Differential effects of physical activity and sleep duration on cognitive function in young adults

Purpose: Although exercise and sleep duration habits are associated with cognitive function, their beneficial effects on cognitive function remain unclear. We aimed to examine the effect of sleep duration and daily physical activity on cognitive function, elucidating the neural mechanisms using near-infrared spectroscopy(NIRS).Methods: A total of 23 healthy young adults(age 22.0 ± 2.2 years) participated in this study. Exercise amount was assessed using a uniaxial accelerometer. We evaluated total sleep time(TST) and sleep efficiency by actigraphy. Cognitive function was tested using the N-back task, the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test(WCST), and the Continuous Performance Test—Identical Pairs(CPT-IP), and the cortical oxygenated hemoglobin levels during a word fluency task were measured with NIRS.Results: Exercise amount was significantly correlated with reaction time on 0- and 1-back tasks(r = —0.602, p = 0.002; r = —0.446, p = 0.033,respectively), whereas TST was significantly correlated with % corrects on the 2-back task(r = 0.486, p = 0.019). Multiple regression analysis,including exercise amount, TST, and sleep efficiency, revealed that exercise amount was the most significant factor for reaction time on 0- and 1-back tasks(b = —0.634, p = 0.002; b = —0.454, p = 0.031, respectively), and TST was the most significant factor for % corrects on the 2-back task(b = 0.542, p = 0.014). The parameter measured by WCST and CPT-IP was not significantly correlated with TST or exercise amount. Exercise amount, but not TST, was significantly correlated with the mean area under the NIRS curve in the prefrontal area(r = 0.492, p = 0.017).Conclusion: Exercise amount and TST had differential effects on working memory and cortical activation in the prefrontal area. Daily physical activity and appropriate sleep duration may play an important role in working memory.

Analyzing Disaster Mitigation Policies in Japan and China from an Eco-DRR Perspective:A Comparative Study of Shanghai and Tokyo

Global climate change-induced natural disasters require international efforts and the adoption of Eco-Disaster Risk Reduction(Eco-DRR)policies for sustainable development.This study examines the status of Eco-DRR in disaster prevention policies through word cloud analysis,providing insights for policymakers to enhance disaster prevention amid increasing climate-related challenges.Tokyo and Japan prioritize soft aspects,while Shanghai and China emphasize engineering for flood prevention,revealing a gap in Eco-DRR application.Despite these differing approaches,the shared focus on water-related disasters indicates a shift towards urban resilience.Future research should assess policy effectiveness and the impact of Eco-DRR on disaster risk reduction and ecosystem protection.

A fate model of pathogenic viruses in a composting toilet based on coliphage inactivation

A composting toilet using sawdust as a matrix has the potential to trap pathogens that might occasionally be contained in human feces. Therefore, care should be taken when handling the sawdust. It should also be noted that pathogenic viruses tend to have stronger tolerance than pathogenic bacteria. The fates of several species of coliphages, T4, λ, Qβ and MS2, in sawdust were investigated as a viral model. The fates of coliphages were significantly different among them, and they changed in response to temperature and the water content of the sawdust. As the results, T4 coliphage had the strongest tolerance and Qβ had the weakest one in sawdust. It was estimated the days required to decrease virus to a safe level based on a risk assessment. According to the rates of Qβ and T4, 15 days and 167 days were required respectively for a safe level of infection risk based on actually operated composting toilet condition. Thus, it was significantly different depending on the species and sawdust conditions.

