Peripheral nerve injuries induce a severe motor and sensory deficit. Since the availability of autologous nerve transplants for nerve repair is very limited, alternative treatment strategies are sought, in.l.ding the use of tubular nerve guidance conduits(tnGCs). However, the use of tnGCs results in poor function.l.recovery and central necrosis of the regenerating tissue, which limits their application to short nerve lesion defects(typically shorter than 3 cm). Given the importance of vascularization in nerve regeneration, we hypothesized that enabling the growth of blood vessels from the surrounding tissue into the regenerating nerve within the tnGC would help eliminate necrotic processes and lead to improved regeneration. In this study, we reported the application of macroscopic holes into the tubular walls of silk-based tnGCs and compared the various features of these improved silk^(+) tnGCs with the tubes without holes(silk^(–) tnGCs) and autologous nerve transplants in an 8-mm sciatic nerve defect in rats. Using a combination of micro-computed tomography and histological an.l.ses, we were able to prove that the use of silk^(+) tnGCs induced the growth of blood vessels from the adjacent tissue to the intralumin.l.neovascular formation. A significan.l. higher number of blood vessels in the silk^(+) group was found compared with autologous nerve transplants and silk^(–), accompanied by improved axon regeneration at the distal coaptation point compared with the silk^(–) tnGCs at 7 weeks postoperatively. In the 15-mm(critical size) sciatic nerve defect model, we again observed a distinct ingrowth of blood vessels through the tubular walls of silk^(+) tnGCs, but without improved function.l.recovery at 12 weeks postoperatively. Our data proves that macroporous tnGCs increase the vascular supply of regenerating nerves and facilitate improved axon.l.regeneration in a short-defect model but not in a critical-size defect model. Although many causes of Alzheimer’s disease(AD)may exist,both the origin.l.amyloid cascade and tau hypotheses posit that abnormal misfolding and accumulation of amyloid-β(Aβ)and tau protein is the central event causing the ***,that con.l.sion could be only partly true,and there is con.l.cting evidence about the role of both proteins in AD,being able to precede and in.l.ence one *** researchers argue that these proteins are mere executors rather than primary causes of ***,there have been continuing refinements of both hypotheses,with alternative explanations proposed.Aβand tau proteins may be independen.l. involved in specific neurotoxic pathways;yet there may be other crucial processes going on in early ***,accumulating evidence suggests that Aβand tau act synergistically,rather than additively in disease onset(Jeremic et al.,2021,2023a).

A second-order moment model of particles in dense gas-solid flow is proposed based on the kinetic theory of gran.l.r *** solid phase constitutive model is closed with the approximated third-order moment en.l.sure equation of particle velocity from the elementary transport *** boundary conditions of particles are proposed in considering the energy transfer and dissipations by collisions between the wall and *** behavior of particles is numerically simulated in a bubble fluidized bed,which indicates the distinct anisotropy behavior of the turbulent *** particle velocities are in agreement with the measurements by Muller et al(2008) and Yuu et al(2001).Predicted second-order moment of velocity has the same trend as that of *** calculated Reyn.l.s stresses per unit bulk density agree with the measured data by Muller et al(2008) and with the fluctuating velocity of particles measured by Yuu et al(2001).

