This paper describes a software tool, called LEVSOFT, suitable for the electric field simulations of corona electrodes by the Finite Element Method （FEM）. Special attention was paid to the user friendly construction of geometries with corners and sharp points, and to the fast generation of highly refined triangular meshes and field maps. The execution of selfadaptive meshes was also implemented. These customized features make the code attractive for the simulation of needle-type corona electrodes. Some case examples involving needle type electrodes are presented.

Neurofibroma cell lines derived from mice transgenic for HTLV-I LTR tax express high levels of HTLV-I tax mRNA and protein and exhibit a transformed phenotype. A retrovirus vector carrying HTLV-I tax cDNA in reversed transcriptional orientation was stably transfected into the neurofibroma cells. Antisense RNA inhibited expression of the tax gene with a decrease of more than 40 % in both tax mRNA and protein. Tax antisense RNA reversed the transformed phenotype as exhibited by dramatic changes in cell morphology and growth characteristics. Expression of several cellular genes which are activated by Tax protein including GM-CSF, IL-6, LT/TNF, c-myc and LIF was down-regulated, while M-CSF and c-src proto-oncogene expressions were up-regulated. Accumulation of β-actin mRNA was not affected. The changes that occurred in the tax antisense expressing neurofibroma cells could be the consequence of the decreased concentration of Tax protein. These results also indicate that HTLV-I Tax protein is crucial for maintaining the transformed cell morphology, growth and proliferation of murine neurofibroma cells and suggest that deregulation of endogenous cellular genes by Tax protein is the mechanism through which neurofibromas occur in tax mice.

The bioremediation of a long-term contaminated soil through biostimulation and surfactant addition was evaluated. The concentrations of 1,1,1-trichloro-2,2-bis（4-chlorophenyl）ethane（DDT） and its metabolites 1,1-dichloro-2,2-bis（4-chlorophenyl） ethane（DDD） and1,1-dichloro-2,2-bis（4-chlorophenyl） ethylene（DDE） were monitored during an 8-week remediation process. Physicochemical characterization of the treated soil was performed before and after the bioremediation process. The isolation and identification of predominant microorganisms during the remediation process were also carried out. The efficiency of detoxification was evaluated after each bioremediation protocol. Humidity and p H and the heterotrophic microorganism count were monitored weekly. The DDT concentration was reduced by 79% after 8 weeks via biostimulation with surfactant addition（B ＋ S） and 94.3%via biostimulation alone（B）. Likewise, the concentrations of the metabolites DDE and DDD were reduced to levels below the quantification limits. The microorganisms isolated during bioremediation were identified as Bacillus thuringiensis, Flavobacterium sp., Cuprivadius sp.,Variovorax soli, Phenylobacterium sp. and Lysobacter sp., among others. Analysis with scanning electron microscopy（SEM） allowed visualization of the colonization patterns of soil particles. The toxicity of the soil before and after bioremediation was evaluated using Vibrio fischeri as a bioluminescent sensor. A decrease in the toxic potential of the soil was verified by the increase of the concentration/effect relationship EC50 to 26.9% and 27.2% for B ＋ S and B, respectively, compared to 0.4% obtained for the soil before treatment and 2.5%by natural attenuation after 8 weeks of treatment.

Significance of stromal-1 and stromal-2 signatures and biologic prognostic model in diffuse large B-cell lymphoma

Objective:Diffuse Large B Cell Lymphoma(DLBCL)is a heterogeneous group of tumors with different biological and clinical characteristics that have diverse clinical outcomes and response to ***-1 signature of tumor microenvironment of DLBCL represents extracellular matrix deposition and histiocytic infiltrate,whereas stromal-2 represents angiogenesis that could affect tumor ***:The aim of the present study is to assess the significance of stromal-1 signature using SPARC-1 and stromal-2 signature using CD31 expression and then finally to construct biologic prognostic model(BPM)in 60 cases of DLBCL via ***:Microvessel density(P<0.05)and SPARC percentage of expression(P<0.001)were higher in DLBCL,including germinal and nongerminal cases,compared with reactive follicular *** microvessel density was significantly associated with splenic involvement(P=0.008),high mitotic count(P=0.045),and presence of capsular invasion(P=0.035).Percentage of SPARC expression was significantly associated with splenic involvement(P=0.03).Constructing BPM showed that 42 cases(70%)were of low biologic score(0–1)and 18 cases(30%)were of high biologic score(2–3).Low BPM cases showed less probability for splenic involvement(P=0.04)and a higher rate of complete response to therapy compared with high score cases(P=0.08).Conclusions:The DLBCL microenvironment could modulate tumor progression behavior since angiogenesis and SPARC positive stromal cells promote dissemination by association with spleen involvement and capsular *** prognostic models,including modified BPM,which considered cell origin of DLBCL and stromal signature pathways,could determine DLBCL progression and response to therapy.

Export competitiveness, seems like an objective concept, but it remains conceptually and empirically hard to comprehend. With the gradual reduction in trade barriers, stressing on export-led growth strategy by nations, more emphasis is now on export competitiveness since the world today has become a global village, greatly due to globalization. Once a country open up to the world, it is inviting other countries'products which may be superior in terms of quality, low prices and in terms of variety to the domestic products. For a countries industry to survive and thrive, competition with other industries is inevitable. In so doing, the industries bring about innovations, increased productivity hence increased income leading to economic growth.This paper presents a distinct way of thinking about export competitiveness and attempts to explain it empirically for EAC nations. First, two data sets are constructed:First, an indepth Exports analysis through RCA and related indices. Competitiveness of major exports commodities have been analyzed through a Revealed Comparative Advantage (RCA), Revealed symmetric advantage (RSCA) and the Net Trade Reveal Comparative advantage (NTRCA) to measure export competitiveness of EAC exports. Previous research has demonstrated that the amplitude of evoked emissions decreases in human sub-jects when the contralateral ear is stimulated by noise. The medial olivocochlear bundle (MOCB) is be-lieved to control this phenomenon. Recent research has examined this effect in individuals with auditory pro-cessing disorders (APD), specifically with difficulty understanding speech in noise. Results showed tran-sient evoked otoacoustic emissions (TEOAEs) were not affected by contralateral stimulation in these sub-jects. Much clinical research has measured the function of the MOCB through *** study will use an alternative technique, distortion product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAEs), to examine this phenomenon and evaluate the function of the MOCB. DPOAEs of individuals in a control group with normal hearing and no significant auditory processing difficulties were compared to the DPOAEs of children with signifi-cant auditory processing *** showed that the suppression effect was observed in the control group at 2 kHz with 3 kHz of narrowband noise. For the auditory processing disorders group, no significant suppression was ***, DPOAEs showed suppression with contralateral noise, while the APD group levels increased *** results provide further evidence that the MOCB may have reduced function in children with APD.
