background: Uterine leiomyomas are the commonest tumors of the genital tract. Growth factors seem to be implicated in the development of leiomyoma. Objective: To determine the insulin receptor (IR) tyrosine kinase activity-phosphorylation of exogenous substrate poly(Glu 4: Tyr 1)-and insulin receptor substrate 1 expression in normal myometrium and leiomyoma. Study design: The study group consisted of 12 women with leiomyoma undergoing routine hysterectomy. Samples of leiomyoma and adjacent normal myometrium were obtained at the time of operation. Plasma membrane fractions were prepared and samples were incubated with and without insulin and incubated with exogenous substrate poly(Glu 4: Tyr 1). IRS-1 expression was studied in the whole lysate via Western blotting using specific antibodies. Data were analyzed using Student’s t test. Results: The phosphorylation of the exogenous substrate poly(Glu 4: Tyr 1) in myometrium (1.566 ±0.177) and in leiomyoma (1.98 ±0.612) were similar (P = 0.774). The IRS-1 levels in myometrium(0.190±0.022) and in leiomyoma (0.226 ±0.022) were not different (P = 0.184). Conclusions: There was no difference in IR tyrosine kinase activity (phosphoryla-tion of exogenous substrate) and IRS-1 expression between normal myometrium and leiomyomata. Other steps in the insulin signaling cascade require further study to investigate the role of insulin receptor in leiomyomata.

Drought is a major environmental factor limiting cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) productivity worldwide and projected climate changes could increase their negative effects in the future. Thus, targeting the molecular mechanisms correlated with drought tolerance without reducing productivity is a challenge for plant breeding. In this way, we evaluated the effects of water deficit progress on AtDREb2A-CA transgenic cotton plant responses, driven by the stress-inducible rd29 promoter. besides shoot and root morphometric traits, gas exchange and osmotic adjustment analyses were also included. Here, we present how altered root traits shown by transgenic plants impacted on physiological acclimation responses when submitted to severe water stress. The integration of AtDREb2A-CA into the cotton genome increased total root volume, surface area and total root length, without negatively affecting shoot morphometric growth parameters and nor phenotypic evaluated traits. Additionally, when compared to wild-type plants, transgenic plants (17-T0 plants and its progeny) highlighted a gradual pattern of phenotypic plasticity tosome photosynthetic parameters such as photosynthetic rate and stomatal conductance with water deficit progress. Transgene also promoted greater shoot development and root robustness (greater and deeper root mass) allowing roots to grow into deeper soil layers. The same morpho-physiological trend was observed in the subsequent generation (17.6-T2). Our results suggest that the altered root traits shown by transgenic plants are the major contributors to higher tolerance response, allowing the AtDRE2A-CA-cotton plants to maintain elevated stomatal conductance and assimilate rates and, consequently, reducing their metabolic costs involved in the antioxidant responses activation. nonlinear optics has been the subject of intensive research because of its wide applications in field of photonics, nanophotonics [1] and optoelectroncs such as optical signal processing, broad-band optical communications, integrated optics, optical sensing, optical poling, optical limiting, optical computing etc. A common problem in the laser technology is the protection of human eye and optical sensors from the damaging effects of high-energy light. Passive optical limiters can be the solution of this kind of *** optical materials with large coefficients of TPA and nonlinear refraction are of prime importance in optical limiting applications. Recently the C_ 60-TTF have attracted much attention because of their three-dimensional π-electron conjugated systems which makes them promising as new limiting materials [2]. Two-photon absorption, second harmonic generation (SHG), detection of phase transition using photoinduced nonlinear effects and illustration of new system for optical recording and erasing of holograms under weak laser illumination will be discussed. In other hand a series of new Donor-π-Acceptor ruthenium acetylide systems built around thiophene-based π-conjugating spacers has been developed and studied, in terms of the oligothienyl chain length. Comparison of the linear and third-order nonlinear optical properties of these Donor-π-Acceptor chromophores shows that the elongation of the spacer and introduction of a double bond in this spacer produces a considerable bathochromic shift of the absorption maximum together with a dramatic enhancement of the molecular cubic hyperpolarizability in these systems. Finally, acoustically induced second harmonic generation (AISHG) has been observed for thin films of these complexes incorporated in PMMA matrices, which reaches values among the highest, reported so far.

