Occurrence of perfluoroalkyl acids in precipitation from Shenyang,China

Perfluorosulfonates (PfSAs) and perfluorocarboxylates (PfCAs) in precipitation collected from Shenyang, China were determined. Snow samples were collected in the snow event on March 4, 2007 from 34 sites involving both the urban and suburban areas in Shenyang. The snowmelt was preconcentrated by solid phase extraction and analyzed using LC-MS method. Measurable amounts of perfluoroalkyl acids (PfAS) were found in precipitation samples from Shenyang, demonstrating that wet deposition is one possible pathway for the removing of the selected PfAS chemicals from atmosphere. Major PfAS detected were PfOS (fOA (0.82―13 ng/L) and PfHpA (0.76―11 ng/L), with their mean concentration of 5.4, 3.3 and 2.9 ng/L, respectively. Other PfSAs and PfCAs were detected at much lower frequency or below the limit of detection in all the samples. The work presented here offers some basis for the investigation on the environmental behavior and the evaluation of human exposure to PfAS.

The Effect of the Hot Water Extracts of the <i>Paecilomyces hepiali </i>and <i>Cordyceps militaris</i>Mycelia on the Growth of Gastrointestinal Bacteria

The gastrointestinal health is very important aspect concerning human health. It refers to nutrient and vitamin absorption, food digestion and various infectious diseases. The Paecilomyces hepiali and Cordyceps militaris are highly enriched with cordycepin and ergosterol which are considered as anti bacterial substances. Present study finds out comparative effect of hot water extract of particular fungal material on growth of six species of gastrointestinal bacteria that belong to both aerobic and anaerobic and, consist with harmful and commensal categories. The appropriate concentration level of hot water extract of both strains was identified. The individual specific bacterial growing media were prepared and calculated;amounts of bacteria cultures were inoculated by using micro pipettes. The optical density and number of bacterial colonies were measured after 24 hours. The pure mycelial extract of P. hepiali with 2 × 10-3 g/ml of concentration has significant effect on depleting the growth of E. coli, E. faecalis, S. aureus, L. gasseri and B. ovatus bacteria. B. longum has no significant effect by particular extract. Same type of extract of C. militaris has significantly reduced the growth of every bacteria used in this study. Hot water extract of C. militaris cultivated on soy bean has significant growth retardation toward E. coli, E. faecalis, S. aureus and L. gasseri. It has stimulated the growth of B. ovatus and B. longum which are considered as beneficial bacteria for human gut. This study shows that extracts of both mycelia include antimicrobial substances like cordycepin and ergosterol which can be used as food supplements to enhance human gut health.

Effects of Lifestyle Intervention Performed by Community Pharmacists on Glycemic Control in Patients with Type 2 Diabetes: The Community Pharmacists Assist (Compass) Project, a Pragmatic Cluster Randomized Trial

Background: Community pharmacists should be involved in diabetes care, while there has been less evidence about whether a brief lifestyle intervention is effective for diabetes care in community pharmacies. Objectives: To examine the effects of brief lifestyle intervention on glycemic control in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2D) by using a coaching style, provided by community pharmacists. Methods: A prospective, cluster-randomized, controlled trial was conducted in 50 groups of community pharmacies in Japan. In all, 132 patients with T2D (age, 20 - 75 years, ≥8.0% of hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c)) were assigned to the intervention group (n = 90) or the usual care group (n = 42). The intervention group (IG) underwent brief lifestyle coaching for self-care of T2D for 6 months. The standard care group (CG) received usual care by pharmacists and was given a general newsletter. The primary outcome was changes in HbA1c levels. Results: After 6 months, the IG had significantly improved HbA1c (IG: -0.6 ± 0.9 vs. CG: -0.2% ± 0.9%;p = 0.021 using the last observation carried forward analysis). Although the number of drugs reduced from 2.3 ± 0.8 to 2.0 ± 1.2 in the IG, the number increased from 2.3 ± 1.1 to 2.5 ± 1.1 in the CG (-0.2 ± 0.9 in IG vs. 0.2 ± 0.6 in CG;p = 0.023). Conclusions: The brief lifestyle intervention by community pharmacists improved glycemic control in patients with T2D. Community pharmacists may more positively participate as lifestyle coaches for diabetes care.

Morphology of Acetabulum and femoral Head-Neck Junction in Hip Dysplasia Which Underwent Rotational Acetabular Osteotomy

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the preoperative radiographs with cases of developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) leading to rotational acetabular osteotomy (RAO) or curved peri-ace-tabular osteotomy (CPO), and examine the frequency of femoroacetabular impingement (fAI) related bone morphology in the acetabulum and femoral head-neck junction. Twenty-four hips with hip dyaplasia who underwent CPO or RAO were included in this study. Six hips had grade 0 and eighteen hips had grade 1 OA according to the Tönnis classification. We excluded patients with moderate and severe hip osteoarthritis and major femoral head deformities. Preoperative radiograph was evaluated on sharp angle, center-edge angle, alpha angle, crossover sign and posterior wall sign. Crossover signs were revealed in 7 hips (29.2%);posterior wall signs were revealed in 16 hips (66.7%);and cam-type deformities with an alpha angle of ≥50.5°were observed in 19 hips (79.2%) in preoperative evaluation. As determined using the Tönnis scale, no progression of osteoarthritis was found in 16 of the 24 hips;there was a one-grade progression in 8 hips. Among the 8 hips, either positive cross-over sign or posterior sign in acetabulum, and an alpha angle of ≥50.5°in femur were observed in six hips with progression of osteoarthritis. The presence of cam-type deformity and acetabular retroversion in patients who underwent RAO or CPO was relatively high in preoperative radiographs, and caution should be employed during surgery in patients with DDH. There is a possibility of secondary fAI due to excessive forward coverage of the bone fragments after RAO and CPO.
