Bone mineral density and disorders of mineral metabolism in chronic liver disease

AIM:To estimate the prevalence and identify the risk factors for metabolic bone disease in patients with ***:The study was performed on 72 Indian patients with cirrhosis(63 male, 9 female;aged < 50 years).Etiology of cirrhosis was alcoholism(n = 37), hepatitis B(n = 25) and hepatitis C(n = 10).Twenty-three patients belonged to Child class A, while 39 were in class B and 10 in class *** causes for metabolic bone disease and osteoporosis were ruled *** exposure, physical activity and dietary constituents were *** metabolic profiles were derived, and bone mineral density(BMD) was measured using dual energy X ray *** BMD was defined as a Z score ***:Low BMD was found in 68% of *** spine was the most frequently and severely affected *** factors for low BMD included low physical activity, decreased sunlight exposure, and low lean body *** intake was adequate, with unfavorable calcium:protein ratio and calcium:phosphorus *** D deficiency was highly prevalent(92%).There was a high incidence of hypogonadism(41%).Serum estradiol level was elevated significantly in patients with normal ***-like growth factor(IGF) 1 and IGF binding protein 3 levels were below the age-related normal range in both ***-1 was signiflcantly lower in patients with low *** osteocalcin level was low(68%) and urinary deoxypyridinoline to creatinine ratio was high(79%), which demonstrated low bone formation with high ***:Patients with cirrhosis have low *** factors are reduced physical activity, low lean body mass, vitamin D def iciency and hypogonadism and low IGF-1 level.

Energy Gap Dependence on Mn Content in a Diluted Magnetic Quantum Dot

Laparoscopic management of hydatid cysts using long ribbon gauze:An initial experience of 37 consecutive cases

Objective:The laparoscopic approach is becoming the standard of care for many surgical ***,in the case of hydatid cysts,laparoscopic management is challenging due to the risk of spillage of hydatid fluid,which can cause an anaphylactic reaction and ***,we report our initial experience with laparoscopic partial pericystectomy of hydatid cysts using long ribbon gauze to decrease intra-operative ***:This was a retrospective study(between January 2010 and December 2021)in the Department of Surgical Gastroenterology,Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Science,a tertiary care referral center in northern ***,we have included 37 consecutive patients with hydatid cysts of the liver and *** was made by laboratory and imaging findings(abdominal sonography or contrast enhanced CT scans).All patients were managed with laparoscopic partial ***,a betadine-soaked long ribbon gauze,high-pressure suction canula,and an endo-bag were used in all *** collected data included patient demography,location,size,and number of cysts,WHO type,operative time,blood loss,postoperative complications,hospital stay and ***:In our series,the mean age was 38.4±13.6 years,15(40.5%)were men and 22(59.5%)were *** right lobe of the liver was the most commonly affected site(21,56.8%).The mean operative time was 80.0±32.0 min,and intraoperative blood loss was 23.6±11.5 *** leak was present in 6(16.2%)*** was no *** hospital stay was 5(3,9)days,and no recurrence was observed at a median follow-up of 36 ***:Laparoscopic partial pericystectomy using this technique is safe in the management of hydatid ***,proper packing and safe removal of soaked gauzes can minimize the incidence of postoperative complications and recurrence.

Impact assessment of biofouling resistant nano copper oxide-polyaniline coating on aquaculture cage nets

Biofouling is a major issue in aquaculture cages and nano materials based antifouling strategies became more prominent in recent *** aquaculture cage net surface which is modified with polyaniline and nano-copper oxide(CuO),reported to have biofouling *** of nano CuO from the net to the aquatic environment and its bioaccumulation in fish is the major concern against the technology *** present study aimed to understand the accumulation of copper in fishes grown in a nano CuO treated aquaculture cage *** the leaching pattern of nano CuO,biofouling inhibition and changes in strength of the cage net due to the nano CuO *** grown in the treated cages exhibited normal growth characteristics with no signs of abnormalities and also copper in their organs were within the prescribed standard *** CuO treated cage net exhibited excellent biofouling resistance and the percentage of occlusion of mesh by foulers were 56.77%more efficient than untreated cage *** of nano CuO leached to the aquatic system was less than 8μg/g⋅*** fouling organism assemblage on untreated and treated net was 18 and 11 species,*** calcareous shelled foulers were absent on treated *** study highlighted the potential application of nano CuO treatment to control biofouling in aquaculture cages.

Elements of disturbance that affect epiphyte vitality in a temperate rainforest:an experimental approach

Aims Epiphytes are an abundant and diverse component of many wet temperate forests and have significant roles in ecosystem *** is known about the processes and rates of their death and decomposition when they fall from the canopy,which limits our understanding of their role in forest carbon sequestration and nutri-ent *** the temperate rainforest of the Quinault River Valley,Washington State,our aim was to test hypotheses regarding four elements of disturbance that might contribute to their *** We established set of experiments in which we placed samples of canopy epiphytes and their branch segments:(i)in the canopy versus forest floor microenvironment(stratum);(ii)attached to live versus dead branch substrates;(iii)subjected to physical disruption and‘jarring’;and(iv)in direct versus indirect con-tact with the forest *** the 2-year study,we assigned a non-destructive‘vitality index’(based on color and appar-ent mortality and dryness)to each sample every 2-3 months to compare effects of the experimental treatments and analyzed with a statistical model and post hoc pairwise comparisons of *** Findings The canopy versus ground stratum and live/dead branch status sig-nificantly affected epiphyte *** of physical disruption and ground contact were not *** were seasonal effects(low vitality during the sampling times in the summer,revitalization upon sampling times in the winter)for all treatments except samples in contact with the *** implication of these results relates to effects of climate change,which is predicted to shift to hotter,drier summers and wetter *** change may affect forest dynamics and nutrient cycling in unpredictable *** also point to future experiments to understand biotic and abiotic effects on epiphyte disturbance and dynamics.