Characterization of Pyrolytic Lignin Extracted from Bio-oil

Bio-oil is a new liquid fuel produced by fast pyrolysis,which is a promising technology to convert bio-mass into liquid. Pyrolytic lignin extracted from bio-oil,a fine powder,contributes to the instability of bio-oil. The paper presents the structural features of three kinds of pyrolytic lignin extracted from bio-oil with different methods(WIF,HMM,and LMM) . The pyrolytic lignin samples are characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectrometer(FTIR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS) . FTIR data indicate that the three pyrolytic lignin samples have similar functional groups,while the absorption intensity is different,and show characteristic vibra-tions of typical lignocellulosic material groups O H(3340-3380 cm-1) ,C H(2912-2929 cm-1) and C O(1652-1725 cm-1) . Comparison in the region(3340-3380 cm-1) indicates that WIF has more O H stretch groups than HMM and LMM. The carbon spectra are fitted to four peaks:C1,C C or C H,BE 283.5 eV;C2,C OR or C OH,BE 284.5-285.8 eV;C3,C O or HO C OR,BE 286.10-287.10 eV;C4,O C O,BE 287.5-287.7 eV. The absence of C1,C C or C H indicates the dominant polymerization structure of aro-matic carbon in pyrolytic lignin samples. For HMM and WIF,C2a and C2b can not be separated,so there is no free hydroxyl group in the samples. The oxygen peaks are also fitted to four peaks:O1,OH,BE = 530.3 eV;O2,RC O,BE 531.45-531.72 eV;O3,O C O,BE = 532.73-533.74 eV;O4,H2O,BE 535 eV. The absence of O1 and O4 indicates that little hydroxyl groups and adsorbed water are present in the samples.

Sustainable sanitation is an approach for more ecological and sustainable water resources management. In this paper, we proposed one of the new integrated waste treatment systems： an ＂sustainable sanitation system＂ that includes separation of the black water from water system by a non-flushing toilet （bio-toilet）, and a gray water treatment based on a biological and ecological concept. Sustainable sanitation system also converts the domestic waste to soil conditioners and fertilizers, for farmland use. As one of the case studies, Environmentally Symbiotic Housing in which people actually live using the bio-toilet for the black water treatment and the household wastewater treatment facility for the gray water was introduced. The availability of this system was investigated by analyzing the sawdust used in the bio-toilet and the quality of the effluent in the household wastewater treatment facility. As the result, the water content of the sawdust did not exceed 60% in any of the sampling points and the BOD and COD of the effluent of the household wastewater treatment facility were below 10 and 20 mg/L respectively, due to the low loading. Compared to the pollution load on the water environment created by the conventional system, it was found that the effluent of the house has a lower load than the tertiary treatment and the volume of the water consumption is 75% of the conventional system.

Degradation rates and products of fluticasone propionate in alkaline solutions

The apparent degradation rate constant of fluticasone propionate(FLT) in 0.1 M NaOH:methanol=1:1 at 37 °C was previously reported to be 0.169 ± 0.003 h^(-1), and four degradation products(products 1–4) were observed in the solution. The aims of the present study were to assess the degradation rates of FLT in other alkaline solutions and clarify the chemical structures of the four degradation products in order to obtain basic data for designing an enema for inflammatory bowel disease. The apparent degradation rate constants in 0.05 M NaOH and 0.1 M NaOH:CH_3CN=1:1 were 0.472 ± 0.013 h^(-1) and 0.154 ± 0.000 h^(-1)(n=3), respectively. The chemical structures of products 1–4 in 0.1 M NaOH:methanol=1:1 were revealed by nuclear magnetic resonance(NMR)and mass spectrometry data. The chemical structure of products 2 was that the 17-position of the thioester moiety of FLT was substituted by a carboxylic acid. The degradation product in 0.1 M NaOH:CH_3CN=1:1 was found to be product 2 based on ~1H NMR data. The degradation product in 0.05 M NaOH was considered to be product 2 based on the retention time of HPLC. These results are useful for detecting the degradation products of FLT by enzymes of the intestinal bacterial flora in the large intestine after dosing FLT as an enema.

