BACKGROUND: Fast track strategy in the management of patients undergoing intra-abdominal surgery of various types has emerged as a landmark approach to reduce surgical stress and accelerate recovery. This study was to evaluate the effect of fast track strategy on patients subjected to pancreaticoduo-denectomy (PD) from an individual unit during transit from low to a high volume center. METHODS: A total of 142 PD patients who had been subjected to fast track strategy between June 2008 and September 2012 were compared with 46 patients who had received convention-al surgery between January 2006 and May 2008. Comparative analysis was made of postoperative complications, postopera-tive recovery, length of hospital stay and patient readmission requirement. RESULTS: The patients subjected to fast track strategy had a faster recovery and a shorter hospital stay than those who were treated conventionally (7.8 vs 12.1 days). The intraoperative events like operative blood loss (417.9±83.8 vs 997.4 ±151.8 mL, P CONCLUSIONS: This preliminary analysis suggests that the fast track approach might be beneifcial to the well-being of the patients after PD, for it accelerates the immediate clinical recovery of patients and signiifcantly shortens their length of hospital stay.

Estimation of terrestrial biomass depends critically on reliable information about wood specific gravity of forest trees. In recent years, wood specific gravity has become more important when exploring the universality of functional traits of plants and estimating their global carbon stocks. To estimate their specific gravity, wood samples were collected from a total of 34 tree species, 30 from lower elevations and 4 from upper elevations in the Garhwal Himalayas, India. The results show that the average wood specific gravity was 0.631 （ranging between 0.275 ± 0.01 and 0.845 ± 0.03） for the species at lower elevations and 0.727 （ranging between 0.628 ± 0.02 and 0.865 ± 0.02） for the upper elevations. The average wood specific gravity for the upper elevation species was 9.6% greater than that for the species at lower elevations. Aegle marmelos among the lower elevation species and Quercus leucotrichophora among the upper elevation species had the highest wood specific gravity, which were 0.845 ± 0.03 and 0.865 ± 0.02, respectively.

The Hoffa fracture is an uncommon fracture. There is a lot of confusion about its diagnosis and management with several conflicting reports in literature. We reported a 25-year-old patient with non-union of Hoffa fracture, and meanwhile tried to develop an algorithm-based treatment for Hoffa fractures. A systematic review of the available literature was performed. Medline, Embase, the Cochrane Library and PubMed were searched for relevant articles. Fifty-five articles were reviewed, and the clinical knowledge base was summarized. The understanding of the mechanism of trauma has become more nuanced. The literature has also evolved to classify the fracture with the purpose of surgical management in mind. This can be used to plan approach and fixation with preservation of blood supply. Classification can also prognosticate the outcomes in Hoffa fracture.

BACKGROUND Connective tissue growth factor(CTGF)is a mediator of transforming growth factor-beta signaling and plays a key role in connective tissue remodeling,inflammatory processes and fibrosis in various illnesses including *** To investigate the role of CTGF in colorectal cancer(CRC)progression and to compare the CTGF expression with different clinicopathological *** Real-time polymerase chain reaction,immunohistochemistry and Western blotting was performed to evaluate the CTGF expression and the results were statistically analyzed against the clinicopathological variables of patient data using STATA software version *** CTGF expression levels in tumor specimens were significantly higher than their paired normal *** higher protein expression levels showed a significant association with smoking,staging,tumor grade,invasion depth,necrosis of tumor tissue,and both lymphovascular and perineural *** per the cox regression model and classification tree analysis,tumor-nodemetastasis stage and perineural invasion were important predictors for CTGF expression and prognosis of CRC *** analysis indicated that CTGF overexpression was associated with poorer overall and disease-free *** Expression of CTGF was increased in CRC and was linked with poor overall and disease-free survival of CRC *** findings support prior observations and thus CTGF may be a possible prognostic marker in CRC.

The overwhelming use of rat models in nerve regeneration studies is likely to induce skewness in treatment *** address the problem,this study was conducted in 8 adult guinea pigs of either sex to investigate the suitability of guinea pig as an alternative model for nerve regeneration studies.A crush injury was inflicted to the sciatic nerve of the left limb,which led to significant decrease in the pain perception and neurorecovery up to the 4th *** of foot print and shortening of toe spread were observed in the paw after nerve injury.A 3.49 ± 0.35 fold increase in expression of neuropilin 1（NRP1） gene and 2.09 ± 0.51 fold increase in neuropilin 2（NRP2） gene were recorded 1 week after nerve injury as compared to the normal *** of gastrocnemius muscle weight and volume of the experimental limb to control limb showed more than 50% decrease on the 30 th ***,vacuolated appearance of the nerve was observed with presence of degenerated myelin debris in digestion *** muscle also showed degenerative *** electron microscopy revealed loose and rough arrangement of connective tissue fibrils and presence of large spherical globules in crushed sciatic *** findings suggest that guinea pigs could be used as an alternative animal model for nerve regeneration studies and might be preferred over rats due to their cooperative nature while recording different parameters.

