Argyrophilic grain disease is common in older adults and may be a risk factor for suicide:a study of Japanese forensic autopsy cases

Background Neuropathological diagnosis of argyrophilic grain disease(AGD)is currently based primarily on the combination of argyrophilic grain(AG)visualized using Gallyas-Braak silver staining,phosphorylated tau-positive pretangles,coiled bodies,and ballooned neuron *** AGD is common in patients with dementia and/or prominent psychiatric symptoms,whether it is a distinct neurological disease entity or a by-product of the aging process remains *** In 1449 serial forensic autopsy cases>40 years old(823 males and 525 females,aged 40-101 years,mean age 70.0±14.1 years),we examined the frequency and comorbid pathology of AGD cases and investigated the clini-cal appearance by comparing those with non-AGD cases using the propensity *** Of the 1449 cases,we detected 342 AGD cases(23.6%;mean age 79.7 years;177 males and 165 females).The AGD frequency and stage increased with age(P<0.001).Among AGD cases,80(23.4%)patients had dementia,and 51(15.2%)had a history of psychiatric hospital *** frequency of suicide and history of psychiatric disorders were significantly higher in AGD cases than in AGD-negative cases,matched for age,sex,and comorbidity pathol-ogy,with a relative risk of suicide of 1.72(1.30-2.26).The frequency of suicide was significantly higher in AGD cases than in non-AGD cases in female but not male *** relative risk of suicide increased to 2.27(1.20-4.30)and 6.50(1.58-26.76)in AGD patients with Lewy and progressive supranuclear palsy pathology,respectively,and decreased to 0.88(0.38-2.10)in those with advanced AD *** AGD cases,23.4%had dementia;however,the difference was not significant after controlling for age,sex,and comorbid *** Our study demonstrated that AGD is a significant and isolated risk factor for psychiatric hospital visits and suicide *** older adults,AGs may contribute to the progression of functional impairment of the limbic system,which leads to psychiatric dis

Facile and Scalable Synthesis of a Highly Hydroxylated Water-Soluble Fullerenol as a Single Nanoparticle

A water-soluble polyhydroxylated fullerene, i.e., a fullerenol, with 44 hydroxyl groups and 8 secondary bound water molecules, C60（OH）44·8H2O （estimated average structure）, has been synthesized in a facile one step reaction from pristine C60 by hydroxylation with hydrogen peroxide in the presence of a phase-transfer catalyst, tetra-n-butylammonium hydroxide （TBAH）, under organic/aqueous bilayer conditions. The fullerenol exhibited high water solubility, up to 64.9 mg/mL, under neutral （pH = 7） conditions. Dynamic light-scattering （DES） analysis showed a narrow particle size distribution, of 1-2 nm, indicating that the fullerenol had high dispersion properties in water. The results of particle size analyses, which botll focused on a single nanoregion and were conducted using a novel induced grating （IG） method and a scanning probe microscope （SPM）, were consistent with the DES results. A plausible reaction mechanism, which includes fullerene oxide intermediates detected by liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry （LC-MS）, has been proposed.

Microstructural analyses of all-solid-state Li–S batteries using LiBH4-based solid electrolyte for prolonged cycle performance

Complex hydride materials have been widely investigated as potential solid electrolytes because they have good compatibility with the lithium metal anodes used in all-solid-state batteries. However, the development of all-solid-state batteries utilizing complex hydrides has been difficult as these cells tend to have short cycle lives. This study investigated the capacity fading mechanism of all-solid-state lithium–sulfur(Li–S) batteries using Li4(BH4)3I solid electrolytes by analyzing the cathode microstructure. Crosssectional scanning electron microscopy observations after 100 discharge–charge cycles revealed crack formation in the Li4(BH4)3I electrolyte and an increased cathode thickness. Raman spectroscopy indicated that decomposition of the Li4(BH4)3I solid electrolyte occurred at a constant rate during the cycling *** combat these effects, the cycle life of Li–S batteries was improved by increasing the amount of solid electrolyte in the cathode.

In silkworms, the white egg 1 （w-1） mutant, which is characterized by white eyes and white eggs, is deficient in Bombyx kynurenine 3-monooxygenase （KMO） activity. To investigate whether the w-1 mutant phenotype is rescued by introducing the wild-type KMO gene, we constructed transgenic silkworms with the wild-type Bombyx KMO gene under the control of either the cytoplasmic actin gene promoter （A3KMO） or the native KMO gene promoter （KKMO）. We created two transgenic lines with A3KMO and one line with KKMO constructs. The eyes of adults in these lines were brown, and the eggs laid by the transgenic females were also brown. Reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction（RT-PCR） analysis showed that the A3KMO silkworm lines expressed the transcript in the mid-gut, fat bodies, and Malpighian tubules. The KKMO line expressed the transcript only in the fat bodies and Malpighian tubules. The intensity of eye and egg color in the transgenic lines was proportional to the KMO expression level. Interestingly, transgenic larvae with the A3KMO construct had a light brown larval cuticle, but the KKMO line did not. These results indicate that the wild-type KMO gene can be used as a marker gene for visually screening transgenic silkworms.

