Facile Preparation of Silver Halide Nanoparticles for Biological Application and Waste Water Treatment

Highly efficient silver halide nanoparticles (AgX, X = Cl, Br NP’s) were successfully synthesized by facile and template-free direct-precipitation method using potassium chloride, potassium bromide and silver nitrate as reactive sources. The as-prepared AgX NP’s were characterized by FTIR, thermogravimetric analysis, XRD, EDX and HRTEM. The antimicrobial susceptibilities against two Gram-positive bacteria (Bacillus cereus, Staphylococcus aureus) and four Gram-negative bacteria (Salmonella typhi, Escherichia coli, P. aeruginosa and Klebsiella pneumoniae) in addition to five fungi (Aspergillus flavus, A. carbonarus, Penicillium verrucosum, Fusarium verticelloides and A. niger) were tested by the disk diffusion technique. The antibacterial and antifungal results suggest that the prepared AgX NP’s show high activity against the tested organisms compared to tetracycline and Nystatin taken as standard drugs. As an application, the use of the prepared AgX NP’s as photo catalyst for the decontamination of malathion as VX chemical warfare agent (CWA) stimulant from water sample was extensively studied.

The present research reports of quick and marked changes induced by plant extract of Euryops arabicus in the gene expression of 49-kDa apyrases,cytoskeletal proteins,ATPases,ADPase and amount of amino acid of pea(Pisum sativum ***).Pellets of cytoskeletals proteins(27000 xg)were probed with anti-apyrase antibody,biotinylated anti-rat,actin and alpha and beta-tubulin for Western *** and ADPase activities were determined based on the hydrolytic efficacy of adenine triphosphate and adenine *** 72 hours,the abundance of apyrases,cytoskeletal proteins and amount of amino acid in pellets of 27000 xg of germinated pea seeds in *** extracts were sharply increased than those sown in distilled *** the samples exhibited that the stems had more amount from apyrases,cytoskeletal proteins,amino acids and ATPase and ADPase activities than primary leaves and primary roots that were germinated either on *** water extract or in distilled *** on the enzyme’s capability to hydrolyse nucleotide triphosphate and nucleotide diphosphate as well as the direct association between expression of 49-kDa apyrase and cytoskeletal proteins,*** water extract had an important effect on plant germinations.

In this research, the effect of semi-solid isothermal heat treatment on microstructure, hardness and impact toughness of ductile iron (DI) is studied. Heat-treated air-cooled ductile iron shows spheroid graphite, cementite and fine pearlite matrix structure. At the early stages of heating time (up to 20 min), the DIs show significant decrease in amounts of graphite and significant increase in amounts of cementite. By increasing heating time, above 20 min, the DIs show slightly decrease in amounts of graphite and slightly increase in amounts of cementite. Hardness values increase by increasing heating time. Meanwhile, the impact toughness decrease with increasing heating time. The optimum heating treatment condition for reasonable structure and mechanical properties could be achieved at the temperature of 1165℃ for the heating time range of 10 to 15 min.

Atrial Myocardial Deformation Changes in Patients with Non-Valvular Atrial Fibrillation

Background: Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common cardiac arrhythmia. It increases cardiovascular morbidity, especially embolic stroke and mortality. Two-dimensional speckle tracking echocardiography (2D STE) is a useful method that has been used to detect changes in atrial myocardial deformation in AF patients. Objectives: To study atrial myocardial deformation changes in patient with non-valvular AF using 2D STE. Patients and Methods: This study included 25 patients with non-valvular AF and 25 normal healthy controls. 2D STE was used for assessment of strain and strain rate of septal and free walls of both right atrium (RA) and LA and left ventricle (LV). Results: Mean LA septal and lateral strain and strain rate were significantly reduced in the AF group compared to the control group (-7.2% ± 5.2% vs. -20.4% ± 3.9%, -8.7% ± 8.8% vs. -21.7% ± 3.4%) and (-0.9 ± 0.5 S-1 vs. -1.9 ± 0.4 S-1, –1.1 ± 0.6 S-1 vs. -2.04 ± 0.3 S-1) respectively. Mean RA septal and lateral strain and strain rate were significantly reduced in the AF group compared to the control group (-5.9% ± 6.1% vs. -23.4% ± 4.5%, -8.9% ± 9.3% vs. -21.7% ± 3.4%) and (-0.98 ± 0.6 S-1 vs. -1.9 ± 0.3 S-1, -1.3 ± 0.9 S-1 vs. -2.1 ± 0.5 S-1) respectively. A renewable energy plant which relies on wind speed or solar insolation is unreliable because of the stochastic nature of weather patterns. It is theorized that by using multiple renewable energy plants in separate areas of a region, the different weather conditions might approach a probabilistically independent relationship. The goal of this paper is to utilize the power system technology to help disseminate wind and solar power systems to get a stable energy. A new approach to get appropriate stable energy is achieved by using the interrupted energy that obtained from wind farm and solar insolation. This is achieved by lifting water to a higher level with appropriate pumps and storing it in the form of potential energy. Then a stable energy is obtained by reliving water to the lower level. In this paper, the efficiency obtained from the renewable energy is compared with that obtained from traditional ones. An experimental model to simulate the process of converting the renewable energy to a stable energy is presented. The obtained results from experimental model explained that the renewable energy can be converted to a stable one with high efficiency.