Identification of quantitative trait loci(QTLs)controlling yield and yield-related traits in rice was performed in the F_(2) mapping population derived from parental rice genotypes DHMAS and K343.A total of 30 QTLs governing nine different traits were identified using the composite interval mapping(CIM)*** QTLs were mapped for number of tillers per plant on chromosomes 1(2 QTLs),2 and 3;three QTLs for panicle number per plant on chromosomes 1(2 QTLs)and 3;four QTLs for plant height on chromosomes 2,4,5 and 6;one QTL for spikelet density on chromosome 5;four QTLs for spikelet fertility percentage(SFP)on chromosomes 2,3 and 5(2 QTLs);two QTLs for grain length on chromosomes 1 and 8;three QTLs for grain width on chromosomes1,3 and 8;three QTLs for 1000-grain weight(TGW)on chromosomes 1,4 and 8 and six QTLs for yield per plant(YPP)on chromosomes 2(3 QTLs),4,6 and *** of the QTLs were detected on chromosome 2,so further studies on chromosome 2 could help unlock some new chapters of QTL for this cross of rice *** QTLs elucidating high phenotypic variance can be used for marker-assisted selection(MAS)***,the exploitation of information regarding molecular markers tightly linked to QTLs governing these traits will facilitate future crop improvement strategies in rice.

Room temperature positive magnetoresistance(PMR)in graphene is a conventional phenomenon but we observed large negative magnetoresistance(NMR)in graphene foam(GF)/polydimethylsiloxane(GF/PDMS)at room-mperature for the first *** largest NMR^35%was detected at 250 K,while PMR is observed below 200 ***,PMR at all temperatures is observed in regular GF specimens,hence,NMR is the result of the infiltration with the electrically insulating *** interference and wavefunction shrinkage model has been employed to understand the transport mechanism in GF/PDMS.A critical temperature^224 Kfor switching between NMR and PMR is observed at the crystallization-mperature of PDMS,suggesti ng a cha nge in polymer chai n con formation may be a major reason leading to NMR in GF/PDMS specimens thus role of mechanical properties of PDMS in NMR cannot be ignored and observed locally via specially;resolved atomic force *** addition,storage modulus and heat flow study shows similar transition temperature(~200 K)of NMR to PMR and provide an evidence of mechanical stable *** is known,large,tunable,and unsaturated NMR at room temperature is very useful for future facile practical shapeable magnetoelectronic devices.

Inspired by the availability of recent experimental as well as theoretical data on the energy levels of odd-mass^151-161Pm and odd-odd^154,156Pm,we applied the theoretical framework of the projected shell model to further understand the nuclear structure of these *** calculations closely reproduced the experimental data reported for the yrast bands of these isotopes by assuming an axial(prolate)deformation of^*** properties along the yrast line,such as transition energies and transition probabilities,have also been *** diagrams are plotted to understand their intrinsic multi-quasiparticle structure,which turn out to be dominated by 1-quasiparticle bands for the odd-mass Pm isotopes and 2-quasiparticle bands for the doubly-odd Pm isotopes under *** present study not only confirms the recently reported experimental/theoretical data,but also extends the already available information on the energy levels and adds new information regarding the reduced transition probabilities.

Present study reports the PGE-geochemistry of mantle peridotites and Nd-isotope geochemistry of arc related mafic rocks from the Indus Suture Zone(ISZ),western *** total PGE concentration of the Shergol and Suru Valley peridotites(∑PGE=96-180 ppb)is much higher than that of the primitive mantle and global ophiolitic mantle *** studied peridotites show concave upward PGE-distribution patterns with higher palladium-group PGE/Iridium-group PGE ratios(i.e.,0.8-2.9)suggesting that the partial melting is not the sole factor responsible for the evolution of these *** observed PGE-distribution patterns are distinct from residual/refractory mantle peridotites,which have concave downward or flat PGE-distribution *** enrichment of palladium-group PGE as well as other whole-rock incompatible elements(e.g.,LILE and LREE)and higher Pd/Ir ratio(1.1-5.9)reflects that these peridotites have experienced fluid/melt interaction in a supra-subduction zone(SSZ)tectonic ***,the Shergol mafic intrusives and Dras mafic volcanics,associated with the studied peridotites,have high^(143)Nd/^(144)Nd ratios(i.e.,0.512908-0.513078 and 0.512901-0.512977,respectively)and positiveε_(Nd)(t)(calculated for t=140 Ma)values(i.e.,+5.3 to+8.6 and+5.1 to+6.6,respectively),indicating derivation from depleted mantle sources within an intra-oceanic arc setting,similar to Spongtang and Nidar ophiolites from other parts of Ladakh *** transition from SSZ-type Shergol and Suru Valley peridotites to Early Cretaceous tholeiitic Shergol mafic intrusives followed by tholeiitic to calc-alkaline Dras mafic volcanics within the Neo-Tethys Ocean exhibit characteristics of subduction initiation mechanism analogous to the Izu-Bonin-Mariana arc system within western Pacific.

Tin telluride(SnTe)overwhelmingly continues to be studied owing to its promising thermoelectric properties,tunable electronic structure,and its potential as an alternate to toxic lead telluride(PbTe)based *** this research,we engineer the electronic properties of SnTe by co-doping Mn and Bi below their individual solubility *** First principles density functio nal theory studies reveal that both Bi and Mn introduce resonance states,thereby increasing the density of states near the Fermi level leading to enhanced Seebeck *** unique combination of using two resonant dopants to introduce flatter bands is effective in achieving higher performance at lower tempe ratures manifesting into a large Seebeck value of~91μV/K at room temperature in the present *** elements optimally co-doped results in a very high power factor value of~24.3μW/cmK^(2) at 773 K when compared to other high performance SnTe based materials.A zT of~0.93 at 773 K is achieved by tuning the proportion of the co-dopants Mn and Bi in *** hardness value of pristine SnTe was also seen to increase after *** a result,synergistic optimized doping proves to be a suitable means for obtaining thermoelectric materials of superior characteristics without the need for heavy doping.