nonlinear optics has been the subject of intensive research because of its wide applications in field of photonics, nanophotonics [1] and optoelectroncs such as optical signal processing, broad-band optical communications, integrated optics, optical sensing, optical poling, optical limiting, optical computing etc. A common problem in the laser technology is the protection of human eye and optical sensors from the damaging effects of high-energy light. Passive optical limiters can be the solution of this kind of *** optical materials with large coefficients of TPA and nonlinear refraction are of prime importance in optical limiting applications. Recently the C_ 60-TTF have attracted much attention because of their three-dimensional π-electron conjugated systems which makes them promising as new limiting materials [2]. Two-photon absorption, second harmonic generation （SHG）, detection of phase transition using photoinduced nonlinear effects and illustration of new system for optical recording and erasing of holograms under weak laser illumination will be discussed. In other hand a series of new Donor-π-Acceptor ruthenium acetylide systems built around thiophene-based π-conjugating spacers has been developed and studied, in terms of the oligothienyl chain length. Comparison of the linear and third-order nonlinear optical properties of these Donor-π-Acceptor chromophores shows that the elongation of the spacer and introduction of a double bond in this spacer produces a considerable bathochromic shift of the absorption maximum together with a dramatic enhancement of the molecular cubic hyperpolarizability in these systems. Finally, acoustically induced second harmonic generation （AISHG） has been observed for thin films of these complexes incorporated in PMMA matrices, which reaches values among the highest, reported so far.

Sepsis after Administering an Intramuscular Iron Injection in the Arm of an Elder Patient with Multiple Comorbidities: A Case Report

background: Skin reactions and musculoskeletal injuries caused by intramuscular injection are an increased risk for skin and soft tissue infections and may culminate in sepsis. Objective: To describe the history of an elderly patient who developed a lesion in her right arm after home administration of intramuscular iron injection in this arm and its outcome. Methods: This is a case report of a patient who participated in a study in an intensive care unit. Results: This study describes a 65-year-old patient with multiple comorbidities who was admitted to the hospital complaining of pain for two months and difficulty in moving her right shoulder associated with skin and soft tissue infections in her right arm after intramuscular iron administration by a relative for the treatment of multifactorial anemia and refractory melena. The patient worsened her general condition and was transferred to the intensive care unit. Despite the therapy instituted, the patient developed sepsis of cutaneous origin, multiple organ dysfunction, and death. Conclusions: The administration of intramuscular medication requires the participation of qualified professionals, such as nurses, mainly within the scope of the brazilian public health system which commonly comprises patients in a context of vulnerability.

Pulmonary Tuberculosis Associated with Socioeconomic Vulnerability and Ineffective Support network: Case Report

Tuberculosis is one of the 10 leading causes of death in the world. Its symptoms include fever, malaise, weakness, weight loss, chest pain, cough, expectoration, shortness of breath and sepsis, which is its most frequent complication. Due to these symptoms, many patients with tuberculosis require admission to the Intensive Care Unit, where they usually are placed on mechanical ventilation. Tuberculosis is more prevalent in the population in situations of social and economic vulnerability. The main factors that interfere with adherence to treatment and the prognosis of these patients are the patient’s support network and their socioeconomic status. We present the following report of a long-time smoker patient, with chronic kidney disease and previous treatment for tuberculosis, who was brought to the emergency room due to lowering of the sensorium, and was immediately placed on mechanical ventilation. The tests suggested sepsis with a respiratory focus, so a search for Alcohol-Acid-Resistant bacillus was carried out, with a positive result. The patient was transferred to the Intensive Care Unit due to tachycardia and acute respiratory failure. The patient was a smoker with a high tobacco load, chronic kidney disease, in addition to precarious economic, educational and self-care conditions. This report shows that patients with tuberculosis and its complications can be stabilized through known pharmacological treatment. However, the most effective measure to interrupt the transmission of the disease remains the early diagnosis and the provision of adequate treatment, with guidelines aimed at the cessation of harmful habits, such as smoking.
