Surveillance of Chikungunya virus activity in some North-eastern states of India

Objective: To detect the prevalence pattern of Chikungunya virus in three states of Northeast India. Methods: A total of 1 510 samples were collected from different private and government hospitals of Assam, Arunachal Pradesh and Meghalaya. Serum was tested for the presence of IgM antibodies against Chikungunya virus followed by RT-PCR for amplification of Chikungunya E1 gene region using specific primers. Results: Overall, 11.83%(172/1 454) clinical samples were positive by MAC-ELISA and/or RT-PCR assay. Asymptomatic infection was seen in 17.86%. Males were more affected than females and age group 16-30 years was mostly affected. Fever(100.00%) was the primary symptom followed by headache(72.03%) and arthralgia(41.53%). Only 118 Chikungunya positive cases could be traced, of which 25.42% complained about sequelae of infection. In entomological investigation, Aedes aegypti was more predominant(92.10%) than Aedes albopictus(7.90%). No mosquito pools could be incriminated for Chikungunya virus. Conclusions: In this study, Chikungunya was observed to be prevalent in Assam, Arunachal Pradesh and Meghalaya. Though Chikungunya is a selflimiting infection, increasing morbidity by CHIkV infection is affecting social and economic status of individual. Thus, a community empowerment to effectively control mosquito population by employing different mosquito control measures along with personal protection is mandatory to tackle future outbreak of the disease.

Drying kinetics of whole and sliced turmeric rhizomes (Curcuma longa L.) in a solar conduction dryer

Drying of turmeric was carried out in a solar conduction dryer(SCD).Drying air temperature was achieved around 39–51℃for an ambient temperature in the range of 25–28℃.Moisture content from 78.65%(wb),was reduced to 6.36%(wb)and 5.50%(wb)for solid and sliced samples respectively in 12 h effective drying *** curve of sliced samples showed more uniform falling in comparison to that of whole *** average effective moisture diffusivity was found to be 1.852×10^-10m^2 s^-1 for slab samples and 1.456×10^-10m^2 s^-1 for solid *** of four models tried for simulation,Page model was found as best fitted thin layer drying model when simulation was done for all the drying *** overall thermal efficiency of the dryer was found to be 55%.Drying of sliced rhizomes showed better drying kinetics and effective drying time could be reduced by slicing instead of drying in whole form.

Melamine-Formaldehyde Acrylamide and Gum Polymer Impregnated Wood Polymer Nanocomposite

Melamine-formaldehyde acrylamide （MFA） copolymer was prepared and vacuum impregnated into wood in presence of 1,3-dimethylol 4,5-dihydroxyethylene urea （DMDHEU） as crosslinker, vinyltrichlorosilane （VTCS） modified montmorillonite （MMT） and Gum Polymer （GP） derived from Moringa oleifera as a flame retarding agent under catalyst heat treatment. The formation of MFA and DMDHEU was confirmed by Nuclear Magnetic Resonance （NMR） and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy （FTIR） studies. The crystallinity of the composites and interaction among them was studied by X-ray Diffrac- tometry （XRD） and FTIR study. Maximum interaction was found in wood samples treated with MFA/DMDHEU/GP （3 phr）/MMT as shown by FTIR. Scanning Electron Microscopy （SEM） revealed the presence of polymer and MMT in the composites. Transmission Electron Microscopy （TEM） study indicated the incorporation of MMT into the wood polymer composite. Thermal stability and flammability were checked by Thermogravimetric Analyser （TGA） and Limiting Oxygen Index （LOI） instrument. The treatment of wood with GP had a significant influence on the thermal stability and flame retardant properties of the composites. Remarkable improvement in water repellency and chemical resistance was found for the treated wood samples. The composites showed significant improvement in mechanical properties due to treatment.

An Improved Analysis of Masses and Decay Constants of Heavy Flavour Mesons within Variational Approach

We employ the variational method to study the properties such as masses, decay constants, oscillation frequency and branching ratios of leptonic decays of heavy flavour mesons with linear cum coulomb Cornell *** function, Coulomb wave function and Airy function are taken as the trial wave-function of variational method in this study. Our analysis suggests that Gaussian trial wave-function provides results which are in close proximity with the experimental results. We also make a comparison with the results from QCD Sum rules and lattice QCD, as well as with recent PDG data.

