Transition clinic attendance is associated with improved beliefs and attitudes toward medicine in patients with inflammatory bowel disease

To evaluated the differences in knowledge, adherence, attitudes, and beliefs about medicine in adolescents with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) attending transition clinics. METHODSWe prospectively enrolled patients from July 2012 to June 2013. All adolescents who attended a tertiary-centre-based dedicated IBD transition clinic were invited to participate. Adolescent controls were recruited from university-affiliated gastroenterology offices. Participants completed questionnaires about their disease and reported adherence to prescribed therapy. Beliefs in Medicine Questionnaire was used to evaluate patients’ attitudes and beliefs. Beliefs of medication overuse, harm, necessity and concerns were rated on a Likert scale. Based on necessity and concern ratings, attitudes were then characterized as accepting, ambivalent, skeptical and indifferent. RESULTSOne hundred and twelve adolescents were included and 59 attended transition clinics. Self-reported adherence rates were poor, with only 67.4% and 56.8% of patients on any IBD medication were adherent in the transition and control groups, respectively. Adolescents in the transition cohort held significantly stronger beliefs that medications were necessary (P = 0.0035). Approximately 20% of adolescents in both cohorts had accepting attitudes toward their prescribed medicine. However, compared to the control group, adolescents in the transition cohort were less skeptical of (6.8% vs 20.8%) and more ambivalent (61% vs 34%) (OR = 0.15; 95%CI: 0.03-0.75; P = 0.02) to treatment. CONCLUSIONAttendance at dedicated transition clinics was associated with differences in attitudes in adolescents with IBD.

Solar water heating systems have been widely used around the ***,exposure to sunlight can overheat the device,affecting the efficiency and durability of the *** article proposes an adaptive deck controller that protects the system from overheating without compromising the availability of domestic hot *** water heaters are considered one of the most effective ways to reduce a home’s carbon *** are a renewable energy source that reduces reliance on fossil fuels and saves ***,this paper aims to develop a dynamic cover for solar water heaters that prevent overheating using an artificial neural network to optimize the design of control *** on a self-organizing map network,the controller automatically adjusts the temperature of the solar collector through a fabric screen covering the main subsystems,depending on many parameters such as weather conditions,collector temperature and domestic hot water depending on demand.A suggested technique of four different shade percentages(0%,20%,25%or 32%)can avoid overheating and maintain the amount of hot water the home *** renewable energy is free,proper controls are required to ensure maximum efficiency or proper *** addition,the control of renewable energy leads to longer service life.

The solidification microstructures of undercooled Ni90Cu10 alloys under different undercoolings were studied systematically by means of melt coating and cyclic *** the obtained undercooling range,the solidification structures of the two undercooled alloys have similar transformation processes,and there are two kinds of grain refinement structures under the conditions of low undercooling and high undercooling,*** microstructures of the two grain refinement processes were analyzed in more detail by electronic backscattering diffraction *** the condition of small undercooling,dendrite remelting is considered to be the main reason of grain ***,under the condition of high undercooling,the existence of annealing twins and obvious migration of grain boundary are important evidences for the occurrence of recrystallization process.

Low mtDNA diversity among widespread Australian diamondback moth Plutella xylostella （L,） suggests isolation and a founder effect

Populations of Australian diamondback moth （DBM） Plutella xylostella （L.）, a serious pest of cruciferous crops, display extremely low levels of genetic differentiation across Australia and New Zealand sample locations, as determined previously using microsatellite markers. These data suggest high levels of contemporary gene flow that is consistent with Australian DBM being a vagile species. Here we examine Australian DBM samples for haplotype variation using the mitochondrial DNA sequences of a 257 bp fragment of the CO1 gene. We compare this variation to equivalent mtDNA sequence variation in samples from New Zealand, Kenya and Korea. Using 42 moths collected throughout Australia we show that Australian DBM have both low mtDNA haplotype and nucleotide diversities. The three Australian haplotypes detected are closely related and they cluster with the common haplotype group from Indonesia. In addition the Australian haplotype frequency distribution resembled more that from Indonesia than that from Kenya or Korea. These data are consistent with an original strong Australian/New Zealand founder effect, from a south-eastern Asian source, with subsequent continued isolation. In a single season, the frequency of PXMt01, the most common Australian haplotype, was estimated at 15 locations spread across southern Australia and New Zealand using a polymerase chain reaction BiPASA method. The PXMt01 haplotype frequency variation was heterogenous, suggesting a small degree of population isolation that was not detected using microsatellites. Differentiation was not a function of geographical distance. These data suggest transient and sporadic local colonisation events by small numbers of founding females.

