Instrumented assisted soft tissue mobilization vs extracorporeal shock wave therapy in treatment of myofascial pain syndrome

BACKGROUND Active myofascial trigger points(TrPs)often occur in the upper region of the upper trapezius(UT)*** TrPs can be a significant source of neck,shoulder,and upper back pain and *** TrPs and their related pain and disability can adversely affect an individual’s everyday routine functioning,work-related productivity,and general quality of *** To investigate the effects of instrument assisted soft tissue mobilization(IASTM)vs extracorporeal shock wave therapy(ESWT)on the TrPs of the UT *** A randomized,single-blind,comparative clinical study was conducted at the Medical Center of the Egyptian Railway Station in *** patients(28 females and 12 males),aged between 20-years-old and 40-years-old,with active myofascial TrPs in the UT muscle were randomly assigned to two equal groups(A and B).Group A received IASTM,while group B received *** group was treated twice weekly for 2 *** groups received muscle energy technique for the UT *** were evaluated twice(pre-and posttreatment)for pain intensity using the visual analogue scale and for pain pressure threshold(PPT)using a pressure *** Comparing the pre-and post-treatment mean values for all variables for group A,there were significant differences in pain intensity for TrP1 and TrP2(P=0.0001)and PPT for TrP1(P=0.0002)and TrP2(P=0.0001).Also,for group B,there were significant differences between the pre-and post-treatment pain intensity for TrP1 and TrP2 and PPT for TrP1 and TrP2(P=0.0001).There were no significant differences between the two groups in the post-treatment mean values of pain intensity for TrP1(P=0.9)and TrP2(P=0.76)and PPT for TrP1(P=0.09)and for TrP2(P=0.91).CONCLUSION IASTM and ESWT are effective methods for improving pain and PPT in patients with UT muscle *** is no significant difference between either treatment method.

Role of eIF4E on epithelial-mesenchymal transition,invasion,and chemoresistance of prostate cancer cells

Dear Editor,Prostate cancer(PCa)is the most common cancer and second leading cause of cancer death for men in the United States[1].PCa with similar Gleason score has been reported to show substantial interpatient heterogeneity and differential prostate cancer-specific mortality rate[2].Such heterogeneity in PCa often results in different therapeutic responses among patients,including therapy resistance,therapeutic failure,relapse,and metastasis[3].Numerous oncogenes,such as eukaryotic translation initiation factor 4E(eIF4E),have been reported to be involved in epithelial-mesenchymal transition(EMT)and/or drug resistance in PCa[4].We previously demonstrated that eIF4E overexpression was involved in chemoresistance of triple-negative breast cancer and silencing eIF4E significantly inhibited cancer cell proliferation and sensitized cancer cells to chemotherapy in a patient-derived xenograft mouse model[5].In addition,eIF4E phosphorylation is known to stimulate the translation of matrix metalloproteinase 3(MMP3)and Snail mRNAs to promote EMT in PCa[6].Furthermore,the complexity and dynamic nature of EMT contributes to the heterogeneity of aggressive cancer cells[7].The precise role of eIF4E in EMT,invasion,and chemoresistance in PCa is still to be established with consideration of different subpopulations in order to develop precision medicine for *** this work,we aimed to explore the role of eIF4E in EMT,invasion,and chemoresistance in PCa for establishing a promising new therapeutic strategy by regulating eIF4E expression using(1-aminoethyl)iminobis[Noleicylcysteinyl-1-aminoethyl)propionamide](ECO)/small interfering RNA(siRNA)nanoparticles previously developed in our lab[8-10]for PCa therapy in the context of tumor heterogeneity.

We demonstrate an original method based on controlled oxidation for creating high-quality tunnel junctions between superconducting A1 reservoirs and InAs semiconductor nanowires （NWs）. We show clean tunnel characteristics with a current suppression by 〉4 orders of magnitude for a junction bias well below the A1 gap of △0≈ 200 μeV. The experimental data agree well with the Bardeen- Cooper-Schrieffer theoretical expectations for a superconducting tunnel junction. The studied devices employ small-scale tunnel contacts functioning as thermometers as well as larger electrodes that provide proof-of-principle active cooling of the electron distribution in the NWs. A peak refrigeration of approximately δT = 10 mK is achieved at a bath temperature of Tbath≈ 250-350 mK for our prototype devices. This method introduces important perspectives for the investigation of the thermoelectric effects in semiconductor nanostructures and for nanoscale refrigeration.

