Since first establishing thermal measurement techniques for micrometer-scale wires,various methods have been devised and improved ***,the uncertainty of different measurements on the same sample has not yet been *** this work,a round robin test was performed to compare the thermal conductivity and thermal diffusivity measurement methods for a fine metal *** tested material was a pure gold wire,with a diameter of 30μ*** wire was cut into certain lengths and distributed to four institutions using five different measurement methods:the direct current(DC)self-heating method,the DC heating T-type method,the 3ωmethod for thermal conductivity,the scanning laser heating alternating current(AC)method,and the spot periodic heating radiation thermometry method for thermal *** completing the measurements,the reported thermal conductivity and thermal diffusivity at room temperature,i.e.,317 W·m^(-1)·K^(-1)and 128×10^(-6)m^(2)·s^(-1),respectively,were adopted as references for comparison with the measurement *** advantages and disadvantages of each method are described in terms of the effect of electrical and thermal junctions fabricated on a wire,such as an electrode,a thermocouple,and a heat *** knowledge obtained from the tested methods will be useful for selecting and designing a measurement technique for various wire-like materials.

The recent development of the information society leads to many multimedia data on the Web. Especially in Japan, there are a lot of comic images on the Web. However, such a phenomenon causes copyright problems. In order to develop useful information society, the need for comic managing system identifying the author of comic images and ignoring the copied images is increasing. Such a system is indispensable for our future information society. In this paper, we propose a system for identifying the image of comics, and evaluate its performance against conventional methods. Furthermore, we examine the performance with subjective evaluation result by specialists of cartoonist.

A Feasibility Study of an Individualized Voiding Program in Japan to Improve the Sense of Control in Older People with Functional Urinary Incontinence

Purpose: This study intended to assess the feasibility of an individualized voiding program in Japan aimed at improving the sense of micturition control in older people with functional urinary incontinence. Method: Following the interview guide, FGIs were conducted in two groups (4 - 6 participants) consisting of nurses and care workers with more than 5 years of experience as practitioners of urination care. Data were analyzed using a qualitative descriptive approach. Results: We determined that the program purpose is to “enable caregivers to work as a well-coordinated team to humanely facilitate excretion independence in older people, which is essential for living with dignity”, as this confirmed the importance of maintaining the sense of micturition control in older people for their well-being. In the program outline, we extracted the following five categories: 1) setting selection criteria for recipients considering the status of micturition induction, 2) careful collection of information and assessment of lower urinary tract symptoms in older people in case of environmental changes, 3) examination of methods used for assessing lower urinary tract symptoms according to the facility environment, 4) confirmation of the recipient’s micturition habits and request for assistance, and 5) conducting necessary examination for setting the intervention period and evaluation period according to the target condition. The feedback on the program guide was summarized in the statement—specific successful cases help frame and implement the micturition induction plan. Conclusion: We confirmed the feasibility of the micturition induction plan for improving the sense of control in older people with functional urinary incontinence. Supraceliac Aortic Clamping for Repair of Ruptured Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm in Patients with Short Aortic Neck Length

Objective: Prompt bleeding control with proximal aortic clamping and subsequent aortic repair are very important for ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysm. However, unsuitable anatomy, such as short aortic neck length, not only disturbs the means to an expeditious repair, but may also increase morbidity and mortality. In the present study, we aimed to evaluate the efficacy of supraceliac aortic clamping for improving surgical outcomes for patients with ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysm, who have a short aortic neck length. Method: Between April 2010 and September 2015, eighteen patients underwent emergent open surgical repair of ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysm. Eight patients with a short aortic neck length underwent supraceliac aortic clamping, and 10 underwent infrarenal aortic clamping. Results: The mean supraceliac aortic clamping time was 30 ± 7 minutes. There was 1 operative death in the infrarenal aortic clamping group due to respiratory failure, and the overall operative mortality was 6%. There were no significant differences between the 2 groups with respect to postoperative complication rates or mortality. Furthermore, there were no significant differences in variables of renal function between the 2 groups, through-out the study period. Conclusion: Supraceliac aortic clamping was associated with minimal mortality and morbidity, but not with harmful effects on postoperative renal function. Thus, supraceliac aortic clamping can be safely applied for ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysm with short aortic neck length.

A 46-year-old man was referred to our hospital due to severe ischemic mitral regurgitation with severe bileaflet tethering and a dilated left ventricle. We performed left ventricular reconstruction and mitral valve annuloplasty combined with papillary muscle relocation. Although left ventricular continued remodeling occurred during follow-up, left ventricular reconstruction and mitral valve annuloplasty combined with papillary muscle relocation provided durable mitral repair, and his functional status was good. Thus, this combined surgical treatment may reduce mitral regurgitation recurrence after mitral valve annuloplasty.

Natural Postoperative Bone Metabolic Changes after Total Knee Arthroplasty Determined by Positron Emission Tomography Scans

Artificial joint replacement surgery is the orthopedic procedure of choice to relieve pain, correct joint deformities, and help patients resume everyday activities. However, the detailed mechanisms regulating peri-implant bone remodeling at the bone-prosthesis interface remain elusive. To address this gap in knowledge, we evaluated the natural postoperative course of bone metabolism by using [18F] NaF positron emission tomography (PET)/computed tomography in 57 patients (104 joints) who underwent asymptomatic total knee arthroplasty (TKA). First, we measured total tracer uptake around TKA to determine the total bone metabolism (TBM) and used the ischial tuberosity as the reference tissue for normalization of PET images. Second, we calculated the TBM ratio (TBMR) by dividing the TBM by tracer uptake in the reference tissue. A moderate increase in TBMR was observed 4 - 5 days after implantation, and its intensity reached the maximum on the seventh postoperative day. The TBMR showed no differences until 12 weeks, after which it decreased slowly and returned to the basal levels. The new parameter TBMR and the unique pattern of postoperative metabolic changes in the bone around the prosthesis may help set accurate interpretation criteria to diagnose complications such as loosening or infections.

Inhibitory effect of angiotensinⅡreceptor antagonist on hepatic stellate cell activation in non-alcoholic steatohepatitis

AIM: To investigate the efficacy of angiotensinⅡreceptor antagonist on hepatic stellate cells (HSCs) activation in the patients with non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH). METHODS: Seven patients with NASH were prescribed losartan, a selective angiotensinⅡtype 1 receptor antagonist (50 mg/d) for 48 wk. Liver biopsies were performed both at the entry and end of the study in all patients. Quiescent and activated HSCs were identified by double immunostaining using anti-p75 andα-smooth muscle actin antibodies, and the number of each phenotype was counted. Similarly, the liver specimens obtained from the eight patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver (NAFL) were also examined as controls. RESULTS: In NASH hepatic tissues, activated HSCs were dominantly distributed as compared with those in NAFL. The 48-wk losartan treatment induced a remarkable decrease in activated HSCs and a mild increase in quiescent phenotypes. CONCLUSION: Our data suggest the crucial involvement of HSCs in anti-fibrotic effect of angiotensinⅡreceptor antagonist on patients with NASH.
