Experimental and Theoretical Investigations on Copper Corrosion Inhibition by Cefixime Drug in 1M HNO<sub>3</sub>Solution

Cefixime, a third-generation semi-synthetic cephalosporin antibiotic was used as a copper corrosion inhibitor in 1M HNO3 solution. The study was conducted through the weight loss technique at 298 - 318 K and theoretical studies based on quantum chemistry. The studied drug inhibited the corrosion of copper in 1M HNO3 over the cefixime concentration range (0.02 - 2 mM). The inhibition efficiency increased with an increase in the inhibitor concentration to reach 91.07% at 2 mM, but decreased with an increase in temperature. The thermodynamic functions related to the adsorption of cefixime on the copper surface and that of the metal dissolution were computed and analyzed. The results point out spontaneous adsorption, mainly through a physisorption mechanism following Langmuir adsorption isotherm model and an endothermic dissolution process. Quantum chemical calculations were also performed at B3LYP level with 6-31G (d, p) basis set and lead to molecular descriptors such as EHOMO (energy of the highest occupied molecular orbital), ELUMO (energy of the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital), ΔE (energy gap) and μ (dipole moment). The global reactivity descriptors such as χ (electronegativity), χ (global hardness), S (global softness), and ω (electrophilicity index) were derived using Koopman’s theorem and analyzed. The local reactivity parameters, including Fukui functions and dual descriptors were determined and discussed. Experimental and theoretical results were found to be in good agreement.

Electrochemical Study of the Synergistic Effect of Two Copper Corrosion Inhibitors, Nicotinic Acid (NAC) and Nicotinamide (NAM) in Two Different Media

Inhibitive properties of NAC and NAM as well as their mixture have been investigated in two different corrosive media through potentiodynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy at 298 K. These electrochemical measurements indicate that the inhibition efficiency increases with the concentration for each of the inhibitors used separately as well as for their mixture. In both cases, the combination behaves as mixed type inhibitor with a great cathodic tendency. NaCl 3.5% highlights an antagonist effect of NAM which reduces the effectiveness of NAC whereas HNO3 1M shows a synergistic effect between them.

The analysis of data from the National Observation Network (RNO) of the water quality of the Ivorian Anti-Pollution Center (CIAPOL) relating to the physico-chemical quality and the trophic state of the lagoon bays of Côte d’Ivoire has allowed apprehending the degree of pollution of the bays of Biétry. This bay is heavily polluted, overall, there is a high salinity at depth between 22.5‰ and 27.5‰, a slightly basic character with a pH oscillating between 7.8 and 8.1 for surface waters and between 7, 6 and 7.8 for bottom waters. This is a very marked surface oxygenation between 100.94% and 114.72%;a slightly elevated temperature oscillating between 28.6°C and 29°C for surface waters and between 26.6°C and 27.1°C for bottom waters. This is high turbidity due to suspended solids and high nitrogen and phosphorus concentrations as well. As a result, these waters evolve towards a “mesotrophic” character according to the OECD (1982) and they are “eutrophic” according to Carlson (1977). This water is therefore impure according to the WHO concerning water intended for bathing activities.

This study evaluates the performance of shale from Ivory Coast used as substrate in vertical-flow constructed wetlands in removal of phosphates and nitrogen. The pilot-scale artificial wetland has been duplicated: filter planted with Panicum maximun and unplanted. They were set up outdoors, and fed with a municipal wastewater. The wetlands have been fed with three batches per week (intermittent) over a period of 3 months. During the operation period, the hydraulic residence time (HRT) 52 h was used, while wastewater temperatures varied from about ~33°C. The removal performance of the constructed wetland units was very good, since it reached on an average 98%, 89.4%, 89.4%, 84%, 80%, 84.8% and 92% for TSS, DOC, BOD5, , TKN, TP and respectively. In addition, the vegetation did not demonstrate superior performance to unplanted controls. Therefore, this study focuses on the role of shale in the phosphorus and nitrogen removal from wastewater by constructed wetland.