BACKGROUND Perinatal brain injury may lead to later neurodevelopmental disorders,whose outcomes may vary due to neuroplasticity in young children.Recent neuroimaging studies have shown that the left parietotemporal area(which includes the left inferior parietal lobe)is associated with phonological awareness and decoding skills,which are essential skills for reading acquisition in children.However,the literature on the effect of perinatal cerebral injury on the development of phonological awareness or decoding ability in childhood is limited.CASE SUMMARY We report the case of an 8-year-old boy who presented with reading difficulty following a perinatal injury in the parieto-temporal-occipital lobes.The patient was born at term and was treated for hypoglycemia and seizures during the neonatal period.Diffusion-weighted brain magnetic resonance imaging on postnatal day 4 revealed cortical and subcortical hyperintensities in the parieto-temporo-occipital lobe.At the age of 8 years,physical examination was unremarkable,aside from mild clumsiness.Despite occipital lobe injury,the patient had adequate visual acuity,normal eye movement,and no visual field defects.Full-scale intelligence quotient and verbal comprehension index on Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children-Fourth Edition were 75 and 90,respectively.Further assessment revealed adequate recognition of Japanese Hiragana letters.However,he had significantly slower reading speed in the Hiragana reading test than control children.The phonological awareness test revealed significant errors(standard deviation+2.7)in the mora reversal task.CONCLUSION Patients with perinatal brain injuries in the parietotemporal area require attention and may benefit from additional reading instructions.

Deciphering Starch Quality of Rice Kernels Using Metabolite Profiling and Pedigree Network Analysis

The physiological properties of rice grains are immediately obvious to consumers. High-coverage metabolomic characterization of the rice diversity research set predicted a negative correlation between fatty acid and lipid levels and amylose/total starch ratio （amylose ratio）, but the reason for this is unclear. To obtain new insight into the relationships among the visual phenotypes of rice kernels, starch granule structures, amylose ratios, and metabolite changes, we investigated the metabolite changes of five Japonica cultivars with various amylose ratios and two knockout mutants （e 1, a Starch synthase Ilia （SSIIla）-deficient mutant and the SSIIla/starch branching enzyme （BE） double-knockout mutant 4019） by using mass spectrometry-based metabolomics techniques. Scanning electron microscopy clearly showed that the two mutants had unusual starch granule structures. The metabolomic compositions of two cultivars with high amylose ratios （Hoshiyutaka and Yumetoiro） exhibited similar patterns, while that of the double-knockout mutant, which has an extremely high amylose ratio, differed. Rice pedigree network analysis of the cultivars and the mutants provided insight into the association between metabolic-trait properties and their underlying genetic basis in rice breeding in Japan. Multidimensional scaling analysis revealed that the Hoshiyutaka and Yumetoiro cultivars were Indica-like, yet they are classified as Japonica subpopulations. Exploring metabolomic traits is a powerful way to follow rice genetic traces and breeding history.

Gallbladder Burkitt's lymphoma mimicking gallbladder cancer:A case report

BACKGROUND Malignant lymphoma is a rare form of gallbladder malignancy.Most of these malignancies are diffuse large B-cell lymphomas or mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue-type lymphomas;however,Burkitt’s lymphoma of the gallbladder is extremely rare,and only two previous reports are available in the literature.Herein,we report a rare case of Burkitt’s lymphoma of the gallbladder mimicking gallbladder adenocarcinoma.CASE SUMMARY An 83-year-old man with no abdominal complaints was found to have a gallbladder tumor and periportal lymph node enlargement on computed tomography(CT)performed for hypertension screening.His laboratory data revealed slightly elevated serum levels of carcinoembryonic antigen and soluble interleukin 2 receptor.Imaging examinations revealed two irregular and contrastenhanced masses extending into the gallbladder lumen,but these did not infiltrate the serosa.Moreover,a periportal lymph node had enlarged to 30 mm.Based on these findings,we diagnosed the patient as having gallbladder adenocarcinoma with lymph node metastasis,which was treated using bile duct resection with gallbladder bed resection and periportal lymph node dissection.However,the patient was finally diagnosed as having Burkitt’s lymphoma.Although the surgical margin was pathologically negative,recurrence was noted at the hepatic radical margin and superior pancreaticoduodenal lymph nodes on positron emission tomography/CT soon after discharge.Thus,he was referred to a hematologist and started receiving treatment with reduced-dose cyclophosphamide,doxorubicin,vincristine,and prednisone.CONCLUSION Burkitt’s lymphoma can occur in the gallbladder.Biopsy can be useful in cases with findings suggestive of gallbladder malignant lymphoma.