The prevalence of obesity is increasing world-wide. There was general agreement that BMI surveillance was an epidemiologic tool for the assessment of obesity in different populations. The aim of this study is to screen community awareness about body measurement, and to examine actual body weight with self-perception of body image. Methods: This study was a community-based survey conducted in Fayoum Governorate. We used multistage stratified random sampling to select the study household with a number of participants (582). We developed a self-administrated structured questionnaire. Anthropometric assessment weight, height and waist circumference were measured, and BMI was calculated. Results: Our results showed that the prevalence of obesity was 88.7% more in female than male. More than half of the participants knew their weight and height. Overall, 40.6% of women and 38.8% of men misclassified their own weight status by BMI. There was a statistical significant difference between knowing weight and height, and their accurate results (P = 0.000). Conclusion: Our results showed that the majority of the Fayoum population was obese. Implementation of health promotion and health education in the community should use effective nutrition education in the mass-media to raise awareness of appropriate body weight and healthy lifestyle.

Resistin is a secretory adipocytoine, which is expressed mainly in humans by inflammatory cells especially macrophages. Resistin serum levels are elevated in end-stage renal diseases of people having an increased risk of infections as a result of impaired polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMNLs) functions. Objectives: To evaluate neutrophil functions (phagocytosis and oxidative burst) in children with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) on regular hemodialysis and to shed light on the contribution of resistin on neutrophil functions. Patients and Methods: The study included 40 children with ESRD on regular hemodialysis. Their ages ranged from 6 to 12 years, and they were selected from children attending the pediatric hemodialysis unit of AL-Zahraa Hospital, Al-Azher University during the period from October 2012 to December 2013. Another group of 40 apparently healthy children with matched age and sex with the patient group served as a control. Serum resistin, phagocytic index and nitro blue tetrazolium test (NBT%) were assessed in both groups. Results: There was a statistically more significant increase in resistin serum levels in cases than in controls;it was (3.25 ± 0.86 ng/ml) and (0.25 ± 0.16 ng/ml) respectively

Objective:To investigate the antifibrotic role of rosmarinic acid(RA),a natural polyphenolic compound,on HSCs activation/proliferation and apoptosis in vitro and in vivo. Methods:The impact of RA on stellate cell line(HSC-T6) proliferation,activation and apoptosis was assessed along with its safety on primary hepatocytes. In vivo,rats were divided into:(i) normal;(ii) thioacetamide(TAA)-intoxicated rats for 12 weeks;(iii) TAA+silymarin or(iv) TAA+RA. At the end of experiment,liver functions,oxidative stress,inflammatory and profibrogenic markers,tissue inhibitor metalloproteinases type-1(TIMP-1) and hydroxyproline(HP) levels were evaluated. Additionally,liver histopathology and immunohistochemical examinations of alpha-smooth muscle actin(α-SMA),caspase-3 and proliferation cellular nuclear antigen(PCNA) were determined. Results:RA exhibited anti-proliferative effects on cultured HSCs in a time and concentration dependent manner showing an IC50 of 276 μg/mL and 171 μg/mL for 24 h and 48 h,respectively,with morphological reversion of activated stellate cell morphology to quiescent form. It significantly improved ALT,AST,oxidative stress markers and reduced TIMP-1,HP levels,inflammatory markers and fibrosis score(S1 vs S4). Furthermore,reduction in α-SMA plus elevation in caspase-3 expressions of HSCs in vitro and in vivo associated with an inhibition in proliferation of damaged hepatocytes were recorded. Conclusions:RA impeded the progression of liver fibrosis through inhibition of HSCs activation/proliferation and induction of apoptosis with preservation of hepatic architecture.

High-risk neuroblastoma still has poor survival outcome. Improvement of outcome is attributed to the consolidation of chemotherapy by autologous bone marrow transplant. Further improvement of the outcome by tandem autologous transplant is followed by immune therapy. We aimed with this study to correlate initial disease characteristics with the outcome of transplanted high-risk neuroblastoma. A retrospective analysis was done for 73 transplanted patients. Patients were treated in Children’s Cancer Hospital Egypt from July 2012 to July 2015. Seventy patients received Busulphan/Melphalan conditioning. The 3-year overall survival (OS) and event-free survival (EFS) was 63.3% and 51.3%, respectively. Disease stage did not impact the OS and EFS, P = 0.54 and 0.62 respectively. Status of MYCN did not reflect statistically on outcome for tumors with amplified compared to nonamplified (EFS, 49% and 63.1%, respectively). Response after induction chemotherapy pointed that patients who had objective response (complete response, very good partial response and partial response) were better compared to those with less response with EFS and OS of 53.3% and 64.2% compared to 49.3% and 63.5%, respectively, which may indicate that chemo-sensitive tumors have better outcome. By the end of the study, twenty-seven patients relapsed, out of them 25 patients died. Pretransplant risk features for neuroblastoma was nullified by autologous stem cell transplant. The modest outcome observed, highlights some limitations that need to be sorted out in countries with limited resources. The introduction of immune therapy and tandem transplant is needed to achieve a better outcome, yet it adds to more financial burden.