Specialized pro-resolving lipid mediators in.l.ding maresin 1 mediate resolution but the levels of these are reduced in Alzheimer's disease brain, suggesting that they constitute a novel target for the treatment of Alzheimer's disease to prevent/stop in.l.mmation and combat disease pathology. Therefore, it is important to clarify whether they counteract the expression of genes and proteins induced by amyloid-β. With this objective, we an.l.zed the relevance of human monocyte–derived microglia for in vitro modeling of neuroin.l.mmation and its resolution in the context of Alzheimer's disease and investigated the pro-resolving bioactivity of maresin 1 on amyloid-β42–induced Alzheimer's disease–like in.l.mmation. An.l.sis of RnA-sequencing data and secreted proteins in supernatants from the monocyte-derived microglia showed that the monocyte-derived microglia resembled Alzheimer's disease–like neuroin.l.mmation in human brain microglia after incubation with amyloid-β42. Maresin 1 restored homeostasis by down-regulating in.l.mmatory pathway related gene expression induced by amyloid-β42 in monocyte-derived microglia, protection of maresin 1 against the effects of amyloid-β42 is mediated by a re-balancing of in.l.mmatory transcription.l.networks in which modulation of gene transcription in the nuclear factor-kappa B pathway plays a major part. We pinpointed molecular targets that are associated with both neuroin.l.mmation in Alzheimer's disease and therapeutic targets by maresin 1. In con.l.sion, monocyte-derived microglia represent a relevant in vitro microglial model for studies on Alzheimer's disease-like in.l.mmation and drug response for individual patients. Maresin 1 ameliorates amyloid-β42–induced changes in several genes of importance in Alzheimer's disease, highlighting its potential as a therapeutic target for Alzheimer's disease.

Probing local lattice Fluctautions in Cuprates and Manganites by High k-Resolution EXAFS

X ray absorption fine structure has been exploited as a tool to study local lattice distortions in the perovskite cuperates and manganites, showing novel phenomena as high temperature superconductivity and colossal magneto resistance. Temperature dependent Cu K \%edge\% and Mn K \%edge\% EXAFS have been used to investigate the local lattice distortions associated with the doped charge at metallic densities in these materials. Temperature dependent correlated Debye Waller factors of the Cu O in the cuprates shows an upturn at the stripe formation temperature T \%so\% . Capabilities of the EXAFS technique have been further demonstrated for the case of the manganites, revealing key information on their metal insulator transition. The EXAFS has been shown to be capable of providing quantitative local distortions that are closely associated with the characteristic properties of these complex materials.

The study was conducted to identify indoor air quality and the level of thermal comfort in various selected locations in Faculty of Engineering and Built Environment （FKAB）, University Kebangsaan Malaysia （UKM） with built-up area of 250,936 fie. The indoor air quality and thermal comfort were measured at various selected locations by using indoor air quality equipment （Thermal Comfort SERI）. The thermal comfort assessments are based on Malaysian Code of Practice Indoor Air Quality 2005 and Moderate Thermal Environments-Determination of the PMV and PPD indices specification of the condition for thermal comfort （ISO7730：1994） From the data an.l.sis, the FKAB building is considered inadequately vented space. The concentration of CO2 for all sampling area evaluated exceeds the recommended concentration （〉 1000 ppm）. The ventilation system used in FKAB building is designed by delivering fix amount of fresh air into building from extern.l.building without consideration on the number of occupants. This common ventilation design will increase the amount of CO2 dramatically all day long and these reflect the inefficiency of energy used. The faculty needs to be equipped with a comprehensive energy management system that can allow detailed documentation of continuous performance of all energy system and consumption in the building.

The GaP-based dilute nitride direct band gap material Ga（nAsP） is gaining importance due to the mon.l.thic integra- tion of laser diodes on Si microprocessors. The major advantage of this newly proposed laser material system is the small lattice mismatch between GaP and Si. However, the large threshold current density of these promising laser diodes on Si substrates shows that the carrier leakage plays an important role in Ga（nAsP）/GaP QW lasers. Therefore, it is necessary to investigate the band alignment in this laser material system. In this paper, we present a theoretical investigation to optimize the band alignment of type-I direct band gap GanxAsyP1-x-y/GaP QWs on GaP substrates. We examine the effect of nitrogen （n） concentration on the band offset ratios and band offset energies. We also provide a comparison of the band alignment of type-I direct band gap GanxAsyP1-x-y/GaP QWs with that of the GanxAsyP1-x-y/Al2Ga1-2P QWs on GaP substrates. Our theoretical calculations indicate that the incorporations of n into the well and AI into the barrier improve the band alignment compared to that of the GaAsP/GaP QW laser heterostructures.