The molten Cu60Ni35Co5 ternary alloy was undercooled by fluxing method and solidified by natural cooling *** microstructure of all undercooled samples were *** is found that the rapidly solidified Cu60Ni35Co5 alloy has undergone two grain refinement phenomena within the undercooling range,and its microstructure and morphology change with the undercooling through the transformation process of“coarse dendrite-equiaxed dendrite-oriented fine dendrite-equiaxed crystal”.The refined structure with the maximum undercooling?T of 253 K was selected for electron backscatter diffraction(EBSD)and transmission electron microscopy(TEM)*** results show that the refined structure contains a high proportion of large angle grain boundaries(LAGBs),a large number of randomly oriented grains,and high proportion of twins,while TEM results show that the dislocation density in most areas is relatively *** above characteristics confirm that the solidification structure is refined due to recrystallization behavior under high undercooling.

Microbial community structure across grazing treatments and environmental gradients in the Serengeti

As one of the last remaining naturally grazed ecosystems on Earth,the Serengeti National Park is an ideal location to study the influence of migratory mammals on the structure of microbial communities and the factors that generate biogeography of soil ***,volcanic inputs generate environmental gradients that may also structure microbial *** studied 16S rRNA amplicons in a 13-year herbivore removal experiment to examine the influence of grazing and environmental gradients on the natural distribution of soil *** of mammalian herbivores shifted microbial community structure,with 31 taxa that were significant indicator taxa of the ungrazed treatment and three taxa that were indicators of the grazed *** abundance of many taxa were correlated with soil texture,phosphorus,iron,calcium and rainfall,and the evenness of taxa within samples was also correlated with these *** general linear mixed effects models with single predictors of multiple,highly correlated variables of beta diversity were consistent with a significant,but weak(2%),effect of grazing,and stronger effects of phosphorus(14%).Beta diversity of microbial communities was greater in grazed than in ungrazed plots;suggesting that the impacts of grazing on community assembly of microbes results from deterministic environmental filtering caused by the influence of herbivores on plant communities and soil properties rather than stochastic dispersal via herds of large *** herbivore effects are superimposed on deterministic environmental filtering by natural soil and precipitation gradients across the Serengeti.

Areawide management has a long history of achieving solutions that target pests; however, there has been little focus on the areawide management of arthropod natural enemies. Landscape ecology studies that show a positive relationship between natural enemy abundance and habitat diversity demonstrate landscape-dependent pest suppression, but have not yet clearly linked their findings to pest management or to the suite of pests associated with crops that require control. Instead the focus has often been on model systems of single pest species and their natural enemies. We suggest that management actions to capture pest control from natural enemies may be forth coming if：（i） the suite of response and predictor variables focus on pest complexes and specific management actions; （ii） the contribution of＂the landscape＂ is identified by assessing the timing and numbers of natural enemies immigrating and emigrating to and from the target crop, as well as pests; and （iii） pest control thresholds aligned with crop development stages are the benchmark to measure impact of natural enemies on pests, in turn allowing for comparison between study regions, and generalizations. To achieve pest control we will need to incorporate what has been learned from an ecological understanding of model pest and natural enemy systems and integrate areawide landscape management with in-field pest management.

Indoleamine 2, 3-dioxygenase (IDO) is a rate-limiting enzyme for the tryptophan catabolism. In human and murine cells, IDO inhibits antigen-specific T cell proliferation in vitro and suppresses T cell responses to fetal alloantigens during murine pregnancy. In mice, IDO expression is an inducible feature of specific subsets of dendritic cells (DCs), and is important for T cell regulatory properties. However, the effect of IDO and tryptophan deprivation on DC func- tions remains unknown. We report here that when tryptophan utilization was prevented by a pharmacological inhibitor of IDO, 1-methyl tryptophan (1MT), DC activation induced by pathogenic stimulus lipopolysaccharide (LPS) or inflam- matory cytokine TNF-α was inhibited both phenotypically and functionally. Such an effect was less remarkable when DC was stimulated by a physiological stimulus, CD40 ligand. Tryptophan deprivation during DC activation also regu- lated the expression of CCR5 and CXCR4, as well as DC responsiveness to chemokines. These results suggest that tryptophan usage in the microenvironment is essential for DC maturation, and may also play a role in the regulation of DC migratory behaviors.