In this article, a class of Dirichlet problem with Lp boundary data for poly-harmonic function in the upper half plane is mainly investigated. By introducing a sequence of kernel functions called higher order Poisson kernels and a hierarchy of integral operators called higher order Pompeiu operators, we obtain a main result on integral representation solution as well as the uniqueness of the polyharmonic Dirichlet problem under a certain estimate.

Removal of organic matter and nitrogen from distillery wastewater by a combination of methane fermentation and denitrification/nitrification processes

The distillery wastewater of Guangdong Jiujiang Distillery, which is characteristic of containing high organic matters and rich total nitrogen, was treated by a combination of methane fermentation and denitrification/nitrification processes. 80% of COD in the raw wastewater was removed by methane fermentation at the COD volumetric loading rate of 20 kg COD/（m^3·d） using the expanded granule sludge bed （EGSB） process. However, almost all the organic nitrogen in the raw wastewater was converted into ammonia by ammonification there. Ammonia and volatile fatty acids （VFA） remaining in the anaerobically treated wastewater were simultaneously removed utilizing VFA as an electron donor by denitrification occurring in the other EGSB reactor and nitrification using PEG-immobilized nitrifying bacteria with recirculation process. An aerobic biological contact oxidization reactor was designed between denitrification/nitrification reactor for further COD removal. With the above treatment system, 18000-28000 mg/L of COD in raw wastewater was reduced to less than 100 mg/L. Also, ammonia in the effluent of the system was not detected and the system had a high removal rate for 900-1200 mg/L of TN in the raw wastewater, only leaving 400 mg/L of nitrate nitrogen.

Structural Analysis of a New Phase of BaNdMnO_4

Single crystal of BaNdMnO4 with I4/mmm was synthesized by a floating zone method. A new phase of BaNdMnO4 was obtained by annealing the single crystal in a reducing atmosphere at 573 K for 10 d. The structural change was analyzed by four-circle X-ray diffractometry and transmission electron microscopy. The new phase has an orthorhombic unit cell (Fmmm) of a=0.5486(2) nm, b=0.5484(2) nm, and c=1.3059(2) nm.

Flue gas cleaning in discharge plasma process has been studied intensivelyand we have tried to remove the NO_x and SO_2 using the wet-type plasma reactor. In this system, NOis oxidized to NO_2 and absorbed as NO_3^-, and SO_2 is absorbed as SO_3^(2-) and oxidized in theliquid to SO_4^(2-). But the concentration of NO_3^- was saturated and the absorption of NO_x andSO_2 was inhibited. Then, the reduction of NO_3^- in the liquid is required. We examined thereductive reaction of NO_3^- to NH_4^+ using discharge above the liquid surface then the pH value ofthe liquid was changed to alkaline slightly. When the Fe plate was used as a ground electrode inthe liquid, NH_4^+ was generated. Then, the relation between the generation of NH_4^+ and Fe ions(Fe^(2+) and Fe^(3+)) was studied. When Fe^(2+) was presented in the liquid, NH_4^+ was generatedand Fe^(2+) was oxidized to Fe^(3+). Fe^(2+) is required to generate NH_4^+ from NO_3^-. When NH_4^+was generated from NO_3^-, both the calculated pH value from NH_4^+ concentration and the measuredpH value indicated a similar value. From these results, the discharge above the liquid surface waseffective to convert NO_3^- to NH_4^+ and the reductive reaction leads to more absorption of NO_3^-.These results showed that the wet-type plasma reactor is effective for NO_x and SO_2 removalsystem.

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease(NAFLD)and advanced form non-alcoholic steatohepatitis(NASH)have been become globally major chronic liver diseases(1,2).NAFLD is one of the leading causes of liver cirrhosis,hepatic failure,and hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC)(3).A large number of retrospective studies reported the importance of hepatic fibrosis with NAFLD patients as the strongest factor of liver-related mortality(4,5).On the other hand,NAFLD patients with advanced hepatic fibrosis are thought to have higer risk of developing vascular events and extrahepatic cancers because of the high prevalence of coexisting cardiometabolic risk factors,such as hypertension,diabetes mellitus,dyslipidemia,and obesity(6).However,since former literatures included only few NAFLD patients with advanced hepatic fibrosis,it is hard to estimate the accurate risk on the whole spectrum of these complications.
