific Oceans based on 1981 to 2010 climatology indicate the monopole positive co-variability with rainfall over the entire EA domain. The corresponding spatial pattern for the SSTA over the Indian Ocean (IO) recaptures the positive IOD event while the central equatorial Pacific Ocean (i.e., over Ni?o 3.4 region) reveals a monopole positive loading, a typical signal for the warm phase of ENSO. The positive rainfall anomaly over the EA during October is found to be associated with either the IOD event or ENSO condition events independently or in phase. However, the inter-annual variability between October rainfall over EA and ENSO reveals a moderate relationship (r = 0.4212) while a robust association (r = 0.7084) is revealed with IOD. Comparatively, the October 2019 rainfall anomaly peaks the highest in history over the EA and was found to be coupled with highest positive IOD event in record.