A Quality Assurance Model for Airborne Safety-Critical Software

The tragic nature of safety-critical software failure’s consequences makes high quality and extreme reliability requirements in such types of software of paramount importance. Far too many accidents have been caused by software failure error or where such failure/error was part of the problem. Safety-critical software is widely applied in diverse areas, ranging from medical equipment to airborne systems. Currently, the trend in the use of safety-critical software in the aerospace industry is mostly concentrated on avionic systems. While standards for certification and development of safety-critical software have been developed by authorities and the industry, very little research has been done to address safety-critical software quality. In this paper, we study safety-critical software embedded in airborne systems. We propose a lifecycle specially modeled for the development of safety-critical software in compliance with the DO-178B standard and a software quality assurance (SQA) model based on a set of four acceptance criteria that builds quality into safety-critical software throughout its development.

Extensive evolution analysis of the global chikungunya virus strains revealed the origination of CHIKV epidemics in Pakistan in 2016

Chikungunya virus(CHIKV) is a mosquito-borne virus that causes epidemics widely in the world especially in the tropical and subtropical regions. Phylogenetic analysis has found that the CHIKV lineages were associated with the spatial and temporal distributions, which were related to the virus adaption to the major mosquito species and their distributions. In this study, we reported the complete genome sequences of eight CHIKV isolates from the outbreak in Pakistan last year. Then we reviewed the evolutionary history using extensive phylogenetic analysis, analyzed lineagespecific substitutions in viral proteins, and characterized the spreading pathway of CHIKV strains including the Pakistani strains. The results showed that the Pakistani stains belonged to the *** sub-lineage and derived from India. The genetic properties of the Pakistani strains including the adaptive substitution to vectors were further characterized, and the potential risks from the occurrence of CHIKV infection in Pakistan were discussed. These results provided better understanding of CHIKV evolution and transmission in the world and revealed the possible origination of the CHIKV outbreak and epidemic in Pakistan, which would promote the disease prevention and control in the identified countries and territories with the history of CHIKV infections as well as new regions with potential risk of CHIKV outbreaks.

Antimicrobial activity of latex silver nanoparticles using Calotropis procera

Objective:To synthesize silver nanoparticles(AgNPs) by green methods using scrum latex of Calotropis procera at 80 ℃ and evaluate them against bacteria,dermatophytes and phytopathogenic fungi comparing with the activity of untreated ***:The synthesis of AgNPs was performed by mixing 3%latex scrum extract with the same volume of silver nitrate(2 mmol/L) solution in round flask and heating in water bath at80 ℃.Characterization of silver particles were determined using UV-vis spectrophotometer,transmission electron microscopy(TEM),X-ray diffraction and Fourier transform infrared *** antimicrobial activity of the green synthesized AgNPs was determined against bacteria,dermatophytes and phytopathogenic fungi and compared to the crude untreated latex by agar-well diffusion ***:Biosynthesis of latex silver nanoparticles was successfully obtained by green *** formation of AgNPs has been confirmed by UV-vis,TEM microscopy.X-ray diffraction and Fourier transform infrared *** analysis showed that synthesized AgNPs are highly stable spherical shaped particles,well dispersed with a diameter ranged from 4 nm up to 25 nm and an average size of 12.33 *** showed strong antibacterial activity against Gram-negative bacteria(Escherichia coli,Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Serratia sp.) and antifungal activity against Trichophyton rubrum,Candida albicans and Aspergillus ***:It can be concluded that serum latex of Calotropis pmcera was found to display strong potential for the synthesis of AgNPs as antimicrobial agents through rapid reduction of silver ions(Ag^+ to Ag^0).The green synthesized AgNPs were found to show higher antimicrobial efficacy than crude latex.
