Changes in posterior corneal elevation after small incision lenticule extraction for different myopic diopters

●AIM:To study the changes and effect factors of posterior corneal surface after small incision lenticule extraction(SMILE)with different myopic diopters.●METHODS:Ninety eyes of 90 patients who underwent SMILE were included in this retrospective study.Patients were allocated into three groups based on the preoperative spherical equivalent(SE):low myopia(SE≥-3.00 D),moderate myopia(-3.00 D>SE>-6.00 D)and high myopia(SE≤-6.00 D).Posterior corneal surfaces were measured by a Scheimpflug camera preoperatively and different postoperative times(1wk,1,3,6mo,and 1y).Posterior mean elevation(PME)at 25 predetermined points of 3 concentric circles(2-,4-,and 6-mm diameter)above the best fit sphere was analyzed.●RESULTS:All surgeries were completed uneventfully and no ectasia was found through the observation.The difference of myopia group was significant at the 2-mm ring at 1 and 3mo postoperatively(1mo:P=0.017;3mo:P=0.018).The effect of time onΔPME was statistically significant(2-mm ring:P=0.001;4-mm ring:P<0.001;6-mm ring:P<0.001).The effect of different corneal locations onΔPME was significant except 1wk postoperatively(1mo:P=0.000;3mo:P=0.000;6mo:P=0.001;1y:P=0.001).Posterior corneal stability was linearly correlated with SE,central corneal thickness,ablation depth,residual bed thickness,percent ablation depth and percent stromal bed thickness.●CONCLUSION:The posterior corneal surface changes dynamically after SMILE.No protrusion is observed on the posterior corneal surface in patients with different degrees of myopia within one year after surgery.SMILE has good stability,accuracy,safety and predictability.

Ultrasound-driven self-decomposition porphyrins as metal-free CO precursors for gas and sonodynamic synergistic therapy

Carbon monoxide(CO) is an endogenous therapeutic gas with an anti-tumor effect. The precise delivery and controlled release of CO in tumor tissues play crucial roles in anti-cancer treatment. However, efficient in situ generation of CO from metal-free COreleasing molecules(CORMs) remains a formidable challenge. Herein, we develop ultrasound(US)-driven self-decomposition porphyrin as organic and metal-free US-CORMs, which can spatiotemporally control the CO release(347 mmol CO/mol porphyrin) efficiently under physiologically harmless US conditions(1.0 MHz, 1.5 W/cm^(2), 50% duty cycle, 50 min). Moreover,porphyrin as a sonosensitizer can also generate reactive oxygen species(ROS) under US treatment to achieve sonodynamic therapy(SDT). Advanced functions of such porphyrin-based CORMs in CO gas-sonodynamic synergistic treatment have been demonstrated by evaluating the in vitro and in vivo anti-tumor effects.

The population of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease(NAFLD)patients along with relevant advanced liver disease is projected to continue growing,because currently no medications are approved for treatment.Fecal microbiota transplantation(FMT)is believed a novel and promising therapeutic approach based on the concept of the gut-liver axis in liver disease.There has been an increase in the number of pre-clinical and clinical studies evaluating FMT in NAFLD treatment,however,existing findings diverge on its effects.Herein,we briefly summarized the mechanism of FMT for NAFLD treatment,reviewed randomized controlled trials for evaluating its efficacy in NAFLD,and proposed the prospect of future trials on FMT.

Coupling interface constructions of hollow Co-Mo mixed multiple oxidation states heterostructure for high-performance aprotic Li-O_(2) battery

Constructing interfaces in heterostructures is effective for modulating the electronic properties of electrocatalysts.The hollow CoMoO_(4)-Co_(3)O_(4) heterostructure(HCMCH)was prepared as a bifunctional electrocatalyst for Li-O_(2) battery.The different components in CoMoO_(4)-Co_(3)O_(4) heterostructure presented the efficient coupling and enhanced the electrocatalytic activity for aprotic oxygen reduction reaction(ORR)and oxygen evolution reaction(OER),in which it improved the obviously reduced overpotential of 300 mV(compared with the pure Ketjen black(KB)electrode),enhanced reversibility of 80%capacity retention after 6 full cycles and the superior cyclability of more than 200 cycles with an optimized strategy.The battery performance of the HCMCH was not only associated with the unique hollow structure and rich active sites but also with coupling interface constructions synergetic effects attaching to the improving conductivity and optimized the discharge conversion.These results suggested that this HCMCH electrocatalyst was a promising candidate for the Li-O_(2) battery and it gave a novel insight for high performance electrocatalyst designing.

Engineering molecular regulation for SiO_(x) with long-term stable cycle and high Coulombic efficiency as lithium-ion battery anodes

In the current situation where the practical application of silicon anode materials encounters great challenges,silicon oxide(SiO_(x),0≤x≤2)has attracted the attention of researchers due to its relatively small volume expansion,stable cycling performance,and low cost,which is possible to realize commercial applications earlier than silicon anode.However,it remains a challenge to prepare SiO_(x)materials with long-term stable cycling performance and high Coulombic efficiency using low-cost methods.In this work,SiO_(x)anode material with high Coulombic efficiency and good long-term cycling stability was prepared at a low cost by hydrolysis of siloxane and in situ polymerization of phenolic resin.The hydrolysis of siloxane was further regulated by different silane coupling agents to regulate the size and microstructure of prepared SiO_(x)materials,which displayed the substantially improved electrochemical performance.The excellent electrochemical performance of SiO_(x)prepared by regulated hydrolysis of siloxane with silane coupling agents is attributed to the effect of silane coupling agent on size and microstructure of SiO_(x),revealing that the strategy of modulating the hydrolysis of siloxane by silane coupling agent is a potential method to prepare high-performance SiO_(x)materials.

