Scenario-based estimation of catchment carbon storage: linking multi-objective land allocation with InVEST model in a mixed agriculture-forest landscape

This study performed a scenario-based land allocation in a mixed agriculture-forest landscape in northern Iran to investigate how different land use policies contribute to changes in carbon storage.In pursuit of this goal,a temporal profile of the trade-off between the region’s land use land cover(LULC)classes was produced using Landsat image of the year 2016.The weighted linear combination procedure was also used to map the suitability of land for agriculture,forest,urban,and rangeland based on ecological and socio-economic criteria.The suitability maps were analyzed through the Multi-Objective Land Allocation procedure under five scenarios with differing areas devoted to each LULC to generate different patterns of LULC distribution in the region.In addition,the Integrated Valuation of Ecosystem Services and Tradeoffs(InVEST)model was used to estimate the potential of LULC classes in carbon storage.The amount of carbon storage differed significantly between the scenarios,ranging from 1.29 tons/ha/year when the majority of the land was devoted to agriculture(76%of the area)to 5.40 tons/ha/year when the landscape was dominated by forest(77%of the area).The extreme conditions presented in this research may not be as likely to occur,but opens a dialog between different stakeholders and informs of a probable trend of ecosystem service loss due to agricultural land expansion.

Diamine-modified porous indium frameworks with crystalline porous materials(CPM)-5 structure for carbon dioxide fixation under co-catalyst and solvent free conditions

In the presentwork,functional diamine groups into indium frameworks to synthesize cyclic carbonates from CO_(2)and epoxides with efficient catalytic activity in the absence of cocatalyst and solvent are reported for the first time.Crystalline porous materials(CPM)-5 modified with 1,2-phenylene diamine and ethylene diamine(CPM-5-PhDA and CPM-5-EDA),were prepared using a post-synthetic modification(PSM)method.The properties of the modified CPM-5 were characterized by powder X-ray diffraction(PXRD),Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy(FT-IR),X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS),N2-adsorption,scanning electron microscopy(SEM),CO_(2)adsorption,and temperature programmed desorption TPD methods.The presence of diamine groups as basic sites and indium Lewis acid sites in the framework structure were desirable for high catalytic activity.For a given catalyst weight,CPM-5-PhDA was the best candidate to appear with great catalytic activity and selectivity for the cycloaddition reaction at 100°C and1MPa CO_(2)under co-catalyst and solvent free conditions.CPM-5-PhDA alsowas found to afford large and bulky epoxides.The catalyst can be easily separated and reused five times without any decline in activity.

Background Attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder(ADHD)is a common disease among children;it affected 5-7% of the population in 2015.ADHD is a multifactorial disease,and its etiology is still not clearly understood.Data Sources This narrative review has been done by searching the PubMed and Embase databases using attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder,ADHD,risk factors;genetics;pediatrics;psychiatrics as keywords.Results ADHD is considered to be a hereditary disorder in which genes play the fundamental role in the pathogenesis;however,findings from genetic-environmental studies support the hypothesis that genetic factors can exert effects on an indi-viduaFs condition by determining his/her responses to environmental exposures,especially those during the prenatal stage.Conclusion ADHD is considered as a hereditary disorder in which genes and prenatal risk factors play fundamental roles in the pathogenesis.

Affinity of anticancer drug,daunomycin,to core histones in solution:comparison of free and cross-linked proteins

Aim:The interaction of anthracycline anticancer drugs with chromatin,nucleo-somes and histone H1 has been extensively studied.In the present study,for thefirst time,we have investigated the binding of anthracycline antibiotic,daunomycin,to free and cross-linked thymus core histories (CL-core) in solution and in theabsence of DNA.Methods:Fluorescence,UV/Vis spectroscopy and equilibriumdialysis techniques were used.Results:The UV spectroscopy results show thatdaunomycin induces hypochromicity in the absorption spectra of the core histones.Fluorescence emission intensity is decreased upon daunomycin binding and theprocess is concentration dependent.The equilibrium dialysis shows that the bind-ing is positive cooperative with the binding sites as Scatchard plot and Hill Coef-ficient confirm it.Conclusion:The results suggest that daunomycin shows muchhigher affinity to core histones free in solution than to CL-core,implying that thebinding is most likely due to the accessibility of these proteins to the environment.It is suggested that daunomycin binds strongly to open state of histones,such asin tumor cells,rather than to their compact structure seen in normal chromatin.

Use of complementary and alternative medicine in pregnant women:A cross-sectional survey in the south of Iran

Objective: The use of traditional medicine and complementary alternative medicine(TM/CAM) derived from herbal remedies or natural supplements is increasing worldwide, but there are limited data on the use of TM/CAM during pregnancy. Iran has various ethnic populations, and the usage of TM/CAM by the different ethnic groups has not been researched. The aim of this study is to understand the use of TM/CAM modalities in pregnant women of different ethnic groups in southern Iran.Methods: This study was conducted in primary health care centers in Khuzestan Province, Iran, from May to August, 2016. A semi-structured valid questionnaire was used to gather information in pregnant women(n = 170).Results: About 46.5% of women in this study used TM/CAM during previous pregnancies. The majority(67%) of study participants were Arab. The Arab population showed increased use of TM/CAM during pregnancy(P = 0.014). Women with complications in former pregnancies had significantly higher incidence rate of TM/CAM use(65.8%) compared to the other group(39.6%)(P = 0.001).Conclusion: Understanding TM/CAM use and the associated factors in different ethnic groups of pregnant women will benefit the evaluation of the proper health policies and mother-infant health programs. This study contributes to the growing literature on TM/CAM, ethnic diversity and pregnant women.

