Background:Forests perform various important ecosystem functions that contribute to ecosystem services.In many parts of the world,forest management has shifted from a focus on timber production to multi-purpose forestry,combining timber production with the supply of other forest ecosystem services.However,it is unclear which forest types provide which ecosystem services and to what extent forests primarily managed for timber already supply multiple ecosystem services.Based on a comprehensive dataset collected across 150 forest plots in three regions differing in management intensity and species composition,we develop models to predict the potential supply of 13 ecosystem services.We use those models to assess the level of multifunctionality of managed forests at the national level using national forest inventory data.Results:Looking at the potential supply of ecosystem services,we found trade-offs(e.***.between both bark beetle control or dung decomposition and both productivity or soil carbon stocks)as well as synergies(e.***.for temperature regulation,carbon storage and culturally interesting plants)across the 53 most dominant forest types in Germany.No single forest type provided all ecosystem services equally.Some ecosystem services showed comparable levels across forest types(e.***.decomposition or richness of saprotrophs),while others varied strongly,depending on forest structural attributes(e.***.phosphorous availability or cover of edible plants)or tree species composition(e.***.potential nitrification activity).Variability in potential supply of ecosystem services was only to a lesser extent driven by environmental conditions.However,the geographic variation in ecosystem function supply across Germany was closely linked with the distribution of main tree species.Conclusions:Our results show that forest multifunctionality is limited to subsets of ecosystem services.The importance of tree species composition highlights that a lack of multifunctionality at the stand level can be compensated by managing forests at the

Silk fibroin is a biomaterial with multiple beneficial properties for use in regenerative medicine and tissue engineering.When dissolving and processing the reconstituted silk fibroin solution by electrospinning,the arrangement and size of fibers can be manifold varied and according fiber diameters reduced to the nanometer range.Such nonwovens show high porosity as well as potential biocompatibility.Usually,electrospinning of most biomaterials demands for the application of additives,which enable stable electrospinning by adjusting viscosity,and are intended to evaporate during processing or to be washed out afterwards.However,the use of such additives increases costs and has to be taken into account in terms of biological risks when used for biomedical applications.In this study,we explored the possibilities of additive-free electrospinning of pure fibroin nonwovens and tried to optimize process parameters to enable stable processing.We used natural silk derived from the mulberry silkworm Bombyx mori.After degumming,the silk fibroin was dissolved and the viscosity of the spinning solution was controlled by partial evaporation of the initial solving agent.This way,we were able to completely avoid the use of additives and manufacture nonwovens,which potentially offer higher biocompatibility and reduced immunogenicity.Temperature and relative humidity during electrospinning were systematically varied(25–35°C,25–30%RH).In a second step,the nonwovens optionally underwent methanol treatment to initiate beta-sheet formation in order to increase structural integrity and strength.Comprehensive surface analysis on the different nonwovens was performed using scanning electron microscopy and supplemented by additional mechanical testing.Cytotoxicity was evaluated using BrdU-assay,XTT-assay,LDH-assay and live-dead staining.Our findings were,that an increase of temperature and relative humidity led to unequal fiber diameters and defective nonwovens.Resistance to penetration decreased accordingly.The most uniform fiber diamete

Alzheimer's disease(AD)is the most common cause of dementia,costing about 1%of the global economy.Failures of clinical trials targeting amyloid-βprotein(Aβ),a key trigger of AD,have been explained by drug inefficiency regardless of the mechanisms of amyloid neurotoxicity,which are very difficult to address by available technologies.Here,we combine two imaging modalities that stand at opposite ends of the electromagnetic spectrum,and therefore,can be used as complementary tools to assess structural and chemical information directly in a single neuron.Combining label-free super-resolution microspectroscopy for sub-cellular imaging based on novel optical photothermal infrared(O-PTIR)and synchrotron-based X-ray fluorescence(S-XRF)nano-imaging techniques,we capture elemental distribution and fibrillary forms of amyloid-βproteins in the same neurons at an unprecedented resolution.Our results reveal that in primary AD-like neurons,iron clusters co-localize with elevated amyloidβ-sheet structures and oxidized lipids.Overall,our O-PTIR/S-XRF results motivate using high-resolution multimodal microspectroscopic approaches to understand the role of molecular structures and trace elements within a single neuronal cell.

BACkGROUND:Ectopic pancreas is defined as pancreatic tissue found outside its usual anatomical position,with no ductal or vascular communication with the native pancreas. We describe a case of ectopic pancreas of the small bowel and mesentery causing recurrent episodes of pancreatitis, initially suspected on computed tomography(CT)and magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography(MRCP),and confirmed on histological review of the resection. METHODS:A 67-year-old woman presented with clinical symptoms and biochemical evidence of pancreatitis.She had similar episodes over the past 30 years with unrevealing investigations,and was concluded to have idiopathic pancreatitis. She underwent CT and MRCP,with findings suggestive of ectopic pancreas,a diagnosis confirmed on histology of the resection. RESULTS:MRCP identified a mass in the proximal small bowel mesentery isointense to the native pancreas,with a small duct draining into a proximal jejunal loop.The resected specimen consisted of normal parenchyma with lobulated acinar tissue with scattered islets of Langerhans,an occasional ductular structure,and admixed areas of adipose tissue.The patient remained asymptomatic with normal biochemistry six months post-operatively. CONCLUSION:In an individual with abdominal pain,elevated serum amylase/lipase,but imaging findings of a normal native pancreas,ectopic pancreatitis should be considered,and can be evaluated by CT and MRCP.

