Electronic structure,bonding characteristics,and mechanical behaviors of a new family of Si-containing damage-tolerant MAB phases M_(5)SiB_(2)(M=IVB-VIB transition metals)

MAB phases are layered ternary compounds with alternative stacking of transition metal boride layers and group A element layers.Until now,most of the investigated MAB phases are concentrated on compounds with Al as the A element layers.In this work,the family of M_(5)SiB_(2)(M=IVB-VIB transition metals)compounds with silicon as interlayers were investigated by density functional theory(DFT)methods as potential MAB phases for high-temperature applications.Starting from the known Mo5SiB2,the electronic structure,bonding characteristics,and mechanical behaviors were systematically investigated and discussed.Although the composition of M_(5)SiB_(2) does not follow the general formula of experimentally reported(MB)_(2z)A_(x)(MB_(2))_(y)(z=1,2;x=1,2;y=0,1,2),their layered structure and anisotropic bonding characteristics are similar to other known MAB phases,which justifies their classification as new members of this material class.As a result of the higher bulk modulus and lower shear modulus,Mo_(5)SiB_(2) has a Pugh’s ratio of 0.53,which is much lower than the common MAB phases.It was found that the stability and mechanical properties of M_(5)SiB_(2) compounds depend on their valence electron concentrations(VECs),and an optimum VEC exists as the criteria for stability.The hypothesized Zr and Hf containing compounds,i.e.,Zr_(5)SiB_(2) and Hf_(5)SiB_(2),which are more interesting in terms of high-temperature oxidation/ablation resistance,were found to be unfortunately unstable.To cope with this problem,a new stable solid solution(Zr_(0.6)Mo_(0.4))_(5)SiB_(2) was designed based on VEC tuning to demonstrate a promising approach for developing new MAB phases with desirable compositions.

Fabrication of graphene/ceramic composites commonly requires a high-temperature sintering step with long times as well as a vacuum or inert atmosphere,which not only results in property degradation but also significant equipment complexity and manufacturing costs.In this work,the ambient flash sintering behavior of reduced graphene oxide/3 mol% yttria-stabilized ZrO_(2)(rGO/3 YSZ) composites utilizing rGO as both a composite component and a conductive additive is reported.When the sintering condition is carefully optimized,a dense and conductive composite can be achieved at room temperature and in the air within 20 s.The role of the rGO in the FS of the rGO/3 YSZ composites is elucidated,especially with the assistance of a separate investigation on the thermal runaway behavior of the rGO.The work suggests a promising fabrication route for rGO/ceramic composites where the vacuum and furnace are not needed,which is of interest in terms of simplifying the fabrication equipment for energy and cost savings.

Strategies for preventing peritoneal fibrosis in peritoneal dialysis patients： new insights based on peritoneal inflammation and angiogenesis

Peritoneal dialysis （PD） is an established form of renal replacement therapy. Long-term PD leads to morphologic and functional changes to the peritoneal membrane （PM）, which is defined as peritoneal fibrosis, a known cause of loss of peritoneal ultrafiltration capacity. Inflammation and angiogenesis are key events during the pathogenesis of peritoneal fibrosis. This review discusses the pathophysiology of peritoneal fibrosis and recent research progress on key fibrogenic molecular mechanisms in peritoneal inflammation and angiogenesis, including Toll-like receptor ligand-mediated, NOD-like receptor protein 3/interleukin-lp, vascular endothelial growth factor, and angiopoietin-2/Tie2 signaling pathways. Furthermore, novel strategies targeting peritoneal inflammation and angiogenesis to preserve the PM are discussed in depth.

CFD simulations targeting the performance of the NTNU BT1 wind turbine using overset grids

In the present study, the performance of the NTNU Blind Test 1 wind turbine is analyzed in the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations by using the CFD code FANS with structured overset grids. First, the numerical methods including the governing equations, the turbulence closure model, and the flow solver are introduced. In addition, the NTNU BT1 wind tunnel experiment is described. Then, structured overset grid blocks are generated in the computational domain with fully resolved wind turbine geometry, including the blades, hub, nacelle, and tower. Afterward, unsteady Reynolds averaged navier-Stokes (RANS) simulations with the two-layer k - ε turbulence model are performed with an inlet velocity of 10 m/s and a tip-speed ratio (TSR) of 6. The overset-grid capability of FANS is leveraged to handle the rotation of the rotor. Finally, simulations are performed for a range of TSRs and a comparison is made among the present CFD results, other numerical results obtained from representative methods, and the experimental data. It is observed that the CFD-predicted thrust coefficients match the experimental measurement at low TSRs while under-predicting the values at high TSRs, and potential reasons for this deviation are discussed.

