The present study proposes a novel and simplified methodology to assess the seismic bearing capacity(SBC) of a shallow strip footing by incorporating strength non-linearity arising due to partial saturation of a soil matrix. Furthermore, developed methodology incorporates the modal response analysis of soil layers to assess SBC. A constant matric suction distribution profile has been considered throughout the depth of the soil. The Van Genuchten equation and corresponding fitting parameters have been considered to quantify matric suction in the analysis. SBC has been obtained for three different geomaterials;viz. sand, fly ash and clay, based on their predominant grain size and diverse soil water characteristics curve(SWCC) attributes. Variation of SBC with different modes of vibration and damping ratio are reported for ranges of matric suction pertinent to the geomaterials considered in the study. The relative significance of matric suction on SBC has been reported for suction values within the transition zone of each geomaterial. It is observed that the SBC of sand is drastically reduced, with matric suction reaching beyond the residual suction value. The SBC of fly ash remains constant beyond the residual suction value, whereas the SBC of clay shows an increasing trend toward the practical range of matric suction values.

Traumatic brain injury(TBI)is a mechanical injury to the brain,which can be sustained due to falls,accidents,contact sports or in combat situation.It is a serious health problem-affecting people of all ages worldwide.As per the recent epidemiological study,more than 55 million people suffer from TBI annually(GBD 2016 Traumatic Brain Injury and Spinal Cord Injury Collaborators,2019),and its prevalence has increased by almost 8.4%between 1990 and 2016(GBD 2016 Traumatic Brain Injury and Spinal Cord Injury Collaborators,2019).Depending on severity,TBI can lead to premature death and disability.

The plasma shielding effect is one of the major weaknesses of laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy(LIBS)as it causes non-linearity in signal strength.Although LIBS is typically carried out in constant laser energy,this non-linearity causes a reduction in sensitivity.In this work,we systematically examine laser-induced plasma,formed by two different excitation source modes,i.***.single pulse(SP)-excitation and single-beam-splitting double-pulse(SBS-DP)-excitation over Zr-2.5%Nb alloy.The two most important plasma parameters influencing the emission line intensity,plasma temperature(Te)and electron density(Ne)were studied and compared for both modes of laser excitation.Comparison of the results conclusively demonstrates that due to the splitting of the laser energy in the SBS-DP mode,the plasma shielding effect is significantly reduced.The reduced plasma shielding translates to an increased laser–sample coupling under SBS-DP mode.Temporal imaging of the total intensity of the laser-induced plasma in both excitation modes was also studied.The study shows how the plasma shielding effect can be reduced to improve the analytical quality of the LIBS methodology.

This paper presents a group-based dynamic stuck-at fault diagnosis scheme intended for resistive randomaccess memory(ReRAM).Traditional static random-access memory,dynamic random-access memory,NAND,and NOR flash memory are limited by their scalability,power,package density,and so forth.Next-generation memory types like ReRAMs are considered to have various advantages such as high package density,non-volatility,scalability,and low power consumption,but cell reliability has been a problem.Unreliable memory operation is caused by permanent stuck-at faults due to extensive use of write-or memory-intensive workloads.An increased number of stuck-at faults also prematurely limit chip lifetime.Therefore,a cellular automaton(CA)based dynamic stuck-at fault-tolerant design is proposed here to combat unreliable cell functioning and variable cell lifetime issues.A scalable,block-level fault diagnosis and recovery scheme is introduced to ensure readable data despite multi-bit stuck-at faults.The scheme is a novel approach because its goal is to remove all the restrictions on the number and nature of stuck-at faults in general fault conditions.The proposed scheme is based on Wolfram’s null boundary and periodic boundary CA theory.Various special classes of CAs are introduced for 100%fault tolerance:single-lengthcycle single-attractor cellular automata(SACAs),single-length-cycle two-attractor cellular automata(TACAs),and single-length-cycle multiple-attractor cellular automata(MACAs).The target micro-architectural unit is designed with optimal space overhead.

Objective:To evaluate the in vivo wound healing activity of Acanthus leucostachyus leaf extracts using an excision wound model in mice.Methods:Mice were divided into two groups of six animals in each group:the control group and the Acanthus leucostachyus extract-treated group.Healing potential was evaluated by determination of physical parameters(contraction rate,epithelialization period,and tensile strength),biochemical parameters(protein,DNA,and hydroxyproline content),the expression of growth factor and pro-inflammatory cytokines,as well as histological and ultrastructural observations.Results:Treatment with Acanthus leucostachyus leaf extracts markedly increased the rate of wound contraction,tensile strength,the concentrations of protein,DNA,and hydroxyproline,and the expression of growth factor,as well as promoted epithelialization,compared to the control.In addition,Acanthus leucostachyus leaf extracts significantly reduced the expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines.Histological and ultrastructural studies revealed the presence of thicker epithelial layer and smoother surface topography in the extract-treated group compared to the control.Conclusions:Acanthus leucostachyus leaf extracts show potent wound-healing activity and can be used as a wound healing agent.

A better understanding of the mixing behavior of excited turbulent mixing layers is critical to a number of aerospace applications.Previous studies of excited turbulent mixing layers focused on single frequency excitation or the excitation with fundamental and its second harmonic frequency.There is a lack of detailed studies on applying low and higher frequency excitation.In this study,we have performed large-eddy simulations of periodically excited turbulent mixing layers.The excitation consists of a fundamental frequency and its third harmonic.We have used phase-averaging to identify the vortex structure and strength in the mixing layer,and we have studied the vortex dynamics.Two different vortex paring mechanisms are observed depending on the phase shift between the two excitation frequencies.The influence of these two mechanisms on the mixing of a passive scalar is also studied.It is found that exciting the mixing layer with these low and high frequencies has initially an adverse influence on the mixing process;however,it improves the mixing further downstream of the splitter plate with the excitation using a phase shift ofΔφ=πshowing the best mixing performance.The present works shed lights on the fundamental vortex dynamics,and has great potential for aeronautical,automotive and combustion engineering applications.

We investigate the dynamical behavior of a magnetized,dissipative accretion flow around a rapidly rotating black hole.We solve the magnetohydrodynamic equations and calculate the transonic accretion solutions which may contain discontinuous shock transitions.We investigate the effect ofζ-parameter(parametrizing the radial variation of the toroidal magnetic flux advection rate)on the dynamical behavior of shocks.For a rapidly rotating black hole and for fixed injection parameters at the outer edge,we show that stationary shocks are sustained in the global magnetized accretion solutions for a wide range ofζand accretion rate(˙m).To investigate the observational implications,we consider dissipative shocks and estimate the maximum accessible energy from the post-shock corona(PSC)for nine stellar mass black hole candidates.We compare this with the observed radio jet kinetic power reported in the literature,whenever available.We find close agreement between the estimated values from our model and those reported in the literature.

This work reports the first discovery of（negative） spectral lags in X-ray emission below 10 ke V from the gamma ray binary LS I＋61？303 during large flaring episodes using Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer（RXTE） observations. It is found from the RXTE data that during the flares, low energy（3–5 ke V） variations lead the higher energy（8–10 ke V） variations by a few tens of seconds whereas no significant time lag is observed during the non-flaring states. The observed spectral lag features for flaring events suggest that inverse Compton scattering may be operating, at least in some part of the system. Another possibility is that the sites of particle acceleration may be different for flaring and non-flaring events such as in the microquasar model, in which the flaring radiation may come from hot spots sitting above the black hole while steady state emissions are due to the jets.