Patellar tendon stress between two variations of the forward step lunge

Background: Patellar tendinopathy(PT) or "jumper's knee" is generally found in active populations that perform jumping activities. Graded exposure of patellar tendon, stress through functional exercise has been demonstrated to be effective for the treatment of PT. However, no studies have compared how anterior knee displacement variations during the commonly performed forward step lunge(FSL) affect patellar tendon stress.Methods:Twenty-five subjects(age: 22.69 ± 0.74 years; height: 169.39 ± 6.44 cm; mass: 61.55 ± 9.74 kg) performed 2 variations of an FSL with the anterior knee motion going in front of the toes(FSL-FT) and the knee remaining behind the toes(FSL-BT). Kinematic and kinetic data were used with an inverse-dynamics based static optimization technique to estimate individual muscle forces to determine patellar tendon stress during both lunge techniques. A repeated measures multivariate analysis was used to analyze these data.Results: The peak patellar tendon stress, stress impulse, quadriceps force, knee moment, knee flexion, and ankle dorsiflexion angle were significantly greater(p< 0.001) during the FSL-FT as compared to the FSL-BT. The peak patellar tendon stress rate did not differ between the FSL-FT and FSL-BT.Conclusion: The use of an FSL-FT as compared to an FSL-BT increased the load and stress on the patellar tendon. Because a graded exposure of patellar tendon loading with other closed kinetic chain exercises has proven to be effective in treating PT, consideration for the prescription of variations of the FSL and further clinical evaluation of this exercise is warranted in individuals with PT.

The coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)disease was first detected in December 2019 in Wuhan,China.This disease is currently one of the most important global health problems.The novel coronavirus COVID-19 is a respiratory illness,that has caused a deadly pandemic that is spreading rapidly around the world.It is not only a respiratory system virus that causes severe lung disease,but also a systemic disease agent that can affect all systems.People with COVID-19 disease usually have respiratory signs,however,the liver disorder is not an uncommon presentation.In addition,many studies around the world have revealed that the liver is injured to various degrees in patients with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 disease.This review mainly focuses on the impact of COVID-19 on Liver Injury at various ages.

A simple,efficient,and general method has been developed for the one-pot,three-component synthesis ofα-aminophosphonates from condensation reaction of trimethyl phosphite,aryl aldehydes and aryl amines in the presence of CoCl_2-6H_2O under solvent-free conditions.Thusα-aminophosphonates were synthesized relatively quickly in good yields at room temperature.

Introduction of protocols for mass production of Toxoplasma gondii tachyzoites of the genotype II PRU strain

Background:Few investigations of genotype II of Toxoplasma gondii,the most preva-lent form of the Toxoplasma parasite in humans,have been carried out on due to the rapid conversion of tachyzoites to bradyzoites in its life cycle.The current study aimed to create animal and in vitro models for production of the tachyzoites of the Prugniaud(PRU)genotype II strain.Methods:To develop an immunocompromised model and obtain tachyzoites of the PRU strain,BALB/c mice were orally treated with dexamethasone(10 mg/kg),cyclo-phosphamide(36 mg/kg),and cyclosporine(18 mg/kg)from 5 days prior to inocula-tion.Then,10-15 tissue cysts of PRU strain were inoculated intraperitoneally into the mice.The tachyzoites obtained from mice were then cultivated in a HeLa cell culture.The resulting yield of tachyzoites was cryopreserved in 92%fetal calf serum,8%dimethyl sulfoxide.The infectivity of these tachyzoites was evaluated using in vivo and in vitro examinations.Results:Numerous tachyzoites were observed in the peritoneal fluid of the immuno-suppressed mice within 10-15 days after inoculation,and many tachyzoites were har-vested from the HeLa cell culture.Trypan Blue staining showed 80%viability of the tachyzoites recovered from cryopreservation and this was confirmed by HeLa cell culture.In addition,mice infected intraperitoneally with the recovered tachyzoites presented with cysts in the brain after 2 months.Conclusion:We have developed an animal model for mass production of T.gondii tachyzoites of the PRU strain.This method can provide fresh viable tachyzoites of Toxoplasma gondii for use as and when required in future investigations.

Maximum Likelihood Estimation for the Pooled Repeated Partly Interval-Censored Observations Logistic Regression Model

Often in longitudinal studies, some subjects complete their follow-up visits, but others miss their visits due to various reasons. For those who miss follow-up visits, some of them might learn that the event of interest has already happened when they come back. In this case, not only are their event times interval-censored, but also their time-dependent measurements are incomplete. This problem was motivated by a national longitudinal survey of youth data. Maximum likelihood estimation (MLE) method based on expectation-maximization (EM) algorithm is used for parameter estimation. Then missing information principle is applied to estimate the variance-covariance matrix of the MLEs. Simulation studies demonstrate that the proposed method works well in terms of bias, standard error, and power for samples of moderate size. The national longitudinal survey of youth 1997 (NLSY97) data is analyzed for illustration.