Protein C(PC)is a key component of the vitamin K-dependent coagulation pathway.It exerts anticoagulant effects by inactivating factors V and VIII.Acquired or inherited PC deficiency results in a prothrombotic state,with presentations varying from asymptomatic to venous thromboembolism.However,there has been an increasing number of reports linking PC deficiency to arterial thromboembolic events,such as myocardial infarction and ischemic stroke.This editorial focuses on the association between PC deficiency and thromboembolism,which may provide some insights for treatment strategy and scientific research.

Effect of red clover isoflavones on hormone, immune, inflammatory,and plasma biochemistry in lactating dairy cows

This study was to conducted to investigate the effect of red clover isoflavones on the health indicated by immune status and blood biochemistry in dairy cows. Sixty-eight healthy Holstein lactating cows were randomly divided into four treatments(n = 17 per treatment) from 5 blocks according to milk yield using a randomized complete block design. No initial differences in parity(2.13 ± 1.21), days in milk(165 ± 21 d), and milk yield(33.93 ± 3.81 kg/d) between groups. Cows were fed the basal diet supplemented with 0, 2, 4, or 8 g/kg red clover extract(RCE) in diet(dry matter based). Feeding, refusal feed weights, and milk yield were recorded three consecutive days in weeks 0, 4, 8, and 12. Blood was collected from the tail vein of the cows on the last day of weeks 4, 8 and 12, 1 h after the morning feeding,and analyzed for hormones, immunoglobulins, inflammatory markers, and markers of liver and kidney activities. The dry matter intake was significantly decreased by 3.7% in the 8 g/kg group(P 0.05). These results recommend the supplementation of RCE at a level from 2 to4 g/kg DM.

An empirical model for high energy density lithium-(ion)batteries with ultra-thick electrodes

Increasing the electrode thickness is a significant method to decrease the weight and volume ratio of the inactive components for high energy density of the devices.In this contribution,we extracted a repeating unit in the configurations and establish the empirical energy density model based on some assumptions.In this model,the effects of the electrode thickness on the energy density for lithium-ion batteries(LIBs),lithium metal batteries(LMBs),and anode-free lithium batteries(ALBs)are evaluated quantitively with the current parameters of the batteries.The results demonstrate that the structure evolutions from LIBs,LMBs to ALBs with the reduction of the anode weight contribution,the energy density can be well improved exactly.While the increase of the thickness of the electrode provide another route to furthe r enhance the energydensity by decreasing the weight contribution of inactive materials;meanwhile the effects for ALBs are higher than LMBs and LIBs due to the higher weight ratio of inactive materials.This empirical energy density model is also applied into the practical system and provide intuitional results to guide the battery design for higher energy density.

Evaluating soil acidification risk and its effects on biodiversity–ecosystem multifunctionality relationships in the drylands of China

Background:Soil acidifcationn caused by anthropogenic activities may aft soil biochemical cydling,bidiversity,productivity,and multiple eosystem-related functions in drylands.However,to date,such information is lacking to support this hypothesis.Methods Based on a transect survey of 78 naturally assembled shrub communities,we caloulated acid deposition flux in Northwest China and evaluated its likely ecological ffets by testing three altemnative hypotheses,namely:.nidche complementarity,mass ratio,and vegetation quantity hypotheses Rao's quadratic entopy and community-weighted mean traits were employed to represent the complementary aspect of niche complementarity and mass ratio effects,respectively.Resulbs:We observed that in the past four decades,the concentrations of exchangeable base cations in soil in Northwest China have decreased significantly to the extent of having faced the risk of depletion,whereas changes in the calium carbonate content and pH of soil were not significant.Adid deposition primani ly increased the aboweground biomass and shrub density in shrublands but had no sigmificant effect on shrub richness and ecasystem multifunctionality(EMF),indicating that acid deposition had positive but weak ecological effects on dryland ecosystems.Community wd ghted mean of functional traits(representing the mass ratio hypothesis)correlated negatively with EMF,whereas both Rao's quadratic entropy(representing the niche complementarity hypothesis)and aboveground biomass(representing the vegetation quantity hypothesis)correlated positively but insignifcantly with EMF.These biodiversity-EMF relationships highlight the fragility and instability of drylands relative to forest ecasystems.Concuions:The findings from this study serve as important reference points to understand the ris of soil acidification in arid regions and its impacts on biodiversity-EMF relationships.

MnS–MnO heterogeneous nanocube@N, S-doped carbon as a highly efficient bifunctional water splitting electrocatalyst

A stable,efficient,and economical bifunctional electrolytic catalyst would be incredibly beneficial for the development of hydrogen production by electrocatalytic water splitting.In this study,we synthesized a novel MnS–MnO heterogeneous nanocube@N,S-doped carbon （MnS–MnO@NSC）.MnS–MnO nanocubes possess rich heterogeneous interfaces and plentiful catalytic active sites to promote electrochemical reactions,while the N,S-doped carbon shell possesses excellent conductivity and catalytic properties and protects the nanocubes.MnS–MnO@NSC exhibited excellent electrochemical properties as an effective bifunctional electrocatalyst for the hydrogen evolution reaction （HER） and oxygen evolution reaction（OER） in KOH solution.In the HER,the overpotential was as low as 124 mV at a current density of 10 mA·cm-2while in the OER,it was only 340 mV at 100 mA·cm-2under the same conditions.In addition,a MnS–MnO@NSC||MnS–MnO@NSC electrolyzer exhibited almost comparable activity and higher steadiness than those exhibited by the state-of-the-art Pt/C||RuO2/C system for full water splitting in KOH solution.