Early microrecanalization of vas deferens following biodegradable graft implantation in bilaterally vasectomized rats

We evaluated a biodegradable graft for reconstruction of rat vasa deferentia with long obstructed or missing segments. A total of 47 Sprague-Dawley rats underwent bilateral vasectomy and were divided into groups according to length of the vas deferens affected （0.5, 1, 1.5 cm）. After 8 weeks, poly-（D,L-lactide）（PDLA） grafts were used to reconnect the vas deferens, Grafts and adjoining vasa deferentia were excised 8 and 12 weeks later and evaluated microscopically. At 8 weeks, microscopic changes included a robust inflammatory response around the grafts. All grafts were still intact but in the early stages of degradation. No microtubules, indicative of vas deferens recanalization, were identified. One specimen showed evidence of healing and neovascularization at the interface zone between the vas deferens and the graft. At 12 weeks, grafts were further degraded but still present. Microscopic evaluation showed decreased inflammation. Seven specimens showed neovascularization at the interface zone; two of these showed distinct epithelialized vas deferens microcanals at the graft edges. One specimen showed a microcanal spanning the entire 0.5-cm graft. A time period of 8 weeks is not ample enough for vas deferens regeneration in the setting of a biodegradable PDLA graft; however, early evidence of re-growth was seen at 12 weeks. A longer healing time should permit further biodegradation of the graft, as well as re-growth and possible eventual reconnection of the vas deferens, allowing passage of sperm. These findings suggest a potential role for biodegradable grafts in the reconstruction ofvas deferens with long obstructed segments.

Olanzapine-associated hypothermia in an adolescent anorexic girl

This is a 12th case report on olanzapine induced hypothermia and based on the results of literature search, by far is the youngest case ever is reported. The hypothermia occurred during the refeeding phase, despite a weight gain since increasing the dosage from 5 mg to 7.5 mg olanzapine. Our recent literature search found 11 published cases of olanzapine treatment associated with hypothermia. Olanzapine acts on serotonin or dopamin receptors and has antagonistic properties on histaminergic, muscarinic and α-adrenergic receptors. Olanzapine mediates the hypothermic effect through antagonism at receptors other than dopamine.

The human spinal column is a dynamic,segmented,bony,and cartilaginous structure that protects the neurologic system and simultaneously provides balance and flexibility.Children with developmental disorders that affect the patterning or shape of the spine can be at risk of neurologic and other physiologic dysfunctions.The most common developmental disorder of the spine is scoliosis,a lateral deformity in the shape of the spinal column.Scoliosis may be part of the clinical spectrum that is observed in many developmental disorders,but typically presents as an isolated symptom in otherwise healthy adolescent children.Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis(AIS)has defied understanding in part due to its genetic complexity.Breakthroughs have come from recent genome-wide association studies(GWAS)and next generation sequencing(NGS)of human AIS cohorts,as well as investigations of animal models.These studies have identified genetic associations with determinants of cartilage biogenesis and development of the intervertebral disc(IVD).Current evidence suggests that a fraction of AIS cases may arise from variation in factors involved in the structural integrity and homeostasis of the cartilaginous extracellular matrix(ECM).Here,we review the development of the spine and spinal cartilages,the composition of the cartilage ECM,the so-called"matrisome"and its functions,and the players involved in the genetic architecture of AIS.We also propose a molecular model by which the cartilage matrisome of the IVD contributes to AIS susceptibility.

Farmer Participatory Evaluation of Nursery Bed Treatments for the Control of Root-knot Nematodes [Meloidogynejavanica （Treub） Chitwood and Meloidogyne incognita （kofoid and White） Chitwood] in Smallholder Farms in kenya

Root-knot nematodes (Meloidogyne spp.) constrain the production of high value vegetable crops, such as tomato, on smallholder farms in kenya. For several years, control of root-knot nematodes largely depended on the use of synthetic nematicides, most of which have been banned due to their toxicity to humans and the environment. Farmer-participatory trials were established, for two consecutive growing seasons on farmers’ fields infested with root-knot nematodes (Meloidogyne javanica and Meloidogyne incognita), at two sites in central kenya (Maragua and kirinyaga districts), representing two contrasting group of farmers (low-input and high-input). The trials aimed at evaluating the potential of using biological control agents (BCAs), i. e. Pochonia chlamydosporia and Pasteuria penetrans, antagonistic plants (Crotalaria grahamiana and Tagetes minuta), "trash burning" and chemical control (dazomet 98% = Basamid? Granular) in the management of root-knot nematodes in tomato nursery beds, and quantify the associated net benefits, compared to an untreated control. Crotalaria grahamiana, "trash burning" and dazomet, significantly (P knot nematodes in the soil in nursery beds during the first season at karigui-ini, but there was no significant (P > 0.05) increase in yield after transplanting tomato seedlings from the respective treatment. Similarly, one of the BCAs (P. chlamydosporia), was effectively transferred to the field with seedlings from the BCA-treated nursery beds, but there was no significant (P > 0.05) increase in yield due to slow proliferation of the BCA, after transplanting. Participatory partial budgets were successfully developed with smallholder farmers, and proved to be a vital tool in making informed decisions on management options for root-knot nematodes.