Litterfall,decomposition and nutrient release of Shorea robusta and Tectona grandis in a sub-tropical forest of West Bengal,Eastern India

We studied leaf litter fall, decomposition and nutrient release patterns of Shorea robusta and Tectona grandis by using a litter bag technique to better understand the release pattern of nutrients to soil from leaf litter. Annual litterfall varied from 13.40 ± 2.56 t ha-1 a-1 for S. robusta to 11.03 ± 3.72 t ha-1 a-1 for T. grandis and the decay constant （k） of decomposed leaf litter was distinctly higher for T. grandis （2.70 ± 0.50 a-1） compared to S. robusta （2.41 ±0.30 a-1）. Biomass loss was positively correlated with the initial litter C, WSC, C/N and ash content in S. robusta and N, P and k concentration for T. grandis. Biomass was negatively correlated with lignin and L/N ratio for S. robusta and L, WSC, L/N and C/N ratio for T. grandis （P 〈 0.01）. Nutrient use efficiency （NUE） and nutrient accumulation index （NAI） of S. robusta was higher than for T. grandis. The retranslocation of bioelements from senescent leaves ranked as P 〉 N 〉 k. Annual N, P and k input to soil through litterfall differed significantly between the two species in the following order： N〉k^P. S. robusta was superior in terms of k and P return and T. grandis was superior in terms of N return. The two tree species showed a similar patterns of nutrient release （k 〉 P 〉 N） during decomposition of their leaf *** of N, k and P were the primary limiting nutrients returned to soil through litterfall with important roles in soil fertility and forest productivity.

A Retrospective Study on the Prevalence of HIV among Patients Attending a Tertiary Care Hospital of Northeast India

Objective: The main objective of this study is to evaluate the prevalence of HIV infection among the clients attending ICTC, Gauhati Medical College & Hospital, Guwahati, for a period of seven years, i.e., from April 2008 to March 2015. Material & Method: A total of 40,983 clients attended ICTC, Gauhati Medical College & Hospital from the year 2008 to 2015. Serum samples were collected after taking informed consent and pre-test counseling. In India for all ICTCs, NACO (National AIDS Control Organization), a national guidelines has been followed for HIV testing, reporting and release of results with post test counseling. Results: Of the total 40,983 clients tested for HIV infection, 1919 (4.68%) were found to be HIV seropositive. Seropositivity was higher in male clients i.e. 1314 (68.47%) than female i.e. 604 (31.47%) followed by transgender (TG), i.e., 1 (0.0005%). Heterosexual route of transmission was the major route seen in 1666 clients (86.81%). Maximum HIV seropositivity was in the age group of 45 - 49 years (43.62%). Conclusion: HIV prevalence of 4.68 % among the clients attending ICTC, Gauhati Medical College & Hospital, Guwahati, puts the spotlight on the HIV burden in this part of the country and suggests the need for the scaling up of focused prevention efforts in high-risk groups.

Binary star detection in the open cluster king 1 field

A rarely studied open cluster,king 1 is observed using the 1.3-m telescope equipped with a 2 k×4 k CCD at Vainu Bappu Observatory,*** analyze the photometric data obtained from CCD observations in both B and V *** of 132 detected stars in the open cluster king 1 field,we have identified four stellar variables,and two among them are reported as newly detected binary *** parallax values from Gaia DR2 suggest that the open cluster king 1 is in the background of these two detected binary systems,falling along the same line of sight,giving rise to different parallax *** analysis was carried out using Phase Dispersion Minimization(PDM)and the Lomb-Scargle(LS)method for all the detected *** Of Eclipsing Binari Es(PHOEBE)is extensively employed to model various stellar parameters of both the detected binary *** on the modeling results obtained from this work,one of the binary systems is reported for the first time as an Eclipsing Detached(ED)and the other as an Eclipsing Contact(EC)binary of W-type W UMa.