Nicotinamide Inhibition Properties for Copper Corrosion in 3.5% NaCl Solution: Experimental and Theorical Investigations

This work reports the inhibition properties of nicotinamide (NAM) for copper protection during its applications in seawater systems such as water pipelines, shipbuilding, seawater desalination and heat exchange systems. The efficiency of NAM as a copper corrosion inhibitor in simulated seawater (3.5% NaCl solution) was investigated by Tafel extrapolation and linear polarization methods in the temperature range from 20℃ to 50℃. The corrosion parameters and the adsorption isotherms were determined using potentiodynamic polarization techniques. It was found that the inhibition efficiency (η) and the coverage rate (θ) increase up 80% at 25℃ for nicotinamide concentration of 10 mM but decrease as the temperature of the solution increases. Moreover, the obtained thermodynamic parameters using Langmuir model suggested a physical adsorption type. A correlation was found between the corrosion inhibition efficiency and the global theoretical parameters obtained by the functional density method B3LYP/ 6-31 + G (d, p). Local parameters such as condensed Fukui functions [f(r)] and condensed local softness [s(r)] indices have also been determined to obtain a chemical insight into atoms that have a significant tendency toward donation or acceptance of whole or fraction of electrons.

Co-Occurring Plant Species of the West African Critically Endangered Aubregrinia taïensis Heine, in Côte d’Ivoire

The Upper Guinea Forest is subject to heavy deforestation. In this context, many endemic and/or rare plant species are threatened with extinction. This is the case of Aubregrinia taïensis (Aubrév. & Pellegr.) Heine, a critically endangered Sapotaceae species, endemic to Côte d’Ivoire and Ghana. After 3 years of investigation in and around the Tai National Park (TNP) in the West of Côte d’Ivoire, only one individual of this species was located and no sexual reproductive organs (fruits, seeds) were observed. Woody plant species around this individual were inventoried in order to know the species that can co-occur with Aubregrinia taïensis. For that a plot of 30 m of diameter was established around the individual and all of the woody species of this circle were inventoried. Then, the taxonomic diversity, the chorology of the species, the conservation status and their life-form were recorded. A total of 130 woody plant species belonging to 51 families were collected in the site. The most represented families are Euphorbiaceae (12 spp.), Rubiaceae (10 spp.), Annonaceae (7 spp.), Fabaceae, Moraceae, Malvaceae (6 spp. each) while the most represented genera are Diospyros L. (4 spp.), Cola Schott & Endl. and Vitex L. (3 spp.). Species from the Guineo-Congolese Region (GC) are the most abundant (72%). They are followed by West African endemic species (GCW, 19%). Microphanerophytes (mp) are the most abundant and represent more than 40% of the species. Three vulnerable species were found in this plot: Campylospermum amplectens, Placodiscus boya and Trichoscypha cavalliensis. Thus, the preservation of this forest is more than necessary.

7-(2-ethyltiophenyl) theophylline was used as copper corrosion inhibitor in 1M HNO3 solution. The study was performed using mass loss, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Density Functional Theory (DFT) methods. The results show that the inhibition efficiency increases up to 91.29% with increase of the inhibitor concentration (from 0.05 to 5 mM) but decreases with raising temperature of the solution. Copper dissolution was found to be temperature and 7-(2-ethyltiophenyl) theophylline concentration dependent. The thermodynamic functions related to the adsorption of the molecule on the copper surface and that of the metal dissolution were determined. The results point out a spontaneous adsorption and an endothermic dissolution processes. Adsorption models including Langmuir, El-Awady and Flory-Huggins isotherms were examined. The results also suggest spontaneous and predominant physical adsorption of 7-(2-ethyltiophenyl) theophylline on the metal surface which obeys Langmuir isotherm model. Further investigation on the morphology using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) has confirmed the existence of a protective film of inhibitor molecules on copper surface. Furthermore, the global and local reactivity parameters of the studied molecule were analyzed. Experimental and theoretical results were found to be in good agreement.