Inhibiting 5-hydroxytryptamine receptor 3 alleviates pathological changes of a mouse model of Alzheimer's disease

Extracellular amyloid beta(Aβ) plaques are main pathological feature of Alzheimer’s disease.However,the specific type of neuro ns that produce Aβ peptides in the initial stage of Alzheimer’s disease are unknown.In this study,we found that 5-hydroxytryptamin receptor 3A subunit(HTR3A) was highly expressed in the brain tissue of transgenic amyloid precursor protein and presenilin-1 mice(an Alzheimer’s disease model) and patients with Alzheimer’s disease.To investigate whether HTR3A-positive interneurons are associated with the production of Aβ plaques,we performed double immunostaining and found that HTR3A-positive interneurons were clustered around Aβ plaques in the mouse model.Some amyloid precursor protein-positive or β-site amyloid precursor protein cleaving enzyme-1-positive neurites near Aβ plaques were co-localized with HTR3A interneurons.These results suggest that HTR3A-positive interneurons may partially contribute to the generation of Aβ peptides.We treated 5.0-5.5-month-old model mice with tro pisetron,a HTR3 antagonist,for 8 consecutive weeks.We found that the cognitive deficit of mice was partially reversed,Aβ plaques and neuroinflammation we re remarkably reduced,the expression of HTR3 was remarkably decreased and the calcineurin/nuclear factor of activated T-cell 4 signaling pathway was inhibited in treated model mice.These findings suggest that HTR3A interneurons partly contribute to generation of Aβ peptide at the initial stage of Alzheimer’s disease and inhibiting HTR3 partly reve rses the pathological changes of Alzheimer’s disease.

Removal of laparoscopic cerclage stitches via laparotomy and rivanol-induced labour: A case report and literature review

BACKGROUND Laparoscopic cervical cerclage is performed for patients with abnormal cervical anatomy and/or transvaginal cervical cerclage failure.However,the method of removing the stitches to allow labour induction remains controversial.According to published literature,stitches are removed through laparoscopic or transvaginal methods.Herein,we report,for the first time,a case of a patient who had undergone laparoscopic cerclage,and then underwent removal of stitches by laparotomy and labour induction in the third trimester of pregnancy.CASE SUMMARY A patient who underwent laparoscopic cervical cerclage due to cervical insufficiency became pregnant naturally following the operation.At 31 wk of pregnancy,severe foetal malformations were found.To successfully induce labour,cerclage stitches were removed via laparotomy,and rivanol was injected directly into the uterus.Following successful induction of labour,the patient delivered a dead foetus.CONCLUSION This report provides a reliable scheme of removing cerclage stitches for patients who have undergone laparoscopic cerclage but experience severe foetal malformations.

Application Potential of Mg–Zn–Nd Alloy as a Gastrointestinal Anastomosis nail Material

Gastrointestinal tumors are common malignant tumors in the digestive tract, of which gastric cancer is the third leading cause of cancer death and colorectal cancer is the fourth most deadly cancer. Nowadays, surgical resection remains to be one of the main measures for treating digestive tract tumors, and gastrointestinal anastomosis remains to be a key step in gastrointestinal surgery. Mg and its alloys have great potentials to be used for gastrointestinal anastomosis as anastomotic nail materials due to their biodegradability, good mechanical properties and biocompatibility. In this study, Mg–2Zn–0.5Nd(ZN20) alloy fine wires showed great potential as surgical staples. When we performed in vitro corrosion experiments, drainage fluid was collected from different parts of the patient’s abdominal cavity after surgery for the first time to replace the traditional simulation fluid and to more realistically simulate the microenvironment required by the anastomotic nail. ZN20 alloy has an ultimate tensile strength of 256 MPa, an elongation rate of 12.56%, a tensile force in anastomosis of 16.8 N, and a rupture pressure after anastomosis at 17 kPa, which means that a sufficient mechanical support was provided after anastomosis.The statistical analysis and histopathological analysis of biochemical tests indicate that ZN20 alloy has no adverse effect on the normal metabolism of liver, kidney and body, but has superior biocompatibility and biosafety. This work confirms that ZN20 possesses a great application potential in the clinical field as a new type of gastrointestinal anastomotic nail material.

South drying and north wetting over the Tibetan Plateau modulated by a zonal temperature dipole across timescales

Precipitation over the Tibetan Plateau and surrounding highlands is a crucial process in the hydrological cycle and is very important for local and downstream ecology,and previous research mainly focused on a certain range of timescales.A better understanding of the variability across various timescales,which has been largely ignored,can provide new insight on the regional weather and climate.Here,a north‒south dipole pattern of precipitation shaped by a zonal dipole of the upper-tropospheric temperature is revealed in this region.Both dipole patterns of the precipitation and the accompanied temperature exist from daily to interdecadal scales.The three-dimensional circulation anomalies connecting the temperature and precipitation dipoles are consistent across various timescales.The frequencies of daily events with opposite phases of the temperature dipole modulate the interannual and interdecadal variability in precipitation.The south drying and north wetting pattern over the Tibetan Plateau is an interdecadal manifestation of the precipitation dipole and can be ascribed to the temperature trend favourable for the positive phase of the zonal temperature dipole.The consistent dipole pattern constructs a more complete portrayal of precipitation over the Tibetan Plateau from synoptic scale to climatology.
