This study is to prepare chitosan beads modified with sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) to effectively remove Cr(III) from an aqueous solution. The characterizations of SDS-chitosan by scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDS), Fourier transform-infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) proved the successful synthesis of the adsorbent. The adsorption of Cr(III) on the SDS material was investigated by varying experimental conditions such as pH, contact time and adsorbent dosage. The maximum adsorption capacity of SDS-chitosan for Cr(III) was estimated to be 3.42 mg?g-1. The results of adsorption kinetics and isothermal models show that the adsorption process conforms to the pseudo-second-order and Langmuir isotherm models, indicating that the adsorption is single-layer chemical adsorption. Thermodynamic analyses indicate that the adsorption of Cr(III) is an endothermic reaction. These results show that the new adsorbent has obvious application prospect to eliminate Cr(III).

Objective: This study aimed to assess the relationship of cognition, depression and anxiety to glycemic control in elders with diabetes. DM is a chronic medical condition. Its control depends on adherence to medical therapy and making decisions related to lifestyle changes. This decision making capacity is affected by many factors including cognition and psychological status. Design: It was a case control study. Setting: It was done in Ain Shams University Hospital inpatients and DM outpatient clinic, Cairo, Egypt. Participants: Of the one hundred diabetic patients aged ≥ 60 years, 50 had Hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) ≥ 7.5 (cases) and 50 had Hb A1c 7.5 (controls). Measurements: Cognition was assessed using minimental status examination (MMSE) test, Mattis Organic Mental Syndrome Screening Examination (MOMSSE) and Cambridge Cognitive Examination (CAMCOG) test. Geriatric depression scale-15 (GDS-15) was performed for depression assessment, while anxiety was assessed by DSM IV criteria. Laboratory investigations included: fasting blood sugar (FBS), post-prandial blood sugar (PPBS), glycated haemoglobin (Hb A1c), low density lipoprotein (LDL), high-density lipoprotein (HDL), total cholesterol, and triglycerides (TG). Results: Significant difference was found between the two groups regarding scores of cognitive tests: MMSE score (p = 0.004);below average (p = 0.02) and average scores (p = 0.05) of MOMSSE;CAMCOG score (p = 0.015);and CAMCOG divided items score including orientation (p = 0.003), comprehension (p = 0.005), expression (p = 0.020), attention (p = 0.002), and abstraction (p = 0.008) as well as depression screening scores (P = 0.002). Using Receiver Operating Characteristic, CAMCOG had better sensitivity and MOMSSE had better specificity. Conclusion: Cognitive impairment was associated with poor glycemic control, and impairment in attention and abstraction, related to executive function, functions were found to be associated with poor glycemic control. Objectives: The radial artery is used as a second arterial conduit in coronary artery bypass surgery. However, concerns exist about the thermal injury incurred to the radial artery during endoscopic harvest. We sought to assess this effect both histologically and radiologically. Methods: From February 2015 to March 2016, 50 consecutive patients undergoing coronary artery bypass surgery utilizing endoscopically harvested radial artery were prospectively studied. Computerized tomography coronary angiography scan was performed randomly in 8 patients who also had their respective radial artery analyzed histologically at the time of harvest. Standard coronary angiography was also performed in 4 additional patients driven by symptoms recurrence. Results: All patients were available for follow up at 1 year following the surgery. There was no mortality during follow-up. Three patients (6%) developed transient complications in the harvest arm which resolved. All radial arteries were patent on follow-up imaging. Histological examination showed integrity of the arterial wall, intact endothelial lining, patent lumens and no significant pathological abnormalities. Conclusion: The use of endoscopic radial artery harvest was associated with few self-limiting morbidities and excellent patency rates. In addition, there was no evidence of any thermal or traumatic injuries sustained to the radial arteries when examined histologically. The use of endoscopically harvested radial arteries appears safe with excellent results.

The paper investigates the numerical solution of the magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) boundary layer flow of non-Newtonian Casson fluid on a moving wedge with heat and mass transfer. The effects of thermal diffusion and diffusion thermo with induced magnetic field are taken in consideration. The governing partial differential equations are transformed into nonlinear ordinary differential equations by applying the similarity transformation and solved numerically by using finite difference method (FDM). The effects of various governing parameters, on the velocity, temperature and concentration are displayed through graphs and discussed numerically. In order to verify the accuracy of the present results, we have compared these results with the analytical solutions by using the differential transform method (DTM). It is observed that this approximate numerical solution is in good agreement with the analytical solution. Furthermore, comparisons of the present results with previously published work show that the present results have high accuracy.

In this work, the peristaltic motion of a nano non-Newtonian fluid which obeys Carreau model through a porous medium inside an asymmetric channel is investigated. The hall current effects with Joule heating and viscous dissipation are considered. The problem is modulated mathematically by a set of nonlinear partial differential equations which describe the conservation of mass, momentum, energy and concentration of nanoparticles. The non-dimensional form of these equations is simplified under the assumption of long wavelength and low Reynolds number, and then resulting equations of coupled nonlinear differential equations are tackled numerically with appropriate boundary conditions. Graphical results are presented for dimensionless velocity, temperature, concentration and pressure gradient in order to illustrate the variations of various parameters of this problem on these obtained solutions.

endurance running became a mass phenomenon throughout the 1980s around the world. Therefore, we wanted to investigate the participation and performance trends of runners in a half marathon. We analyzed a database containing the number of people who signed up and finished as well as age group, gender, placement, and runtime for all runners from a half marathon between 2003 and 2009. More than 35,000 runners participated in the half marathon, with an 80% increase in total participation during the 7 years analyzed. We verified that the annual participation increased, with a greater increase seen in female and middle-aged people of both genders, and runtimes of last finishers increased gradually in most of the age groups and both genders. However, while the number of people who signed up increased, there was a decrease in the number of participants who finished resulting in a negative correlation. This finding in association with the decrease in the percentage of finishers shows that each year the fitness deteriorated in both genders and across all ages.

The prevalence of Hepatitis C viral infection in Egypt is the highest rate in the world. It is a major public health problem in Egypt. The objective of this study was to detect the clearance of HCV-RNA in Egyptian patients who were recommended for combination therapy of pyglated interferon α 2a and ribavirin (PEG-interferon/Ribavirin). Ninety-five positive HCV-IgG cases were tested for HCV-RNA at baseline and at weeks 4, 12, 24, 48 and 72 of treatment with PEG-interferon α 2a/Ribavirin. The correlations between the viral parameters during and after treatment were evaluated. Patients recommended receiving PEG-interferon 2a/ribavirin combination therapy showed high response rate determined as 71.9% achieved Sustained Virological Response (SVR) from total patients, and 71.4% from patients who received 48 weeks therapy. In general, the employment of TMA provided us the accuracy of results with confidence in our work. There was a significant relation (p en results of Transcription mediated amplification (TMA) and response to therapy that indicate to positive correlation. The development of sensitive accurate assays for HCV-RNA detection and quantification is necessary to improve not only the assessment of the response to antiviral therapy but also our understanding of the mechanism underlying antiviral resistance.
