In recent years,the contamination of water by arsenic reached alarming levels in many countries of the world,attracting the interest of many researchers engaged in testing methodologies able to remove this harmful *** important aspect that must be taken into consideration is the possibility to find arsenic in different chemical forms which could require different approaches for its *** this aim,a speciation analysis appears to be crucial for better understanding the behavior of arsenic species in aqueous solutions,especially in presence of compounds with marked chelating *** can be identified as good sequestering agents and,at this purpose,this manuscript intends to investigate the interaction of As(Ⅲ)with three phosphonic acids derived from nitrilotriacetic acid(NTA)by replacements of one(N-(Phosphonomethyl)iminodiacetic acid,NTAP),two(N,N-Bis-(phosphonomethyl)glycine,NTA2P)and three(Nitrilotri(methylphosphonic acid),NTA3P)carboxylic groups with the same number of phosphonate *** in-depth potentiometric and calorimetric investigation allowed to determine speciation models featured by simple ML,MLH i and ML(OH)species.A complete thermodynamic characterization of the systems is reported together with the definition of coordination mode by mass spectrometry *** the light of the speciation models,the possibility of using these ligands in arsenic removal techniques was assessed by determining the pL 0.5(the concentration of ligand able to remove the 50%of metal ion present in trace).All ligands show a good sequestering ability,in particular under the conditions of fresh water,following the trend NTA3P>NTA2P>NTAP.

Probability distributions of arsenic in soil from brownfield sites in Beijing （China）： statistical characterization of the background populations and implications for site assessment studies

A probabilistic analysis was performed on soil arsenic concentration data from 4 brownfield sites at Beijing （Chaoyang and Haidian districts）, involved in environmental assessment studies. The available data sets were processed to provide a statistical characterization of the background populations and differentiate ＂anomalous data＂ from the natural range of variation of arsenic concentrations in soil. The site-specific background distributions and the existing wide-scale background values defined for the Beijing area were compared, discussing related implications for the definition of metal contamination soil screening levels （SSLs） in site assess- ment studies. The statistical analysis of As data sets discriminated site-specific background populations, encompassing 88% to 94% of the sample data, from oufliers values, associated with either subsoil natural enrichments or possible anthropogenic releases. Upper Baseline Concentration （UBC） limits （＋ 2σ level）, including most of the site-specific metal background variability, were derived based on the statistical characterization of the background populations. Sites in the Chaoyang South district area had UBC values in the range 10.4-12.6mg·kg^-1. These ranges provide meaningful SSL values to be adopted for As in local site assessment studies. Using the wide-scale background value for the Beijing area would have erroneously classified most of the areas in the subject sites as potentially contaminated.

High-spin states in 184Au have been populated via the 149Sm(29Si, 4nγ) 184Au reaction at a beam energy of 140 MeV. Three- or higher-fold γ-ray coincidences have been measured using the multidetector array of GASP. A rotational band built on the 11- oblate πh-111/2 vi-113/2 structure has been newly observed, similar to those reported in 186-194Au. This result extends the knowledge of shape coexistence to the currently lightest odd-odd Au isotope.

Nitrogen release from Slow-release Fertilizers in Soils with different Microbial Activities

Soil microbial activity is recognized as an important factor affecting nitrogen (N) release from slow-release fertilizers. However,studies on the effect of size and activity of soil microflora on fertilizer degradation have provided contrasting results. To date, no clear relationships exist between soil microbial activity and the release of N from slow-release fertilizers. Hence, the aim of this study was to better understand such relationships by determining the release of N from three slow-release fertilizers in soils with different microbial activities. Soils were amended with urea-formaldehyde (UF), isobutylidene diurea (IBdU), and crotonylidene diurea (CdU). Urea, a soluble fertilizer, was used as the control. Fertilized soil samples were placed in a leaching system, and the release of N was determined by measuring ammonium-N and nitrate-N concentrations in leachates during 90 d of incubation. Non-linear regression was used to fit N leaching rate to a first-order model. In all the treated soils, N was released in the order: urea (89%–100%) > IBdU (59%–94%) >UF (46%–73%) > CdU (44%–56%). At the end of incubation, N released from CdU did not differ (P > 0.05) among soils. On the contrary, UF and IBdU released significantly lower (P r microbial activity and lower *** rate constant (K_0) for UF was lower (P r pH. Taken together, our results indicated that soil microbial size and microbial activity had a marginal effect on fertilizer mineralization.

Effect of sewage sludge and sugarcane bagasse biochar on soil properties and sugar beet production

recently, biochar has shown to be an alternative to waste disposal and a source of nutrients, acting as a soil amendment. The effects of two types of biochar on soil properties and sugar beet production as well as potential for carbon(C) sequestration were evaluated: biochar produced from sewage sludge(SB) and biochar produced from a 1:1 mixture of sewage sludge and sugarcane bagasse(MB). A greenhouse pot experiment was conducted using a sandy loam soil from the Brazilian savanna under treatments of MB applications at 2.5%, 5.0%, 7.5%, and 10.0%, SB application at 5.0%, and a conventional fertilization(CF) using lime and mineral fertilizers, with no fertilization as a control. After incubation for 45 d, seedlings were transplanted into each pot and cultivated for 55 d. Biochar characterization showed that pyrolysis reduced the biomass volume drastically, but concentrated the trace elements per unit of biochar weight. The MB treatments increased soil total C(by 27.8%) and pH(by 0.6), reduced the concentrations of nutrients, except for potassium(K), and chromium(Cr), and did not significantly alter lead(Pb) and cadmium(Cd) concentrations. results of stable isotopes showed that all biochar treatments increased the total soil C stock and stability, suggesting a potential for application in C sequestration, and improved overall soil fertility. However, the biochar treatments also increased the concentrations of trace elements in the soil and plants. The sugar beet yields at 10.0% MB and 5.0% SB corresponded to 55%and 29% of the yield obtained in the CF treatment, respectively. These results may be due to biochar nutrients not being bioavailable when required by plants or to biochar nutrient adsorption.

delirium is the most frequent manifestation of acute brain dysfunction in intensive care unit(ICU).Although antipsychotics are widely used to treat this serious complication,recent evidence has emphasized that these agents did not reduce ICU delirium(ICU-d)prevalence and did not improve survival,length of ICU or hospital stay after its *** note,no pharmacological strategy to prevent or treat delirium has been identified,so *** this scenario,new scientific evidences are urgently *** on specific ICU-d subgroups,or focused on different clinical settings,and studies on medications other than antipsychotics,such as dexmedetomidine or melatonin,may represent interesting fields of *** the meantime,because there is some evidence that ICU-d can be effectively prevented,the literature suggests strengthening all the strategies aimed at prevention through no-pharmacological approaches mostly focused on the correction of risk *** more appropriate strategy useful to treat established delirium remains the use of antipsychotics managed by choosing the right doses after a careful case-by-case *** the evidence regarding the use of dexmedetomidine is still conflicting and sparse,this drug offers interesting perspectives for both ICU-d prevention and *** paper aims to provide an overview of current pharmacological approaches of evidence-based medicine *** state of the art of the on-going clinical research on the topic and perspectives for future research are also addressed.
